BELLEVILLE, Ont. - The Superior Court and Hastings County building has been converted into a fortress in advance of the Thursday appearance of accused murderer Col. Russell Williams.

The public and media will only have the chance to see the former commander of CFB Trenton in the actual courtroom, thanks to sweeping security enhancements at the courthouse in preparation for Williams's first live appearance in months.

The building saw a flurry of activity Wednesday in preparation for Williams’s live Thursday appearance. Outside, a large fence draped in a thick green tarp was erected at the door where prisoners are usually escorted openly into the building. Inside, metal detectors have been set up to scan each person entering the courtrooms.

A second courtroom has been prepared specifically to handle the overflow of media and spectators who don’t get a spot in the third-floor courtroom where Williams is scheduled to appear. Closed-circuit televisions will capture the proceedings so those in the overflow room can watch.

Belleville police have stepped up security because of the high level of public interest in the case.

“We’ve increased our security quite a bit,” said Insp. Mike Graham. “We’ve had some big cases, but I’ve never seen anything garner this much publicity or this much public interest.”

Those who attend the hearing can expect to see a large contingent of police officers and anyone entering the courtrooms can expect to be “checked for any type of weapons or materials that could cause damage or hurt anybody,” he said.

Police have restricted parking along the streets adjacent to the courthouse from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday in anticipation of a fleet of media satellite trucks arriving from television news outlets.

The public is welcome to attend court, Graham said, though they may not get in and should expect to stand.

Williams, 47, is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Cpl. Marie-France Comeau and Jessica Lloyd. He also faces charges in connection with two home-invasion sex assaults Sept. 2009.

In April 2010, Williams was charged with 82 charges in connection with a series of break-and-enters in Hastings County and the Ottawa area.

Col. Williams expected to plead guilty

Col. Russell Williams, the former commander of CFB Trenton, is expected to plead guilty to all the charges facing him, including two counts of first-degree murder, sexual assault and a slew of break and enters, CBC News has learned.

But it is not clear if Williams 47, will enter a plea during his court appearance in Belleville, Ont., on Thursday.

Sources tell CBC News that negotiations are underway to determine the quality of Williams' potential sentence. He is facing life in prison and sources say he wants to work out the best deal for a life behind bars.

Williams has been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of air force flight attendant Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, 37, who worked at CFB Trenton, and Jessica Lloyd, 27, of Belleville.

He has also been charged with home-invasion sex attacks on two women in September 2009 in eastern Ontario and with 82 breaking and entering charges.

Williams was arrested Feb. 7, 2010, while he was still in command of the Trenton base.

In anticipation of massive crowds at the courthouse in Belleville, police have installed a security barricade to block the public's view of Williams' arrival and departure.

Inside the courthouse, it is also expected lawyers will discuss sealing some of the more graphic evidence against Williams, including photos of victims.

Since Williams has been in custody, his wife Mary Elizabeth Harriman has maintained contact with him and visited him several times in prison, CBC News has learned. She is said to have helped him rally after his reported suicide attempt earlier this year.

Friends say she had no idea of Williams' alleged double life.

I wonder if MEH is reading the newspaper, listening to the news etc or is she living in a nutshell and avoiding all media outlets. How could ANYONE still provide support to this monster after reading what he did in the graphic details that the journalists are supplying us.

Colonel facing murder charges due in court

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/101007/national/colonel_murder_charge

BELLEVILLE, Ont. - The former commander of a Canadian Forces base and a once rising star in the military is due in an Ontario court today to face two first-degree murder charges.

Col. Russell Williams is also charged with sex assaults and 82 other counts related to break and enters, some of which reportedly involved lingerie.

The former commander of CFB Trenton has already waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

He is charged in the deaths of Jessica Lloyd, 27, and Cpl. Marie France Comeau, 37.

Comeau was found dead in her home in Brighton, Ont., last November. She was a flight attendant at CFB Trenton and served aboard the same military VIP flights Williams piloted for much of the 1990s, ferrying the Governor General, the prime minister and other dignitaries on domestic and overseas trips.

Court documents show Williams is alleged to have burglarized Comeau's home some 10 days before she was found dead on Nov. 25. The information does not specify what was allegedly stolen.

Lloyd's body was found in Tweed, Ont., on Feb. 8, two weeks after she failed to show up at her job in Napanee, Ont.

