What happens to Erin Patterson after the verdict?
M
By Melissa Brown

If Ms Patterson is found guilty, she will be remanded in custody to a later date, when both the prosecution and defence legal teams will make submissions to Justice Beale about what they think the sentence should be.

This is called a plea hearing.

The sentencing itself would then be adjourned to a later date, or a date that is yet to be set.

If Ms Patterson is found not guilty, she’ll be led out of courtroom for processing and release.

Breaking:

The jury in the matter of R v Erin Patterson have indicated they have reached verdicts and the court will be reconvening at 2.15pm.
Media and court watchers have rushed to courtroom four to hear the verdict in the case.
The news that the jury had reached a verdict came during Monday's lunch break, sending media crews scrabbling back to the law courts.
Cameramen and other media staff have now swarmed the front of Morwell Court to capture the reaction of parties involved in the case including the prosecution, defence and members of the Victoria Police homicide squad in the moments after the verdict is delivered.
The jury will hand their verdict exactly a week after Justice Christopher Beale first retired jurors to deliberate.
The seven male and five female jurors took about 27 hours in total to reach their verdicts.

Turned on the TV and it was Nine talking about a verdict.

Reporters filling dead air is really something. A lot of talking, not much actually being said.

I was just logging off to go to bed...but now I'll have to stay up late I guess!

I wonder if they queued up to pay for their lunch, left a wad of cash on the table, or maybe did a runner, shouting that they would pay later on the way out?
Strangely, this was my first thought too! I guess in a line of work such as this, cash is king! Toss enough on the table, and run at fast pace to jostle for position. If you really have forethought, ask for your food to go when ordering so you can take it with you.

Verdict reached announcement was 15 mins ago, so all the reporting that there would be 15 mins notices was wrong and it was really 30 mins notice.

Unless it was 15mins notice to get to the court and another 15 mins for seating.
They announced it during the scheduled lunch break, I assume that's why it is different.

Under the Juries Act, a juror cannot disclose any of the discussions, opinions or voting that happened in the jury room.

If they do, they risk being fined or even jailed for up to five years.

Being in court and hearing evidence can be distressing.

Jurors are offered a free, confidential counselling service called the Juror Support Program.

Jury members are generally exempt from being called for jury service again for three years, but on the final day of his instructions, Justice Beale offered all jurors a “dispensation” from jury duty for 15 years.

@TootsieFootsie

Thanks so much for this info about dispensation from jury duty.

This jury must be exhausted from their loooong deliberations.
