That was a very well-written & informative article IMO. I live in Winnipeg and didn't know Russell and his wife married at the Art Gallery!

I wonder if Williams spared Laurie Massicotte's life because she has children?

This is sickening:

Two days later, Nov. 30, Williams was back in front of the computer (now at the cottage during the construction), uploading his new video footage. He labeled the ?le “MFC.mov”—Marie-France Comeau.

The Westboro townhouse was finally finished in early December 2009, and whether it was the hours spent unpacking or the realization that he was now a killer, Williams the predator went dormant for two months, his longest break in nearly two years. When he did decide to strike again—on Jan. 28, 2010, at the rural Belleville home of Jessica Lloyd—his wife was once again a safe distance away.

He used the same Hi-8 videotapes to capture his attack on Lloyd, recording over the footage of Comeau. And again, he brought along his Sony digital camera, snapping an astounding 325 photos. His BlackBerry was never far away, either. After abducting Lloyd and driving her to his cottage, Williams emailed a subordinate, claiming he had the flu—and that no one should tell Mary-Liz if she phoned the office, which she often did.

Williams promised Lloyd she would survive as long she obeyed his orders, and she complied in every possible way. At one point, during an apparent seizure, the 27-year-old wept as the camera rolled. “I don’t want to die, please,” she said. “If I die will you make sure my mom knows that I love her.”

But he did find time to flip through separate Facebook pages set up to honour Comeau and search for Lloyd. He also uploaded his latest footage into two files: “JEL1of2.mov” and “JEL2of2.mov”—Jessica Elizabeth Lloyd. It wasn’t until late Tuesday night, four days after the murder, that Williams returned to Tweed and dumped her in the woods.

Insanity:

The motherlode—his two 500-gigabyte computer hard drives—were hidden in the basement ceiling. Stored Williams’s computer screen with two open browsers. Oninside, in neatly catalogued but thoroughly concealed folders, were thousands of crime-scene snapshots and both videos. One photo, taken just days before the confession, shows Williams’s computer screen with two open browsers, one is a news article discussing Lloyd’s disappearance; the other is a video clip of her assault.

Harriman will never understand the nightmare Jessica Lloyd endured inside her cottage. Or the raw desperation of Marie-France Comeau, pleading with Williams to “get out, get out.” And she is certainly not Roxanne Lloyd, forced to stare down her daughter’s killer—in a packed courtroom that did not include any trace of Mary Elizabeth Harriman. “I am tortured every time I think about the fear and horror that Jessica must have gone through the last hours of her life,” Roxane said that day on the stand. “If there was any way that I could have spared Jessica from what was done to her, I would have.”

Harriman is living a much different hell, but one no less real. A smart, successful woman who dedicated her career to prolonging the lives of others was married to a man who ended them—with unspeakable brutality. To say she has been utterly betrayed and humiliated does not begin to describe her anguish. No matter what she does, no matter how hard she tries to outrun the notoriety, she will always be his wife. Imagine the guilt. Imagine being told that after your husband videotaped his first homicide, he took you out for dinner.

Imagine realizing that his repulsive trophies were right under your nose the entire time, begging to be discovered.

Irregularities? Seems you two guys know 'something' I am not privy to. Where did you get that info from JayFriend? I have respectfully snipped the sentence about 'famous people" because IMO it doesn't apply....on their wedding day, none of them were famous.
I don't quite understand what you're asking. While Williams and his wife may well have been very much in love in the beginning, I'm guessing that they grew apart as their careers blossomed, but stayed together because divorce would be detrimental to their careers. Even though about half the marriages today end in divorce, it's still considered a failure.

Sorry JayFriend, had to re-quote you in order to separate topics. Re the sentence I have bolded, are you saying others could potentially write books about the divorce and law suits? Now that would be a very boring book, don't you think? IMO, I don't think the reason for the plea for a publication ban is to prevent someone from potentially writing a book, but that is JMHO :)
Not just the divorce and what may be revealed in the proceedings, but any other of Williams' crimes that may come to light, as well as the outcome of Jane Doe's lawsuit and other lawsuits in the offing. Appleby had to weigh the advantages of having a book that includes the conclusion of all the loose ends vs. being the first. Clearly this isn't all over because we're still talking about it here and we don't know whether the police have closed the case.

newRussell Williams divorce to stay muzzled
By Dave Seglins CBC News Posted: Apr 13, 2011 6:33 PM ET Last Updated: Apr 13, 2011 6:56 PM Ottawa judge has ruled that divorce proceedings involving serial killer Russell Williams — a former Canadian Forces colonel — and his estranged wife shall remain under a publication ban, at least for now

Partial victory for the media lawyers here:

A sweeping sealing order sought by Williams’ spouse on the divorce file is an affront to the open court principle and “goes well beyond what might be reasonable,” Judge Jennifer Mackinnon wrote in her decision.

