Trump. who 's claim to fame is 'he was the dumbest student I ever had... is up against some disciplined thinkers.. Claudia Sheinbaum , Mexico's El Presidente, is an environmental engineer, She was one of the scientists and policymakers who shared the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace for their work on the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

and Mark Carney. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University in 1988, then studied at the University of Oxford, where he earned a master's degree in 1993 and a doctorate in 1995.

And one must include Keir Starmer , a Knight of the realm, SIr Kier Starmer. British PM, Starmer graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Leeds in 1985 and gained a postgraduate Bachelor of Civil Law degree at St Edmund Hall at the University of Oxford in 1986. He became a barrister in 1987 at the Middle Temple, becoming a bencher there in 2009.

And darling Emanuel Macron. of France .. Macron studied philosophy at Paris Nanterre University. He completed a master's degree in public affairs at Sciences Po and graduated from the École nationale d'administration in 2004. He worked as a senior civil servant at the Inspectorate General of Finances and investment banker at Rothschild & Co.

and so on...........Pedro Sanchez... of Spain...In 2012, Pedro Sánchez received his Doctorate in Economics from Camilo José Cela University, where he lectured in economics.

and Lawrence Wong, Singapore.... Wong pursued higher education in the United States, first at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics (1994), and then at the University of Michigan, where he earned a master’s degree in applied economics (1995). A decade later he completed a master’s in public administration at Harvard University (2004) ( Lawrence is a particular favorite of mine.. he is a superb administrator. ) .

@Trooper .... you DO KNOW though, that tRump is diligently trying to dumb down this country.

I am shocked at the weak behavior of the academic environment. Its all about the money. Columbia, for pete's sake, COLUMBIA gave into him completely. Now the students M UST take over to get their institutions to beef up.

Tariffs , immigration, firings--all of academia needs to fight.
But I suspect there will be many more poorly endowed are going to fail and fall. They are so dependent on grants and other government funding programs to survive. This is going to be sad.

It's going to be interesting to see how all of this pans out for diamond sales in the US, which effectively produces no diamonds within its borders.

Around 30% of diamonds are produced in Russia - sanctioned.

Most other producers are being subjected to major tariff increases:

Botswana - 25% of global production and 37% tariff
Canada - 15% of global production and uncertain tariff position
Angola - 10% of global production and 32% tariff
DRC - 9% of global production and 11% tariff

There are also other smaller producers in the market including South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia, Liberia, Australia and Sierra Leone, all of whom are being hit by increased tariffs.

In addition, India (26% tariff) is the global centre for diamond cutting and polishing as well as the global leader in the production of lab-grown diamonds.

It therefore looks as though diamond prices are going to see sharp increases in the US.

Will angry US brides be rioting in the streets? And will they have to settle for smaller rocks? (j/k)

We really do need that laughing emoji option!!!
I wonder if rich speculators are buying them all up. These are the things that do not get reported until long after it happens...
WHAT is going to be hoarded now??? hmmmmmmmmmm

  • #525
The vast majority of mined diamonds (80 percent) aren't worn by brides - they're used for industrial purposes. At a Mohs hardness of ten, there's nothing harder. So as a cutting, polishing, and abrading agent, they're incredibly vital in all kinds of industries.

Also, 90 percent of synthetic diamonds are produced in China.

MOO

thanks for this additional info on diamonds.....really good to know.
I still wonder if there will be big industrial hoarding....

She keeps away from him. I don't think they function as a normal couple. She's making sure she's getting something (likely money) out of the deal, otherwise she would have left him. As soon as he turns away from her she stops smiling.

they have enough soup on each other... Those protective mechanisms will keep them together...for a bit.
There are plenty of articles out there indicating they have separate sleeping suites, and there have been major rewrites of prenups etc.. opo moo... but who knows if the sources are really reliable. so left as moo.
But agree.......... Not a funcional normal couple.

Did we already talk about the Senate vote regarding tariffs on Canada?

"Four Republican Senators joined all the Democrats in voting against Donald Trump tonight in the United States Senate...in favor of a resolution that would nullify any claim of presidential authority to impose tariffs on Canada. "

From BBC live feed:

Former US Treasury secretary Larry Summers says higher inflation is "almost inevitable" under Donald Trump's new trade order.

“This is the biggest self-inflicted wound we've put on our economy in history," he tells ABC News.

He projects that the loss to the US economy as a result of the tariffs would be comparable to oil prices doubling, adding: "We've never seen anything like this before."

Summers says: "There's no one, virtually, who doesn't work for the president who thinks this is a good idea."

There are no exemptions for the farm industry. If exemptions are added later, it will make no difference because the damage is done. Trump lurching through tariff decisions has caused permanent damage. The USA government will be forced to subsidize the USA agriculture industry, exactly as it did during Trump's last presidency and tariff recklessness.

"American farmers say U.S.-imposed tariffs on Canadian goods are having a "devastating effect" on the local agriculture sector south of the border.
...

Sombke said 90 per cent of the state's potash — which is used as a fertilizer and is currently being tariffed at 10 per cent — comes from Canada, while much of its farming equipment carries a "made in Canada" stamp.
...

