CA - Murder victims Identified as Rob Reiner and wife Michele - LA Dec 14 2025

Insightful article, quite lengthy, somewhat foreboding..

Quote following the release of ‘Being Charlie’.
‘He turned back to the table. “It was very hard. The number one job of any parent is to keep their child safe. And I hadn’t done that.” He was almost tearing up. “And now here I have done that. I kept him safe. He came out alive.”

Here in 2025, the words kept ricocheting through my brain. Yes, Nick had come out alive. It was Rob that hadn’t.’

I picture the son attacking his father, and his mother physically trying to stop him, and in the process of unsuccessfully trying to save her husband, she too is stabbed and also lost her life. Speculation only!

Yes when a violent attack is occurring calling 911 is usually not a high priority, it’s trying to fight off the attacker to protect the life of their spouse. A burly 32 year old would’ve been far stronger than either of his senior parents.

The fight at the holiday party was in a restaurant.

Nick began screaming at his father in front of other diners at the posh Giorgio Baldi restaurant in Santa Monica Canyon, a worker there confirmed to The Post.

no, they are describing a previous fight

this line is just before the one you quoted - 'The showdown occurred a few months after another big public argument between the dad and Nick.'

I doubt they had the opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if he was under the influence of meth or something at the time either.

Perhaps however Nick obviously didn’t cool off, something set him off. Homicide using a knife is generally associated with rage killing.
I read that Rob and Michelle left the party shortly after the argument , did they leave Nick there? He would be like a fish out of water in that crowd, maybe that fuelled his rage. Feeling like a nobody.

Now he's somebody. He has made national news.

Until he is convicted and goes to prison for life. Then he really will be a nobody.

Okay, so that indicates that he killed them by 4am Sunday.

Does California have Insanity defense? Probably. But seriously, if that crazy movie theater shooter in Colorado didn't get the "Insanity" stamp, geez, the bar must be pretty high.

Would he be eligible for any inheritance cash for his defense? From people he killed? Or just a public defender?

It does, but the question comes down to if he knew what he was doing, and if he knew what he was doing was wrong.

Fleeing the scene, checking into a hotel, etc.

Good luck.

California has a slayer rule, so he can’t profit.

I wonder if he didn’t confess that he’s guilty already? How else could LAPD so confidently state he’s ‘responsible’ for the deaths of his parents.

“Nick Reiner is “responsible” for the deaths of his parents, legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner, Los Angeles police said.”

The thing is, he still may have the best defense the family can afford. If it's what the Reiners would have wanted, the surviving family members may honour that, however they personally feel about the defendant, his history, and his alleged crimes.

I doubt he'll appreciate it.

and let’s hope AI wrote that slop bc it was all over the place! I think the incident at a restaurant in Malibu was a separate incident from the Conan O’Brien soirée. But like I said that article was difficult to parse. 😅
AI has been making a lot of mistakes on various sites, which is kind of disturbing. I read an article about RFK Jr that said his middle name was Fitzgerald, when in reality it's Francis. They also got the dates of some of his siblings wrong. As you said, it's often all over the place.

In addition for the tremendous sympathy I feel for the Reiners’ other children, I also feel badly for the Reiners’ friends and colleagues who must be grieving deeply—in particular, I worry about the emotional toll this will take on the wonderful but quite elderly Mel Brooks, longtime BFF of Carl Reiner and, I presume, a close friend of Rob and Michele R. as well. I don’t know if my heart could handle the loss of another true mensch and giant of American culture on the heels of this abysmal week of world events.

Oh, I absolutely agree.

I thought of Mel Brooks right away. I think he’s the last of his generation of comedians and to have Carl’s son, little Rob Reiner then, end up murdered this way was unimaginable decades ago.

I am certain that everyone who was at this holiday party, from Conan O’Brien down through each and every guest, must be in anguish now. All those famous faces wondering now if they could have done anything, said just the right thing, could have possibly saved them somehow.

It is going to affect everyone terribly, mostly grief but also guilt, as in they couldn’t save their friends. Even though they really couldn’t, not when Nick was living in his parents’ home.

The wording is odd. You can send someone else to kill your parents and that would make you "responsible" but that doesn't mean you did it yourself. Not that that is what happened here since I have no idea, I just think the wording is odd.

The article said that he left a trail of blood. It also stated the the hotel bed and shower were bloody, so I'm thinking maybe he was wearing dark clothes that hid the blood stains from the naked eye?
I'm going out on a limb and saying "trail of blood" was hyperbole, IMO. Unless they meant there was a trail of blood from the bed to the shower or from the shower to the bed....?

People who use knives to kill often cut themselves. He could have still been bleeding when he returned to the hotel.

Do we know why he was in a hotel at all? I thought he lived with his parents.

Just an aside...this young man who had a very long-standing drug problem was brought along to a Hollywood party presumably by his parents? The very last place someone with his history should have been at. There's usually a lot of drinking at these parties and possibly drug use?
I'm not famous but have been at some of these parties in the past. Open bar, also marijuana and other drugs. I'm talking forty years ago (I'm old) but I don't think things have changed much.

I think they’re just being careful prior to him being charged.

Part of the same pattern from yesterday, where they wouldn’t even provide basic information to protect the process.

The stated reason is a little odd, ‘too keep an eye on him’. Nothing has been suggested to indicate this was a ‘wild’ party particularly as it was held at a posh restaurant where suits were the standard male attire, other than Nick in his hoodie.
JMO

“According to the sources, the Reiners asked if they could bring Nick to the party out of concern for him and to “keep an eye on him.” At the party, the sources added, Nick “exhibited antisocial behavior,” such as staring at people.”
