He appeared to have been rational and intelligent in his book...but maybe he had a strong editor or even ghost writer.

But, I also think ideology creates that black and white thinking process...Trump good, Europe bad. No shades of gray.

Someone said he could never last as President, he's just fundamentally too unlikeable.

For further info ....

China's exports to the US are about 14% of its exports. We know (widely reported) that Apple will hurt, and probably others - as telephones, integrated circuits, and computers are China's largest exports.

Canada and Mexico receive the largest amount of US exports - China is 3rd on the list.
(Note that while receiving the largest amount of US exports, Canada and Mexico still export more to the US than it imports from the US).

Your links show that the percentage of China's exports to the US are over 16%. According the WITS chart, the US is China's largest export market, when measured by countries. That's over $588 billion in exports. China does have other markets, but the size and type of exports it sends to the US are significant. All I can say, as this senseless tariff exercise continues on, is that we will see how various countries adapt.

President Trump said there could be a potential trade deal in the works with South Korea, saying the country has a team traveling to the United States to make a deal, nearly a week after Trump’s latest tariff announcement.

Sadly, the US isn't able to negotiate with the same level of preparation, expertise and intelligence as any Asian Nation. Trump ended trade agreement that were the product of years of negotiations with the best economists the US could provide. Those economists are not invited to the table. Instead, there have been replaced by people who have no understanding of international trade. They will get their @ss handed to them and think they won the debate.

Sorry, I quoted the AI version (14 point something percent) - for which it is hard to provide the relevant link.

I did read an article recently that said that Biden was trying to weaken the Chinese markets.

The United States has launched its third crackdown in three years on China’s semiconductor industry, curbing exports to 140 companies, including chip equipment maker Naura Technology Group, among other moves.

The latest effort on Monday to hobble Beijing’s chipmaking ambitions also hits Chinese chip toolmakers Piotech, ACM Research and SiCarrier Technology with new export restrictions as part of the package, which also takes aim at shipments of advanced memory chips and more chipmaking tools to China.

China has , at this point, today, access to 8 billion customers.. 1.2 billion domestic, 7.75 billion overseas...... the USA has, at this point almost every country on a path to refusing to buy USA goods .. that leaves Trump with 350 million domestic buyers in his country, 1/2 of whom , at least 1/2 most likely more will not be able to afford made in the USA brands.. which leaves Trump , realistically, 1.25 American consumers, not all of whom prefer American goods, .. food, electronics, cars, clothes, household goods, etc..

I just heard on live news that Trump is waiting for China to phone him, but China is not phoning.

Trump believes that China has to make a deal with the USA, that China wants to make a deal. Trump said that he's going to be nice, but China has to make a deal ... and China has to phone Trump.
Sorry Donald, China's just not that into you.

'''Cathay Pacific Australian Passenger Deported from New York, US

The traveler reported that three separate interview teams participated in his interrogation before ultimately deciding to deport him based primarily on his "unusual route" through Asia.

NEW YORK- An Australian traveler was deported from the United States (US) after being detained for 8 hours at John F Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York simply because he arrived via Hong Kong (HKG) on Cathay Pacific (CX) instead of taking a direct flight.

The incident represents one of the growing number of cases where foreign visitors face extreme vetting under recent immigration policies, with the traveler losing his $15,000 Florida cruise because he missed the sailing after being denied entry despite having valid documentation, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Border agents questioned his travel route from Sydney (SYD) to New York (JFK) via Hong Kong (HKG), considering it suspicious despite it being a common cost-saving option for many international travelers.

During his 8-hour detention, officials conducted extensive examinations of his electronic devices, including his laptop and iPhone.

Travelers from traditionally “safe” countries like Australia and the UK no longer feel secure visiting the United States.

In another disturbing case, a young British woman endured 19 days of detention in an immigration facility. While U.S. officials deny targeting travelers based on political beliefs or nationalities, the increasing frequency of these incidents suggests systematic changes in border enforcement practices.''''

( Making my journey to Montreal via Sydney/Helsinki/Montreal not at all long or uncomfortable...)

Not only ridiculous but illustrates an instability in his thinking. On one hand, he's giving countries ultimatums but on the other hand he's saying it's not written in stone we can negotiate (translation - give us your raw materials, or else). I read the only country that has made real overtures to Trump and his tariff scheme is an African country, Lethoso, who's citizens' daily wage averages out to about $6 USD.

With a huge drop in exports to the US, China may experience some kind of recession. I think this trade war can become a "hot" war, because trade helps avoid war. China and the US had a lot to lose if trade was disrupted. However uncomfortable it was, there was too much at stake in the economies of both countries to allow their relationship to deteriorate to a point where war was a possibility.

Now we have leaders who probably are incapable of restoring relations. Saving face, huge egos, the needless destruction of economies, all for no sane purpose.
so we will be saved by TEMU and Amazon....

Greer, BTW, has 2 masters degrees (one obtained in France, and he is fluent in French) and a law degree, so he is educated and lived abroad. Possibly one of the best trade folks in this administration. If he can't explain it, it might be inexplicable, IMO.
No doubt because there is no justification. MOO.
(Thanks for the background on Greer.)

Late ETA: and from the video link I provided, I loved that Warner said to Greer, "you're a much smarter person than that answer." Greer had NO justification for the Australian tariffs.

Australia has the lowest rate available under the new program. There isn’t a lower rate. imo

There is the lower rate of zero. Or even the average of 4.3% like it used to be, before our Free Trade Agreement went into effect.

The US has a trade surplus with Australia. As our PM repeatedly says ... it "makes no sense" to tariff a country that buys more from the US than the US buys from that country. That is simply encouraging us to look elsewhere for what we import from the US.

We haven't even played a part in the US incurring its trade debt.

The United States-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) entered into force on January 1, 2005. As a result of the FTA, tariffs that averaged 4.3 percent were eliminated on more than 99% of the tariff lines for qualifying U.S. manufactured goods exported to Australia. In addition to tariff elimination, the FTA affords substantial benefits in a broad range of other sectors.

He is also now shouting about instituting pharmaceutical tariffs this week. China, India, maybe Ireland.

Has there been any study on the effect of increased drug prices on those people on fixed incomes, with chronic diseases that need their insulin, their antibiotics, their anti-epileptics, their pain medications? Or medications for the children of of people that work low-wage jobs that have no healthcare provided by their employers.

Have any of the GOP Representatives or Senators stood up for their senior citizens and veterans and demand to stop this?

I am horrified by the random, capricious and completely unstudied effects of fanning his ego. It is unconscionable to claim to be able to move pharmaceutical manufacturing to the US on the turn of a dime. Of course, he could have RFK Jr tell the FDA to waive all the safety inspections and method validations that are done to assure the safety and quality of medications.

Or worse yet, RFJ Jr will just tell everyone to take vitamins instead of real valid medications.

Trump is exultant, claiming all the coutries want to "kiss my a&&". As vulgar and demeaning as it gets.

He's like a sadistic insane emporer demanding more and more public obeisance so he can crow about his glory.

Its really madman territory.

If I was them, I wouldn't go near him. The US is not necessarily looking at pure trade agreements. It seems to want to attach strings to any revised tariffs.

(below is from your link)

“The president always wants the same thing in any negotiation: more,” said a former administration official.

Ideas being discussed run the gamut, and include possible action on securing the freedom of Americans wrongfully detained abroad, committing to working with US artificial intelligence companies, buying more US energy or combatting global drug trafficking, according to five people familiar with the brainstorming sessions.
