Hypothetical question if i may..
Had the Shermans been alive after Oct 7, 2023, would that change anything, would they still be murdered?

A cache of unsealed documents related to the murder of Barry and Honey Sherman is revealing new details about the investigation into the deaths of the Toronto billionaire couple, including an interview with one relative who believes 'someone was making a statement' in their killings.

I think it would be more difficult as there is better surveillance.
Ironically, today was the first time when I thought that the reason for their murders could be religious. However, I looked at the NW, his gait and all. He appears Caucasian. And a typical word Holly could use about such people is not even offensive, it is a part of so many jokes. So, unlikely.
However, one of the comments about the case (made online) surprised me. Where I read it, there were lots of conspiracy theories as usual (the case was not presented deeply), and then, someone new to the case posted, "I don't think too many care whether the case is solved or not." Asked why, the person said, "they could have offended many, just look at Barry and his own uncle's children."
It was like a light switch. Not about the relatives, I believe that line was ruled out. However, it put me on another trail, far from Honey. I view her as big, larger than life person, maybe with a mouth on her, but probably warm-hearted and empathetic. Such people can blab something and be forgiven. But Barry, thought I...such a workaholic, a cutthroat businessman and not a great reader of people. He could have offended so many and never noticed it. Never noticed means, never told to his family that he'd made an enemy. It could be something deeply personal, but hidden for years as Barry was an important person with local party connections. But retirement immediately changes one's status to less significant, even if he was a mega-donor. And, the Shermans were moving. Never a better time. Plus, the way they lived, the Shermans were not too suspicious or paranoid, so it could be easy.
So either someone who bore a grudge against Barry and maybe, lived close enough to observe the family? Perhaps he came to dislike Holly, maybe he had some negative feelings against their religion, but I think it was someone who initially hated Barry, and for Barry. Regardless. And since Barry spent all time working, JMO, it was someone who thought he got the shorter end of the deal in a business transaction, or maybe could never forget how Barry presented it.
So since the question of one kid/ex is always up in the air, it is possible. 50%
Another 50% - someone deeply offended in the process of business, and not recently.
I hope it doesn't read as victim blaming, but when such a case is not solved for 7 years, perhaps it is OK to discuss all theories.