The 25 per cent steel tariffs could make purchases of necessary farm equipment much more expensive, he told host Marcy Markusa in a Friday interview with CBC's Information Radio.

For example, he says Canada makes good-quality no-till drills — specialized equipment that plants seeds without disturbing the soil — but their $1-million price tag would cost a U.S. farmer $250,000 more with the tariff.
...

"The degree of uncertainty that has been created by the last few months of policy change in the United States, I think has done permanent damage," he said. ... "People, investors, farmers, producers now have less certainty. They are less willing to undertake the kind of investment that generates economic growth," he said."

@otto otto otto.... Thank you so much for your detailed reports of the farmlands. This is such a vast part of our country that includes so many states. ...

The devil IS in the details...... I wouldn't have known enough about the farm equipment , potash, and fertilizers. thank you.
And this devil in the details is unknown to all the people that are holding their breath, and believing tRumps rattlings THAT HAS NO DETAILS.
I have been worried about sick about all the farmers and workers in the Farmland since day 1. Everyone in the US should be worried about them at this point.

all moo... but geeeeez this is real.

musk doesn’t seem to be too happy about the tariffs

“Elon Musk now taking open shots at fellow top WH adviser Peter Navarro, who happens to be an architect of the Trump tariffs Musk has largely avoided commenting on.”

[…]

At a videoconference with the Italian far-right League party later on Saturday, Musk called for Europe and the U.S. to move toward a “zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free-trade zone.”

Given the abuse that T dishes out on his own people, and given his obvious unfaithfulness, I believe that Mrs T has some difficult things to endure.

I don't think she cares, do you?

oh my god… a bit more about peter navarro, who advised trump on the tariffs. you can’t make this up.

In his 2011 book “Death by China,” President Donald Trump’s senior adviser Peter Navarro quoted a China hawk named “Ron Vara” to prove his point on the threat posed by Beijing to the American economy.

[…]

There’s just one problem – Vara doesn’t appear to exist, according to an investigation by an Australian academic, who determined that Vara is actually Navarro. Ron Vara is even an anagram of Navarro’s last name.

This video from Meidas Network has some good comprehensive shots of the protests. It gives a good idea of just how massive they were.

That's great! I hope it continues and grows.

Interesting that Musk felt so threatened that by the peaceful protests that he wanted them to be treated as though they were the same as the Jan 6 brutalists. I like Musk's propaganda pot-shots, claiming that rich people gave money to 1200 individual protests in the USA, Canada and other countries, implying that people only speak up when paid. Were the Jan 6 protesters paid?

Thus showing he hasn't got a clue about international trade. How on earth is a relatively poor country like Vietnam supposed to generate sufficient domestic demand to consume as many American goods as it exports to the USA? Vietnam's role in the global economy is as a source of cheap labour to keep down the prices of basic goods like clothes and shoes for Western consumers. The trade inbalance between the USA and Vietnam isn't anything to do with tariffs or currency manipulation or anything like that and everything to do with the relative standard of living of the two countries.

At the time her team said there was no hidden message, but later Mrs T told the media:

"It was for the people and for the left-wing media who are criticising me. I want to show them I don't care. You could criticise whatever you want to say. But it will not stop me to do what I feel is right."

Making it about herself took away from the purpose of her visit. It's all about photo ops and rarely about substance. To me, she showed her colors when she insisted that Obama's Hawaii birth certificate wasn't real.

Here's the other piece ... about the previous Trump tariff mistake and taxpayer funded bailout to compensate farmers. It will be the same bailout for farmers this time, and more industries will need a bailout (e.g.: automakers).

"The Trump administration gave more taxpayer dollars to farmers harmed by the administration’s trade policies than the federal government spends each year building ships for the Navy or maintaining America’s nuclear arsenal.
...

To shore up political support from farmers, Donald Trump approved increasing amounts of government aid to farmers harmed by the trade policies that the Trump administration itself initiated. Trump was open about the purpose of the payments. “I sometimes see where these horrible dishonest reporters will say that ‘oh jeez, the farmers are upset,’” he told attendees of an Illinois farmer show in August 2019. “Well, they can’t be too upset, because I gave them $12 billion and I gave them $16 billion this year. . . . I hope you like me even better than you did in 2016.”

Trump Tariff Aid To Farmers Cost More Than U.S. Nuclear Forces

BRUSSELS — European Union countries will seek to present a united front in the coming days against U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, likely approving a first set of targeted countermeasures on up to $28 billion of U.S. imports from dental floss to diamonds.

[…]

The European Commission, which coordinates EU trade policy, will propose to members late on Monday a list of U.S. products to hit with extra duties in response to Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs rather than the broader reciprocal levies.

It is set to include U.S. meat, cereals, wine, wood and clothing as well as chewing gum, dental floss, vacuum cleaners and toilet paper.

One product that has received more attention and exposed discord in the bloc is bourbon. The Commission has earmarked a 50% tariff, prompting Trump to threaten a 200% counter-tariff on EU alcoholic drinks if the bloc goes ahead.
