Canada, Greenland, Mexico, etc - USA Tariffs / Trade War commencing March 2025 #5

Evidently there is some feeling on Wall Street that the Federal Reserve will cut the interest rates sooner than the next expected review meeting May 6-7.

I don't see how there can be anywhere near anything settled in trade, tariffs, and jobs by then. Wishful thinking.

The US economy is like a waterlogged paper towel in a swamp right now.

“I really don’t want cars from Canada,” Trump said. “So when I put tariffs on Canada, they’re paying 25 per cent, but that could go up in terms of cars. When we put tariffs on, all we’re doing is we’re saying, `We don’t want your cars, in all due respect.”’
"Carney said last week that eliminating trade barriers within Canada would benefit Canadians as he made his case to retain power ahead of an April 28 vote. Carney has set a goal of free trade within the country’s 10 provinces and three territories by July 1. Canada has long had interprovincial trade barriers."

There are trade barriers between the various component parts of Canada? How does that work?

The countries that have made this decision belong to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), mostly made up of republics that were part of the former Soviet Union:

  • Armenia
  • Azerbaijan
  • Belarus
  • Kazakhstan

  • Moldova
  • Russia
  • Tajikistan
  • Turkmenistan
  • Uzbekistan
  • Ukraine

So Ukraine is the big surprise in that list. Seems to be a Russian wishlist.

So, Trump has been saying that there are trade negotiations ongoing with the Chinese. The Chinese have denied the any such talks exist. A journalist asked Trump about this, and this was his response.

Are "they" in the room with you now, Mr President.
What a clown. Trump is a fool to think that China will play along with his ridiculous propaganda. He should stop pretending that China came crying on hands and knees begging for a deal. It's fantasy.

Is he pouting?
What a strange man.
Truly

He’s always been strange. He was an intolerable kid. His parents tried to get him into a military academy and it completely failed. He’s always been a boastful entitled jerk who modeled himself after NY Mafia dons. Nothing about him should have been accepted as a President.

Well, I was just saying I actually know people who did this - stayed for most of the year or multiple years, especially living cheaply in an RV or truck, or staying with a partner, or some communal type place.

They could get away with it because US border officers would know when you entered the US, but not when you left. The Canadian border officials would know when you came back, but not when you left. The information sharing agreement was only implemented around 2018, and even then, not all border crossings had the technology Then came the pandemic, so it probably stopped then anyway

Medical insurance doesn't know where you've been or for how long...and many young, healthy people let it lapse. People spend years backpacking around the world, they don't care about their medical insurance.

It was 9/11 in 2001 that created the department of Homeland Security and I think that's when they began a crackdown on anyone 'suspicious' crossing the border.

ETA: and obviously, before computers, there was diddly squat anyone could do to keep track of people.
Many of those things you mentioned happened in the past when technology wasn't as sophisticated as it is now. But we weren't talking about young people who go backpacking around the world or people who gamble with their health. We were talking specifically about snowbirds who by an overwhelming margin ARE older individuals who are spending money on health care while out of the country and have no intentions of letting their domestic health care coverage lapse.

“I have to be honest, as a state, it works great,” Trump said. “As a nation, considering the fact that, you know, 95 per cent of Canada, what they do is they buy from us, and they sell to us … it doesn’t make sense. If we needed something, that would be a different subject.”

If Canada shut off its crude oil and petroleum exports to the US, Trump would suddenly have to admit that the US just might need something from Canada.

Canada remains the biggest supplier - by far, HUGELY far - of crude oil and petroleum to mainland USA.
Which is, no doubt, why Trump would like the "51st state of Canada". imo

Rupert is turning up the screws.. It's a day by day thing. He has a program, it has worked very smoothly before, and probably will this time, ... Rupe got rid of Boris Johnson, and then Liz Truss and finally, he got rid of the entire Conservative Party in Britain, where they will stay in opposition for years.. ( those are just his last years prizes,, Murdoch has been doing this for decades and has an impressive wall of scalps over time )

How it goes is something like this.. he pokes the bear, and the bear screams, loudly, and then Rupe is off to the races, he has his man ( or woman ) on the hop. Next, he whittles away at the cohorts, the enablers.. your Hegseths, your Lutnicks, your Navarro's, your Noems, your Vance's... even your Mrs Vance,, no one is left out.

Then when they are reeling and screaming at Trump, ( which is Rupe's tactic ) then he winds up the pressure on his prime target. It hardly ever fails, I cannot think of one politician who bested Rupe, really. ..

Either Trump is delusional or he is frantically trying to spin a stupid yarn. I'm going for both, in this case.. I have no doubt in my mind that Xi would no more talk with Trump than he would flirt with Laura Loomer, it just isn't in his character. In fact, I doubt that even if trade talks eventuate , Xi will not deal with Trump at all. Because his signature is worthless.

Xi has all the time in the world, and time is what Trump does not have. His desire that Boeing 'defaults' with China over the Orphan Boeings is right up there with real nutso, and only serves to weaken his already frail position. Trump has to have a success.. just one, at least the mirage of one on the horizon, and all of his vision seem to run into sand , into the delta of delusion.

As an observer it's mesmerising. What it is like to live in, I just cannot comprehend such turmoil and disturbance.. Americans , really , even the ones who voted for this are being punished so severely that it hurts to see it..

The US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer is currently in meetings with Vietnam over tariff issues and there was a memo issued from his office.

At this time, I do not believe Greer is in talks with China.

But hey, to Trump they all look alike, right?
