It just occurred to me that if Biden put tariffs on penguins, the Republicans would be all over that, in an uproar. When their own mentally incompetent presidential choice does that, they start throwing around Greek letter equations, fuzzy arithmetic, or claiming it was intentional because someone falsely gave a penguin Island as their home. Nothing but excuses and denial, when it is obvious that Trump is destroying the USA because his Greek equation told him that self-destruction will make him rich.
I certainly am no fan of the Democratic Party, but they ALWAYS have to be the adult in the room. In the meantime, the Republican Party goes around screaming about immigrants eating pets or some other nonsense, or make up lies about trans people. The Republican media narrative is to lie to their audience and get them angry at the most mundane culture war issues while the oligarchs fleece every one of us.

Also Trump is only doing these tariffs to consolidate economic power and get companies to come groveling to get a 'carve out' exception so they are loyal to him, and punish those who don't try to bend the knee.

Dow futures sink 1,300 points after Trump defends tariffs as 'medicine' to fix trade deficit

Take a burner phone and have a pro Trump photo on your main screen.
And lock down your facebook page ... I've heard it from a friend who says they pulled hers up. She had it set to private.

Thanking my stars I've never had a social media account of any kind. Nor given up my biologicals to 23andMe or any of its ilk.

Who knows what this administration will do with that information once they inevitably get their hands on it?

The Asian markets are in dropping badly, with the major indices dropping to a level not seen since the last depression of 2008.

I think Trump likes the thought that the Asian countries he is targeting are hurting. Of course, it's not actually because of the impact of the tariffs.

It's because Trump has destabilized the US markets and the US economy through his flippant and poorly-planned actions.

Asian share markets routed in early trading as Trump says ‘you have to take medicine’

US president tells reporters the levies are ‘medicine to fix something’ as Nikkei tumbles nearly 9% in early trading, worsening huge losses from last week’s announcement
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One late on Sunday, the US president indicated he was not concerned about market losses that have already wiped out nearly $6tn in value from US stocks. “I don’t want anything to go down. But sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something,” he said.

''''''Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index tumbled nearly 9% in early trading on Monday, as concerns over a tariff-induced global recession continued to rip through markets.

The Nikkei dropped as much as 8.8% to hit 30,792.74 for the first time since October 2023.

South Korea-----
In South Korea, trading on the Kospi index was halted for five minutes at 9.12am as stocks plummeted.

The Taiwan stock exchange said early on Monday it would roll out more policies to stabilise markets if there were “irrational falls”. Australian shares were also sharply lower.'''''''

Someone is going to deal out some medicine to Donald, any day now..

The world needs to pivot; time to move to the Euro as the global base currency.

AKA de-dollarize.

I don't use my facebook page, and have never done so.
I do use it to look at others pages but leave no comments.

Someone upthread, I think it was Otto, said that US products are not known for quality.

That is true now, but as an old, I know it wasn't always true. "Made in the USA" when I was young was a mark of quality and not just an advertising slogan. Products labeled "Made in Japan" were seen as cheap, inferior goods.

Mr. Izzy and I have been married for 26 years and our washer is a Maytag that he bought at a garage sale before we even met, when it was already about 20 years old.

At nearly 50 years old, it's still going, although it does have its issues.

Somewhere along the line someone decided that making products that last wouldn't be nearly as profitable as making products with a much shorter lifespan. And here we are.

I've always thought of US products as being of good quality.
Has that changed ?

It's amazing the turnaround, like @IzzyBlanche says, Japanese products years ago had a reputation as being of poor quality.
That changed and I remember in the early 80s drooling over Japanese top of the range quality stereos.
I remember I wanted an Onkyo Stereo system and used to go and look at it in the Harvey Norman listening room.
I couldn't justify the eye watering price. And bought a Pioneer one instead but was never totally happy with the sound,

I wonder how many Americans actually believe that 7.5 billion people across the globe, speaking different languages, will chose to 'take Donald Trumps medicine'? I suspect not one of them , he is after all a failed business man, a ridiculous politican, and clearly deranged..

You forget St Andrews!
There’s not a cat in hells chance Scotland would let Trump have St. Andrews!

Turnberry, which he does own, got vandalised by a pro Palestine group last week and is currently closed.

From what I have seen, the US has always had a tendency towards protectionistism which protects certain inefficient or outdated industries. Historically this has been steel, largely because of the unionisation of that industry, which has meant US steel production has become increasingly uncompetitive over many decades. Foreign steel is cheaper and often higher quality (except the crap which comes from China) than domestic steel, but a tariff wall ensures that it can't be imported except at a price which exceeds that of domestic steel. While protecting US jobs, it ensures that the US consumer pays much more than necessary for steel products such as appliances and vehicles.

The other instance which I have only recently become aware of relates to trucks. US regulations do not allow the import of foreign trucks under 25 years old. This means that US-built trucks are decades behind those built by European and Japanese companies in terms of technology, driver and other road-user safety, fuel efficiency, design and pretty much everything else because there is no pressure on them to innovate and compete. There's an interesting YouTube channel by Bruce Wilson (Bruce Wilson), a US former trucker who managed to get a brand new Scania into the US as a demo vehicle, highlighting the differences between it and trucks still being built in the US. It's worth watching a few of his videos, especially those in which US truckers are given chance to test drive the Scania, and listening to their reactions.

Medicine, and not even a spoonful of sugar with it.

It’s called “Planned Obsolescence.” Our cars are usually obsolete, but I’m really glad we bought a brand new one two years ago for the first time since we bought our slightly used 2005 Toyota Avalon in 2007. This Hyundai Tucson is smarter than we are, which we need! 🥸

Really... this is .. well.. it's just looney toons stuff, it's the wild surmises of a person who's vision is gothic and entirely a matter of weird fantasy... nothing about what he is saying is in any way, shape or form the product of a mind that is working correctly...

Otto said: "No one in the USA can claim that they had no part in the re-election of Trump. They either voted for him, or were too lazy to vote."

Hello? Nearly half of U.S. voters voted for Kamala Harris for President in the November election. Biden wasn't running.
I stand corrected. Harris is somewhat forgettable. I forgot about her. As a political leader running for president, she must be one of the most important politicians in the USA. I haven't heard anything from her regarding Trump's war against most of the world. Why is she so quiet?

And even if he wasn't obviously deranged, he would still be as dumb as a rock.
