"I stand before you, your honour, indescribably ashamed.

I know the crimes I have committed have traumatized many people.

I very deeply regret what I have done and the harm I know I have caused so many."

"I have committed despicable crimes, Your Honour," he continued, sobbing and wiping away tears.

"In the process betraying my family, my friends and colleagues and the Canadian Forces."

More sniffles.

I shall spend my life regretting that I ended two vibrant, cherished lives," William says, asking that his guilty plea and cooperation with police will show his sorrow.

Now the family is filing out of the court. It's over.

Belleville's police chief is hugging family.

And the hearing is over. The lead detective is hugging family.

He is being led out of the court.

The victim's families are standing as he is led out of court.

Two life sentences for sex killer Williams's 'despicable crimes'

Timothy Appleby and Jill Mahoney

Globe and Mail Update

Last updated Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 11:03AM EDT

Mr. Burgess said he would not request that Col. Williams be designated a dangerous offender, saying the required hearing would prolong the process and make no difference to the outcome – life in jail with scant chance of parole.

10:34 TorontoStar: Ahead of an 11 a.m. news conference at CFB Trenton, the Canadian Forces has spelled out again what it can and can't do about Russell Williams, soon to be stripped of his rank as colonel.
"Colonel Russell Williams cannot be tried by court martial," the Forces says. "To suggest this is simply wrong in law" because the crimes have been dealt with in civilian court. Another trial would be "double jeopardy."
The military can't take away his pension, either. A military pension is based on years of service and earnings "and are not affected by the type of release from the military," the Forces says.
What they can, and are, doing is:
*Kick him out of the armed forces.
*Cut off his pay and get back the salary paid to him since his arrest.
*Remove his medals.

Compliments to all on the great work covering these hearings. You did a great job.

Is there any way those of us in the US can view the Fifth Estate documentary?

Justice Robert Scott says that there is an expression often said, “Nothing surprise me anymore.” Of that adage, he says, “That has no meaning here.”

The judge suspects that long before his first crime Williams had these thoughts.

“He will forever be remembered as sado-sexual serial killer. he lived a charmed life. … his double life fooled most people. He may be best described in the biographical sense as Canada’s bright shining lie. Russell William’s fall from grace has been swift and sure. his crimes have adversely affected this country and this community, all victims alike.”

Justice Scott says his sentencing is meant also to serve as a deterrent to others.

He is also taking into account Williams’ statement to the court. “I found it to be sincere.”

“Although I would be less inclined to adopt the Crown’s shock and awe presention to the court, he says it demonstrated the escalation of crimes.

He asks Williams to please stand up. He does. The judge reads out the sentences:

Count 1, life imprisonment for the murder of Comeau

Count 2, life imprisonment for the murder of Lloyd, to be served concurrently

Counts 1-73, 75-78, 81-86, all property offences, 1 year on each count, to be served concurrently

Counts 73, 74, 79, 80, two sex assaults and cofinement, 10 years on each count, to be served concurrently

Police will take Williams immediately to Kingston penitentiary.

The judge also imposes a lifetime weapons prohibition, sex offender registry for life, DNA data banking orders. He imposes the $8,800 victim fines, and orders the destruction of items seized.

He lets Willams sit down. He tell him that he is eligible for parole after 25 years, “but that’s no guaraten that you will be eligable at that time.”

Betty: There were comments on the Fifth Estate site, as some of Jessica's family are in the U.S. and were unable to view. I am not sure if anyone took a recording, and uploaded onto Youtube?

A transcript of Williams exact statement to the court has emerged. Here's the text:

Your Honour. I stand before you indescribably ashamed. I know the crimes I have committed have traumatized many people. The family and friends of Marie-France Comeau and Jessica Lloyd in particular have suffered and continue to suffer profound, desperate pain and sorrow as a result of what I’ve done.

My assaults of Ms. {PUB BAN ON NAME} and Ms. Massicotte have caused them to suffer terribly as well.

Numerous victims of the break and enters I have committed have been very seriously distressed as a result of my having so invaded their most intimate privacy.

My family, your Honour, has been irreparably damaged. The understandable hatred that was expressed yesterday and that has been palpable throughout the week has me recognize that most will find it impossible to accept. But the fact is I deeply regret what I have done and the harm I know I have caused to many.

I committed despicable crime, your Honour, and in the process betraying my family, my friends and colleagues and the Canadian Forces [crying, pauses] excuse me.

I shall spend the rest of my life regretting, above all, that I ended two vibrant, innocent and cherish lives.

My very sincere hope is that my detailed confession on the night of Feb. 7, my full cooperation with investigators since, and ultimately my guilty pleas during this week have in some way, served to temper the very serious harm I have caused my victims, family and friends.

Thank-you.

First post here..
I found the this site when Jessica first went missing,, This case struck me hard as a father of a 12yr, Who lived in a rural area and my greatest fear was something like this could happen to her, also having a partner the same age as Jessica , with the same first name

I can hardly beleive this is sorta over and there is a sense of closer..
Personally i believe russ will off himself in jail once he gets comfy, He will not want to be there till he dies naturally..

I really hope is isnt held anywhere near paul benardo in KP, couldnt fathem the thought of them sharing stories..
From what i had heard, (being close to some guards at Kingston Pen) there was atleast 1 major attempt on pauls life and was saved by a fast thinking guard, there was no injuires he just controlled the situation.. Im sure the cons are ready and waiting for him, Its been publish that there was a good chance he was going to KP and they were making room for Russ. I really hope he gets a taste of his of medicine (as cold as that may seem)

Personally i really hoped they would trash the edivence and keep transcripts..
Id really hate for the families sake, the photos and videos to get released on the internet in the distant future.

This is my .2cents worth

You should be able to view it online. Here is the link:

(this is before he was actually sentenced). They are doing a follow-up this Friday and it will likely be available online after the show airs.