“It would also provide anonymity and confidentiality to (Williams) who is neither seeking nor warrants that protection.”

Mackinnon’s decision means the contract would become public if — as would be likely — it becomes an exhibit in the divorce proceedings, “subject to any ruling sought from and made by the trial judge.”

Thank you Macright, dotr and Wondergirl for those artilces.

Found this other bit of info. Anyone knows if the "who can no longer be named" also applies here in WS, and if so, could we still use her initials?

<snips>
.................

The former colonel's wife, who can now no longer be named, had argued for a seal, or at least a publication ban, on her financial and medical records.

................

She also sealed sensitive portions of Williams' wife's personal medical information which had been put before court.

................

Media lawyer Richard Dearden told The Canadian Press the outlets "are pleased that the Judge has denied the request for a sweeping sealing order

but are analysing whether the various non-publication orders minimally impair freedom of the press.

from the ottawa sun article posted above

:It was a partial victory for media lawyers, who opposed the ban — Mackinnon ordered a partial publication ban and sealed certain medical records, because they were only provided to the court in an attempt to show that serious harm would result from publication of the divorce proceedings]

I've always been curious about the medical records. is this a condition suffered prior to knowing of the crimes? OR after learning of the crimes? If it's stress related, surely everyone can be sympathetic.

Just wondering, what if say- someone had a highly contagious condition like pink-eye- would the (living) victims of RW not have a right to know about said condition, as it might affect them too.Even if a victim has no direct physical contact, could not some of the "pink-eye infection" be left behind on items that have been "touched" ?

It is not too difficult to imagine just what MEH is going through even though we will thankfully never have to be in her situation. The financial part of the divorce case would not be a concern in normal cases to the public either but this situation is different because it affects the victims and their lawsuits against both RW & MEH and if there was anything underhanded done then the public does have a right to know. I just wonder what deals were done in order to obtain his confession and was this part of it and also what part does the military have in this.

I picked up A New Kind of Monster, by Appleby ... half way through. The one thing that is sticking in my head right now is that he really liked to pull pranks on people ... hide in a closet and surprise them, do things that shocked and unsettled them ... for fun. I have not read all the discussion about this case, but I'm wondering if anyone thinks there is anything in that ... in the pranks ... like a certain attitude towards others that he can toy with them, outsmart them. Then combine this with a sick attitude towards women ... and we have a very dangerous predator.

I went into my local Chapters yesterday to purchase the book..There were two left on the stands..I skimmed through it and concluded two things..there was nothing new in the book that I hadn't already read and also the image on the cover spooked me so much that I knew I would not be able to keep it on my bedside table overnight.. I quickly put it back and picked up and bought another on King George V1...quite the contrast..

I've haven't follow the case in great detail, so I find this book is a good summary of Williams. I didn't like the picture either. Removing the sleeve leaves a nice blue book cover.

I think I'll do the same thing. I bought the book too and his eyes are very spooky and cold. I think it's creepy that he was hiding in people's closets waiting to jump out. I wonder if he was hiding in the closets of some females as well and having fun with their clothes back in his university days or even earlier.

I kind of think so. We only know about his recent activities, but apparently this abnormal history started in his 20s. Hiding in people's closets as a joke and later hiding in people's houses to attack them ... there's a big similarity. He was too good at sneaking in and out of places already 2 years before he was arrested. I suspect that he learned through pranks that he could get away with a lot without getting caught.

I was kind of shocked in reading the book to learn that the attack of Marie-France was intended to end as it did. It's like he made the conscious decision to escalate, and chose the victim. It was only a matter of time until his murder victims were children.

I think his eyes are cold, distant, smug and like was said in the book ... he looks like he's looking through your eyes to the back of your head.
