I was responding to some posts on here. It is ludicrous JD would expect to meet with the Pope during Easter weekend.

@dotta
He, I am pretty sure, will try to get an in person meeting and probably has already applied or whatever one does to meet in person. The arrogance is huge. Just being there is massive to him, Mr. family man, all that, being shown.

Crikey, that's a read and a half.... He's a man on the edge , for sure.... Maybe the Holy Father is giving him a bit of a telling off... Vance probably started the conversation by telling him how to run the entire Catholic church, and the Pope said, 'don't try and teach your grandma to suck eggs, pal. '..

Do we know for sure that Vance was invited by the Vatican to see the Pope? I wonder if perhaps Vance invited himself.

Allen I have read is it was a planned trip to meet with Meroni (IIRC). He attended Good Friday service and there was chatter about meeting with a cardinal. I'm guessing he was not invited by Vatican but allowed to attend the service with his family. The go to India next. I doubt he will attend religious services there. Pretty sure Usha V is Hindu. IIRC. MOO

"Nicholas Gilbert, a dairy farmer who operates Adon Farms in upstate New York, experienced tariff sticker shock when a routine shipment of cow feed from Ontario cost him $2,200 more than expected.

“I’m not even sure it’s legal! We contracted for the price on delivery,” .....

Unfortunately for Gilbert, the tariff is very much legal. Like many American business owners, he mistakenly believed that tariffs on imported goods would be paid by the foreign exporter."

Of course he did. Trump said that tariffs would make USA people rich again. People believed Trump, and assumed that foreign companies would pay that USA tariff tax. When reality collides with propaganda, Trump supporters finally get it ... but they have to experience it first hand to believe it.

about the pope - at this point it’s not even certain he will present at the urbi et orbi on easter sunday! all his usual tasks have been delegated to cardinals, although he’s been doing more and more recently so the expectation is he will try to be present as much as possible.

jmo but i think the pope might actually be interested in meeting and talking to vance. not because he necessarily likes vance so much but because immigration is a topic close to his heart, and he chose to “call out” the united states immigration policy before, when it’s not typical for the vatican to do so! but it might not be doable in one of the busiest weeks of the year, while still recovering.

Our farmer friend needs to check his incoterms and make sure that in future he's buying on a DDP basis. Of course, it's entirely up to the seller if they wish to sell on a DDP basis, and if they do they will obviously roll the duty into the price of the product and charge more for it.

As this thread is supposed to be about Canada, I've noticed that the opinion polls for the upcoming general election have started to narrow somewhat.

The NDP seem to be heading pretty much for a wipeout with what looks to be a return to two party politics outside of Quebec. The Conservatives actually beat the Liberals in the popular vote last time around, but the Liberals got the most seats because their vote held up better than expected in Ontario, the largest province.

What I think this all means is that the Liberals are still on course for an overall majority, especially if all the Conservatives are doing is racking up votes in the prairie provinces where they already hold most of the seats.

Trump's voters sadly were ignorant about what tariffs really meant: they believed the country was socked with the cost, not the consumer. Hello: he lied to you--and you bought his lies hook, line and sinker, and now WE ALL PAY FOR IT!!! THANKS A LOT

Kamala tried and tried to explain tariffs to them as a tax they would have to pay, but they chose not to listen. Of course, they will never believe Trump lied, but it certainly shows that he thought they were dumb enough to believe him instead of doing their own research.

"Thousands took to the streets across the US on Saturday to protest recent actions by President Donald Trump.

Saturday's protests addressed a number of Trump actions, including those by the the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) - Trump's initiative to cut US government jobs and other spending - and the administration's unwillingness to bring about the return of Ábrego García, a citizen of El Salvador.

"This is a very perilous time in America for liberty," Thomas Bassford, told the Associated Press, while in Boston with his partner, daughter and two grandsons. "I wanted the boys to learn about the origins of this country and that sometimes we have to fight for freedom." "

I know - when tariffs were first announced, Trump propaganda was everywhere claiming that tariffs make USA consumers rich while foreign companies pay into the External Revenue Office. Canadians were trying to explain how tariffs work, but it's apparent today that the only way people in the USA understand government decisions is when those executive orders deplete their bank accounts. Then there's a stunned reaction of "wait a minute ..."

But ... but ... tariffs are a "tax cut", aren't they?
Leavitt lied right into the media cameras, straight-faced.

What on earth do they discuss in the Oval Office?
"How do we present that tariffs will increase their prices at the supermarkets and elsewhere?"
"Oh, just tell them it is a tax cut and they'll believe us. Karo has the cute and innocent look about her."?

imo

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claims tariffs are a tax cut for Americans ....
