I think they were all referring to when Lyn was there, not when she "left".
Just listened to Chris in the episode 'Loyalty", his words were when asked by the detective if Lyn was close to the children- " she was pretty close to them most of the time, then when she returned to work I guess she was a little frustrated she wasn't with the children as often as she liked. I basically became father and mother to Sherrin our second daughter, but she was basically a good mother, yes."
Then Paul and Marilyn said similar, that Chris was basically mother and father. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. I just found it odd, like he was sewing a seed to the detective, which no doubt he was doing throughout the whole interview.

Officers have begun packing up the excavation site where detectives have been searching for the remains of missing Sydney mother Lynette Dawson.
Detectives began removing they machinery and tools they had used to comb through the soil at around lunch time today. A tow truck appeared shortly after to remove the five orange skip bins on the property.
A police spokeswoman said detectives had yet to find anything at the site and it was yet to be decided if the dig would continue. The Australian 1 hr ago
Assuming they don't find anything, I trust police will stick to their edict that they have enough to proceed anyway (without a body).

'Joanne Curtis, the onetime schoolgirl lover of murder suspect Chris Dawson, has attended a Sydney police station one day after cops finished a major search for his missing wife Lyn's body.'
'Ms Curtis, 54, arrived at Dee Why police station on Sydney's northern beaches clutching a folder of documents at lunchtime on Tuesday and left more than an hour later.'
not over yet, peoples....
breaking news is, they haven't found anything of any consequence......what happens next, I don't know.
Those three, Chris, Paul, and Marilyn know that Lynn's body isn't where the police were searching, and , it seems , are in no hurry to say where it is. One day, though... one day.
I just don't get it. What about the buried bloodied cardigan? Where's Lyn?

you have got me keen for a rerun on it too .You made me listen to the episode called the System again.
This is what I am summarising from the first 15 - 20 minutes.
Bob Gibbs was talking about the cardigan. Was in 4 panels and had hardly deteriorated at all but the twining holding the panels together had caused the cardigan to be in panels. It was wool or cashmere.
The multiple cut marks were consistent with stabbing. It stated it was consistent with knife marks in a domestic stabbing. Julie Andrews a neighbour said that she had seen Lyn in the cardigan and it probably wasn't mentioned in the Coroner's inquest.
Theory about Lyn being buried with the cardigan on and it being taken off and the body was dug up and the cardigan being cut off with garden sheers. Bob Gibbs felt it had just fallen apart from the seams.
Hedley asked if the cardigan would be stained. The reply was blood could have dissolved with rain and in the soil.
The expert said if the cardigan was removed after they would expect more DNA. Not removed while decomposing. High DNA contact.
As with most of the episodes it is worth listening to again.
you have got me keen for a rerun on it too .
the cardy is such a big part of the mystery .
stab marks in a cardigan belonging to the woman who lived there who has gone missing ...deliberately buried in the garden. ….
