"At an April 8 executive order signing, Trump said, "We’re taking in almost $2 billion a day in tariffs. Two billion a day."

The U.S. Treasury’s April 8 daily statement contradicts that: It showed $192 million in revenues for custom duties and certain excise taxes."

I have a feeling that the US might tariff itself right out of the world trade market.
If Trump is relying on China to fall over, he's got a long wait.. and I suspect his reasoning was if they fell over, Canada would capitulate and agree to becoming a state instead of a nation. ( like.. who would?? who?? )..

China's export to the USA is only 14% of it's overall export quantity. . now,, 14% is a bit of a blow. but he is addressing folks who have recovered from Mao, Red Guards ,, Gang of Four, they know what their parents stood up against, they know the procedure.. bunker down, ride it out. China will most likely pick up that 14% from elsewhere over the next 3 months...

I cannot even comprehend why he would imagine that China would fold.. it's such an unrealistic thought process , born out of wishful delusion.

The US dollar slumped on Friday as waning confidence in the US economy prompted investors to ditch US assets to the benefit of safe havens like the Swiss franc, yen and euro, as well as gold.

The yellow metal recorded a new all-time peak in early Asia trade, and the franc notched a fresh decade high, Reuters reports.

Investors dumped Wall Street stocks overnight, as the powerful rally on Wednesday – when Donald Trump abruptly paused higher tariff rates on dozens of trading partners – reversed course in a 24-hour frenetic period for markets.

Longer-dated US Treasuries are also selling off, putting 10-year yields on course for their biggest weekly jump since 2001.

The Chinese yuan had tumbled to an all-time low in offshore trading on Tuesday, but erased all those losses a day later, surging again on Thursday, and was strengthening in early trading.

Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone, said:

There has been a pronounced ‘sell US’ vibe flowing through broad markets and into the classic safe-haven assets, with the USD losing the safe-haven bid.
Trump’s 90-day tariff respite – which came despite his insistence for days that his policies would never change – didn’t include China. Instead, he ratcheted up duties on Chinese imports to an effective rate of 145%, further escalating the high-stakes confrontation between the world’s two largest economies.

Does anyone, anyone at all believe that 75 nations have been ringing Donald, begging for mercy???

Or even that 15 of them are turning up tomorrow at the Whitehouse in person , to wag on with Donny about their unfortunate predicament???
Well, Mr Percival Penguin, the current leader of Heard Island, was on his way to discussions at the WH, when he unfortunately crashed his transport. His condition is unknown, and it is unclear if he will make the appointment.

This CBC report released yesterday explains why young men in Canada are leaning towards Conservative. The primary reason is reaction to woke ideology that consumed society for a few years. Additionally, because equal rights for women are more or less in place in Western societies (60 years after 1960s women's liberation), men feel that they are the unheard, under-valued and under-privileged. They see Trump and right-wing politics as their path to the man's man and the restoration of their place in society as home-owners, father, provider.

That may well be the demographic group that put a game show host in charge of the USA.

Yes, the tariffs are seen by some as promoting “manly” factory jobs. Jesse Waters on Fox said this…
When you sit behind a screen all day, it makes you a woman. Studies have shown this. Studies have shown this. And if you’re out working, like building robots like Harold, you are around other guys. You’re not around HR ladies and lawyers that gives you estrogen.

And it gets worse. We women can go back to the kitchen and make sandwiches.

Psst ... walnuts grow in Ontario.
I had no idea! I did check the package, which said made in Ontario. Smaller print said "product of California". I'll keep looking for those Ontario walnuts!

Perhaps they're referring to Ontario, California?

Probably, but Canadians are quietly boycotting all things from the USA. We carefully check food packaging for the words "product of Canada". If it says "made in Canada, it means at least 51% is Canadian, which isn't good enough. We will do without nuts if necessary until the end of the war. Meanwhile, Atlantic lobster is $13CAN in Western Canada. That's a deal!

Cashews are grown commercially in Vietnam and Brazil. A small number can be grown in southern Florida, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, but not enough for a country-wide supply.

Brazil Nuts are not grown in the US. They are generally grown in Brazil or Bolivia

The US grows commercial quantities of almonds, hazelnuts, pistashios, pecans, pine nuts, walnuts and macademia nuts. Peanuts are grown in the US although they are technically legumes, not tree nuts.

I don't know that Australia imports any nuts from the US.
Not sure about other fruit.
In the past I have seen Californian oranges at Aldi.

I guess the question Trump needs to ask himself is whether breaking the system will have the outcome he wants. Today, it doesn't look like it. If he fails, will he be out of a job?
You seem to assume that Trump has the ability to reflect on things, on issues- he does not- he isn't going to ask himself anything because as far as he is concerned, and in his mind he knows everything!!! Oh, if he fails he won't be out of a job, but he will have ruined America, which he is on his way to doing right now!
