The Mail has an article today about the additional headwinds posed to the 2028 Olympics by Trump's tariffs. Also interesting, if correct, is that the budget for the games includes bugger all for security.

20 years or so ago, my then line manager brought some Hershey's products, including kisses, back from his holiday for the team. I think everyone had one. The rest sat there for a few weeks, until one night they just disappeared. Whether they were quietly removed by the line manager, nicked by the cleaners or just binned I have no idea, but I have to say I do not like my chocolate to taste of Parmesan cheese.

Another story in today's Mail, about two young German women detained on arrival in Hawaii and then deported. There seem to have been some suspicions over their work intentions during their stay but another factor seems to have been that "they hadn't booked any accommodation for their five-week stay in Hawaii."
Is the latter a new development? Given that the road trip is a classic holiday in the US for foreigners, surely many people visit without fixed plans other than to drive from A to B.

BEIJING, April 21 (Reuters) - China on Monday accused Washington of abusing tariffs and warned countries against striking a broader economic deal with the United States at its expense, ratcheting up its rhetoric in a spiralling trade war between the world's two biggest economies.
Beijing will firmly oppose any party striking a deal at China's expense and "will take countermeasures in a resolute and reciprocal manner," its Commerce Ministry said.
The ministry was responding to a Bloomberg report, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the Trump administration is preparing to pressure nations seeking tariff reductions or exemptions from the U.S. to curb trade with China, including imposing monetary sanctions.

No it's not a new thing. US customs and immigration are suspicious of looser accommodation arrangements and travelling around rather than staying in one place. I got the third degree for only having accommodation booked for the beginning and end of a long road trip. They didn't seem to understand the concept of winging it like that and staying wherever you end up that night. However, I was not denied entry, just questioned a lot. That's the difference from a few years ago to now. Heh, just yesterday my kids said that they would never go to the US, unless it was maybe to Hawaii. I guess that is off the table now too.

Interesting. Maybe this reflects what one tends to see of US tourists overseas, ie travelling in large groups with a rigidly defined itinerary of very familiar sites. In the UK that is typically London - Windsor - Stratford upon Avon - York - Edinburgh.
Although if she hadn't, we wouldn't have that lovely last photo of her, with her beautiful beaming smile that we loved so much.

She always vowed to remain in harness until her death. It's a sense of service and duty which one very rarely sees these days.
