Canada, Greenland, Mexico, etc - USA Tariffs / Trade War commencing March 2025 #5

"If Donald Trump were trying to lose his trade war with China, it’s hard to see what he would be doing differently. The president’s gambit is likely to strengthen China’s geopolitical position, embolden Beijing militarily, and diminish both the United States’ global standing and its economy.

“We export one-fifth to them of what they export to us,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently remarked, “so that is a losing hand for them.” That view has things backwards.

The fact that the American economy is hooked on Chinese goods is a massive weakness for the U.S., not an advantage. For many categories of goods, China is not only America’s top supplier but also the world’s dominant supplier, meaning that the U.S. can’t simply get them from other countries.

Pivoting to producing these goods at home would take years, if not decades."

This is what the Vatican said about Vance's meeting with Cardinal Pietro Parolin and British Archbishop Paul Gallagher yesterday:

"the parties had “an exchange of opinions” on a variety of issues including the contentious topic of migration, as well as religious freedom, global conflicts, difficult humanitarian situations, and prisoners" ... Other issues “of mutual interest were also discussed”

This is what Vance said was discussed:

“their shared religious faith, Catholicism in the United States, the plight of persecuted Christian communities around the world, and President Trump’s commitment to restoring world peace”.

Vance also met for "a few minutes" with the pope today to exchange Easter greetings.

"An exchange of opinions" strikes me as an interesting choice of words. That sounds less like a cordial discussion and more like Vance telling the cardinals where they were going wrong and the cardinals, in the nicest possible way, arguing back.

Probably said that Italy was failing the Vatican City and that America needed it for .... insert whatever crazy reason you can think of.
Exchange of opinions does imply to me that there was some sort of clash/disagreements. The pope has made some of his feelings well known on some of the Trump administrations actions of late.
Healing wishes to the Pope, hope he feels better and stronger each day passing

During the French language Leadership Debate, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh insulted the monarchy. Insulting the Head of State of Canada is one way to reduce votes!

"Unfortunately, in the last minority government you showed that you were as useless as the monarchy is," Singh lobbed at the Bloc leader"

King Charles is in Italy this weekend. He specifically mentioned Canada and endorsed EU support for Canada. This is in response to the USA government ongoing threat to destroy Canada's economy with the goal to steal the country's natural wealth from Canadians. The USA government wants to deprive Canadians of their way of life. The King of Canada has taken a stance, which is really important to most Canadians (excluding NDP).

"Tomorrow in Ravenna, as King of the United Kingdom and of Canada, I will have the great honour of commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of that province ... in which British and Canadian forces played a key role," he said.
...

Such attention to Canada from the King stands out, coming as it does after those who watch him closely were seeing an increase in signals and royal symbolism in support of the country as it faced repeated taunts from U.S. President Donald Trump about becoming the 51st state.
...

"That is a really big step for the sovereign to take and a surprisingly explicit show of support that we are not used to seeing."
...

"The King is head of state of Canada — and he has been at pains to send symbolic signs of support to Canada, at a time when it has been put under pressure by U.S. President Donald Trump."
...

"It's a way of reminding Italy and the European community that Canada is our friend, is our ally, Canada stands with us on a lot of the issues that are important to us, particularly support for Ukraine that was talked about in this visit and that Europe should consider itself a friend to Canada."

I'm sure the red tape is at the point where it is impossible to have the paperwork ready for border crossings. And there is no guarantee that the paperwork requirements will stay the same long enough to get through customs. When entering the US from Canada, if there is even a single box on the transport with the incorrect paperwork, then the entire truckload is sent back to wherever it came from. It's a huge waste of time and expense when the entire shipment is delayed like that.

However, when entering Canada from the US, if there is a single box with the incorrect paperwork, then the box is removed from the load and put into a bonded facility where is collects daily holding fees until the correct paperwork is submitted. The rest of the load can proceed to its destination. The US doesn't have bonded facilities to hold these type of packages, so the risk of having to send a full load back is high when the tariff rules keep changing.

This is such a costly nightmare for everyone, but especialy the consumer who is left wondering. 😵‍💫

Palmer is slamming both major parties. The Liberals (right tendencies) are "disappointing", the current Labour govt (left tendencies) are doing a "crapola job" for many of his reasons.

But he favours the Liberals (right tendencies) because they will give him billionaire-type tax cuts if they get in.

We also have a centrist party called The Greens. They are popular but can't gather enough steam. They generally give their preferential votes to Labour (left tendencies).

imo
Very similar to Canada. Conservatives are right, Liberals are left, NDP are take from the employed and give to the unemployed, Greens are in lalaland.

Trump started with bashing Democrats, then expanded first to migrants, then to Canada, then EU, China and the rest of the planet. Everyone bad, USA good.

Discussions about tax breaks for the rich has another side to it. That is, Trudeau introduced new law such that capital gains over $250k were taxed at 66%. People assume that anyone with capital gains that high must be extraordinarily rich, but that's not true. With an aging population, people die and their liquidated estates are often greater than $250k (e.g.: house sale). That means a one time large capital gain where the government takes the majority. Farmers are especially hard hit. Carney removed that unjust capital gains tax, which looks like a tax break for the rich when it isn't. The cap of $250k was returned to something like $1.4M, which is better for the average Canadian who has a one time large capital gain.

From above: Everyone bad, USA good.

Of course USA = Trump. When he talks about the USA, change USA to Me (Trump) and it makes more sense. It works for everything he says because he is always only thinking and talking about himself.

But ... but ... tariffs are a "tax cut", aren't they?
Leavitt lied right into the media cameras, straight-faced.

What on earth do they discuss in the Oval Office?
"How do we present that tariffs will increase their prices at the supermarkets and elsewhere?"
"Oh, just tell them it is a tax cut and they'll believe us. Karo has the cute and innocent look about her."?

imo

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claims tariffs are a tax cut for Americans ....
Beware of the cross ladies.

At a minimum there was clash on immigration and Ukraine.

Heh, I've never heard the NDP described quite like that. They are the labour party. I'd say that they are more likely to take from big corporations and give to the employees.

Whatever they stand for, we are very fortunate that we have more than two parties.

Otto, did you decide yet which party would be best to lead Canada? I voted yesterday. I hope for a minority government with Carney at the helm. I prefer when the parties are forced to work together. I think that brings the best outcomes.

I voted today! Now I hope for the best.

The problem that I see with a minority Liberal government is that the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois have already teamed up. That was evident during the two Leadership debates, and through other news articles.

If those two parties form a coalition, Liberal minority government might be out-numbered. I don't think a renewed NDP coalition with Liberal is an option. NDP is too far left of the new centrist Liberal Party. Furthermore, the former Liberal-NDP coalition has gone to NDP heads, and we see unpleasantness from the NDP leader.

Jagmeet Singh badmouthed King Charles, the Head of State of Canada, during the French language Leadership Debate. He claims credit for Trudeau initiatives and has had to be corrected numerous times. During both Leadership Debates, Singh lobbed accusations. While other leaders were trying to respond, Singh constantly interrupted to the extent that I could not hear the answers. It appeared rude and disruptive.

I'm curious to see whether Western Canada remains a Conservative stronghold, or whether opinions are shifting due to tariff, war and other threats from that country down South.