It's alleged Williams burglarized the Tweed home of his first alleged sexual assault victim twice after the assault on Sept. 17. The court documents also show police believe he robbed the home of his second alleged assault victim twice before the Sept. 30 attack in the woman's home.

Some of the break-and-enter charges centre around the Ottawa neighbourhood where Williams once lived.

A man whose house was among those burglarized said he and his wife came home one day to find family pictures on their bed and underwear drawers of his wife and daughters left open.

One of Williams' alleged sex assault victims has also launched a $2.45-million lawsuit against Williams and his wife, Mary-Elizabeth Harriman.

The 21-year-old woman, identified only as Jane Doe, claims the "horrific and reprehensible'' alleged sexual attack has left her fearful and suicidal.

Those allegations have not been proven in court and Williams has not yet filed a statement of defence.

Williams in court
Local News
By Intelligencer Staff
Updated 32 minutes ago

Col. Russell Williams was led into court at the Hastings County building's Superior Court this morning, shortly after 7:30 a.m., to begin his trial on first degree murder.

He is to appear to enter a plea and some media reports say sources say he will plead guilty and have lawyers attempt to bargain for favourable custody arrangements in exchange for forgoing a lengthy trial.

Williams was brought to court from the Napanee Detention Centre in a police van with darkened windows, which backed into a fenced, tarped pen to keep media from capturing images of the disgraced former CFB Trenton commander being led in by handcuffs.

Wearing a dark civilian suit, Williams was brought into the court building through a back door, flanked by police officers.

It is expected that proceedings in the packed court — where security is tight and an overflow, video-equipped second courtroom has been provided for spectators — will begin at 9 a.m. with an address by the Crown.

Colonel Russell Williams to plead guilty to all charges

Timothy Appleby

Accused killer and former base commander Russell Williams will plead guilty to all the charges against him, his lawyer Michael Edelson told Superior Court Thursday morning.

Every spot in the 153-seat courtroom was taken as Mr. Edelson told presiding Superior Court Judge Mr. Justice Robert Scott that Colonel Russell Williams did not wish to contest the charges.

Williams's friend has no empathy

Clad in a dark suit, white shirt and brown shoes, Col. Williams was led into the courtroom in handcuffs. His hair was closely cropped. He displayed no emotion as Mr. Edelson announced the decision, but simply gazed at the courtroom floor.

One floor down, an overflow room was also packed and in both venues, the mood during the 15-minute hearing was electric.

Sentencing was set for Oct. 18.

No additional charges are immediately anticipated.

Sealing the evidence? Wonder why? Who and what would this really protect?

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2010/10/07/col-williams-court.html

Meanwhile, this civil case pertaining to sealing information has been put over:

http://www.intelligencer.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2789247

From the above CBC link:

"Lawyers also prepared to try to seal some of the evidence in order to protect the victims of the crimes."

The evidence being sealed would be mainly graphic post-mortem images of the victims. It protects the family from seeing these devastating pictures.

"Inside the courthouse, it is also expected lawyers will discuss sealing some of the more graphic evidence against Williams, including photos of victims."

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2010/10/07/col-williams-court.html

I can certainly understand and sympathize with this decision. If one of these poor women had been my daughter, I certainly wouldn't want to be subjected to this type of evidence.

Courthouse a fortress

The Superior Court and Hastings County building has been converted into a fortress for the appearance today of one of the most notorious prisoners in a Canadian jail today.

The only opportunity the public and media will have to view Col. Russell Williams during his court appearance will be in the actual courtroom thanks to sweeping security enhancements at the Pinnacle Street courthouse

Insp. Mike Graham of the Belleville police service said the increased security is being put in place due to the public interest in the case.

"You're seeing a larger presence of police officers and, obviously, you know how serious this case is and ... the media and public attention it's garnered. Having said that, we've increased our security quite a bit," Graham said.

He said those who attend the hearing can expect to see a large contingent of police officers and anyone entering the courtrooms being "checked for any type of weapons or materials that could cause damage or hurt anybody."

Graham said he is not aware of any specific threats being made toward Williams, however.

While there have been court cases in the city over the years that have attracted national attention none compare to the Williams case, said the veteran officer.
"Nothing this big. We've had some big cases, but I've never seen anything garner this much publicity or this much public interest," he said.
