There used to be a lot of Jewish people living in Bondi, when I lived there 50 years ago, we all lived in peace. What a sad day.

Yeah, my grandmother lived there as a small child in the 1920s. She wasn't Jewish, but I imagine most of the kids she went to school with were.

Well, with ten dead, it's officially the highest death toll since Port Arthur.

Bystander tackles gunman in incredible footage

Absolutely incredible, so brave! I'm guessing he's ex police or defence force?

He would have saved a lot of lives, wonderful to see the human spirit at times of such tragedy.

I think that gun they showed on ABC news for sure belonged to the shooter. The palm tree and path the civilian placed it at when the shooter ran off looks exactly the same.

I know heroics get people killed the vast majority of the time, but I don't think there's any question that civilian saved lives. And all he did was disarm the guy. He didn't kill him, though he could have. That takes courage, too.

I'm so glad he didn't kill him. It's not his call and the shooter could have alerted his 'colleagues' then too by screaming (not sure how far apart they were) and could have endangered the hero.

Not necessarily.

We see this kind of thing from all kinds of people in extreme situations.

It was courageous, very foolish, and wonderful. He was fortunate not to be killed, and helped saved the lives of others, which I'm sure he thought was worth the risk.

It was very gutsy of him, he didn't look young or very fit so my guess is that he has an armed forces background but we shall see.

A witness told Daily Mail: 'These men pulled over their car put a black flag with an emblem on the windshield then walked over the footbridge and started firing.'

A shooter of Middle Eastern appearance, with a black flag, opens fire on a Jewish celebration. Doesn't really take a genius to work this one out.

I think we will hear about alot of heroic actions.

Good should always trump evil

Waiting to hear they were on bail etc or on a watch list................

This is a rude awakening. I didn’t believe that radicalisation could happen in Australia, especially given its strict immigration laws, yet it clearly does, unnoticed by police, involving individuals driven by extreme religious or political ideologies willing to sacrifice their lives for it.
I also wonder about the access to the rifles, gun laws are very strict here.

Police working to disarm explosive device

By Andrew Thorpe

Police are reiterating that the public still needs to avoid Bondi Beach despite the two shooters having been neutralised.

There is an ongoing bomb threat in the area, police say, and they are working to disarm what they've described as an IED, or improvised explosive device.

I've seen some truly horrific videos from the beach on Sm. I don't think I will ever be able to rationalise how anyone would think doing something like this is a good idea

Luckily most people cannot rationalise how anyone could be this driven by their own ideology to kill others and put their own life on the line. Absolutely inhumane.

"A senior law enforcement official has confirmed that one of the gunmen was Narveed Akram from Bonnyrigg in Sydney's south-west.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Akram's home in Bonnyrigg is currently being raided by police."

There's a photograph of someone hosing blood off surf lifesaving boards on ABC. I assume they used them as backboards for the wounded. I don't wish them the trauma, but I'm glad that the lifesavers were around to help. They have medical training and they would have been able to assist in the immediate moments after the shooting, but also contact police directly from the tower when it began.

A Bondi surf lifesaver gave medical aid to victims at the Bondi Westfield stabbing attack the other year. They're first responders just as much as firefighters or ambulance drivers.

I just saw a longer version & as as he was de-arming the perp the other perp was to the right up on a small bridge STILL shooting & the perp who had his gun taken from him went to the the other one on the bridge, who looked to gesture him to come to him & they both continued shooting, so had more weapons.

What a hero

I've just seen that video. Incredibly brave.

Should have shot him, though!
