I can't believe how nervous I feel to hear the verdict. I'll be very upset if it doesn't go the way I hope. I literally would not be coping if I were Erin, or related to one of her lunch guests. I would need a sedative or 12.

There's currently a queue outside Courtroom 4, ahead of the highly anticipated hearing, which we're told will get underway about 2:15pm.

That's about 13 minutes from now.

Once the court has reconvened, the jury will be led back into the court room.

Justice Christopher Beale’s associate will address the jury foreperson. That’s the person chosen by jury members as their spokesperson when they were empanelled.

The associate will ask the foreperson whether the jury has reached a verdict on each separate count, and what that verdict is.

It’ll be framed something like this:

  • Have you agreed upon your verdict? The foreperson will answer, “Yes”.
  • How say you on Charge 1 of the murder of Heather Wilkinson? Do you find Erin Patterson guilty or not guilty? The foreperson will then answer either “guilty” or “not guilty”.
This will play out for all four charges.

Once the foreperson has announced all the verdicts, the associate will address the jury as a whole to ask whether these are the true verdicts agreed upon by all members

Justice Beal will then thank the jury for its service and members will be led out of court.

“Rogers reminds the jury of CCTV they have seen from Patterson stopping at a service station during this trip and entering the bathroom for 9 seconds.

Patterson testified that she entered the bathroom to dispose of the tissues she used to clean herself up.

“If she really did have diarrhoea in the bush ... it would take more than nine seconds of cleaning herself up or at a minimum to wash her hands,” Rogers says.

She says the jury should reject Patterson’s evidence that she entered the bathroom because she had diarrhoea on the side of the road.”

wait, I thought she put the tissues in her purse

Just another 15minutes for our over seas members. It's 2pm her now
Verdict reached announcement was 15 mins ago, so all the reporting that there would be 15 mins notices was wrong and it was really 30 mins notice.

Unless it was 15mins notice to get to the court and another 15 mins for seating.

OMG they have a verdict!!

Wonderful.
Now hope the majority here are pleased, BUT I guess we will 'carry on' as before, trying to iron out problems.

Good luck, Simon, you need it, after what you have been through for MANY years, including after this deadly meal and during the trial.

Listening to the many lies by EP must have been horrid for you.

What happens to Erin Patterson after the verdict?

If Ms Patterson is found guilty, she will be remanded in custody to a later date, when both the prosecution and defence legal teams will make submissions to Justice Beale about what they think the sentence should be.

This is called a plea hearing.

The sentencing itself would then be adjourned to a later date, or a date that is yet to be set.

If Ms Patterson is found not guilty, she’ll be led out of courtroom for processing and release.

Journalists who were lunching in nearby cafes dropped everything to immediately head into the Latrobe Valley Law Courts.
I wonder if they queued up to pay for their lunch, left a wad of cash on the table, or maybe did a runner, shouting that they would pay later on the way out?
