And guess what? They're continuing to go up under Trump thanks to his tariffs. And the only thing he's doing about that is telling people to shut up about egg prices.

I just went to the store. 12 eggs cost $9 and 18 eggs cost $13.50. Thanks Trump
Can the USA not import Canadian eggs until the bird flu problem is resolved?

OMG! I didn’t know they were that expensive.

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed>

I think that Kamala Harris really did have a chance if only she had been given more time to establish herself as Biden's heir. What Biden did, and what the Democrats allowed until his catastrophic debate performance. was undercut her and in so doing undercut his legacy.

All this, meanwhile, has led to the point in time where Canadians are perceiving a novel invasion threat from the US.

Idk about that. Border Patrol keeps seizing illegally smuggled eggs from Canada.

Most Canadians are moderates, that value politics that are more central, and tend to be fiscally conservative but socially progressive. Of course, this is generalized and tends to flip flop between being more center-left and center-right, but it feels like the more extreme left-wing or right-wing views have only started popping up in more recent years. Canadians have long prided themselves on not having "American style" politics.

That said, most Canadians I know don't for a second think we would be given any voting rights, and that the "51st State" talk is just to sound good to Americans. Most Canadians assume that if we were annexed, we'd be given no more rights than a territory. Aka the Puerto Rico treatment.
I'd like to add that Canadians do NOT generally admire the right wing social slant of the US. The lack of universal health care and the gun culture is a hard no for most Canadians.

Notes:
We grumble about the efficiency of our health care system, but we don't have people going bankrupt because they have cancer, etc. We want people to go to the doctor if they need to, without worrying that they can't afford to go.
Regarding guns, we don't disagree that some people have valid reasons to have weapons (e.g. farmers/ranchers) but we believe in gun control and the vast majority of Canadians don't own weapons. Unfortunately illegal weapons from the US get into the hands of criminals here. (Hey, maybe we should blame the US and charge tariffs to hold them accountable!! Nah, they're friends and we should work together on that issue. j/k)
And, I would say, while the US is a 'melting pot' regarding immigrants, Canada celebrates the different cultures. Is this perfect? No. But Canada is generally more respectful of various ethnicities and religions. (Don't get me wrong, there is still racism here.)

So, our cultures don't mesh. And to have your so-called friend say that Canadians would want to join the US and would do better....again, a hard no from Canadians.
There is a MASSIVE dislike of Trump here in Canada. On both the left and the right. We do have some "Maple MAGAs" but they are a tiny minority.

ETA: typos.

Cost of groceries posted by other poster who suggested that soon we would be paying $90 for groceries that now cost $50. I posted in reply that's the inflation amount, exactly, that I've been paying for the last year under the Biden administration. Groceries that used to cost $50 are now costing us $90. Regular bi-weekly grocery shopping trips over the last year. Not new this year, and not at some future date. Happening now. Source is my grocery shopping receipts.

Supply chain impact hasn't kicked in. I'm not saying it will be $90, but it will increase because of tariffs.
When imported produce costs more and when fertilizer costs more (check out potash) then prices will go up this upcoming growing season.

I was picking up my grocery order last week and the eggs I ordered were out of stock. No biggie, they aren’t great with substitutions sometimes. So while we were in the pick up parking spot, I gave my 14 year old a $20 bill and sent him into the grocery store to grab any carton of eggs, they didn’t need to be the brand or kind I tried to order. He came back with the basic white store brand of eggs (I had ordered free range brown eggs) and a shocked look on his face. He handed me $8 and some change back and goes “mom, those eggs were all SO expensive! And most of the shelves were empty! This was the only kind they had”

Obviously it’s a combination of the bird flu AND Trumps economy. But it was a good learning lesson for my son too (in a depressing kind of way 😆)

18 eggs are $8.50 here, which is still high, but that's because eggs are hard to get due to bird flu and the millions of chickens killed in our state recently.

grocery store today: baby spinach from Canada... reasonable price. Dare* multigrain crackers... seemed to be the usual price but I do not buy them often. These products might have been here before the tariffs (BT?).

*Dare BTW, know the products are baked in Canada but they are also "from Spartanburg, SC." Not sure how that is working out.

Just to remind people....back in his first term Trump signed the current trade agreement with Canada and Mexico and he bragged about how great and fair it was.

Trump quote: "...largest, fairest and most balanced modern trade agreement ever achieved. This is a colossal victory for our farmers, energy workers, factory workers and American workers in all 50 states! "

So what's changed?

My theory is that Trump wants Canada's resources. Just like he wants Ukraine's resources.
Trump has said that he will keep tariff screws on Canada until they become the 51st state.
Them's fighting words. He's a bully.

He is willing to make Americans pay. He doesn't care. And he doesn't care about the sovereignty of other democratic nations.

And when Karoline Leavitt lied yesterday at the White House press briefing, saying that tariffs are a tax on foreigners, not Americans, then we know we can't trust the White House. She said this even as she was called out on it as she was obviously promoting a falsehood.

It's scary to see the White House willingly lie.

That would be me, mostly conservative Albertan, but Pierre has not distinguished himself since trump decided Canada is the enemy. He has lost my confidence.
Additionally, I can’t help but like Carney. When I heard him speak on Sunday it was the first glimmer of hope I’ve felt in ages. The economist in him shone through. There are moments he reminds me of…are you ready for it? … Stephen Harper.
Honestly, as an Albertan, I’m sick of the war with Ottawa. I just think, given where we are today, there are better ways.
IMO

Yes, I got the same Stephen Harper vibe. I was glad Harper lead us through the bank crisis. He was an economist and the person we needed at the time. Carney has the same feel to me as well. It doesn't matter to me that they are from different parties. I am so thankful that we don't tend to identify as one party or the other, but vote according to the party platforms and the needs of the time.

Holy Moly! I pay $5.00 CAD for 18 eggs. That would be about $3.50 USD.

JMO, but much of the increase in egg prices is due to bird flu.
However, Trump is dismantling oversight agencies as well as putting a conspiracy theorist in charge of public health. I'm guessing that they won't be concerned about bird flu and you will be able to buy cheaper bird flu infected eggs soon! Good news!!

Ironically, the US said they want to import more eggs. Do you think Canada, after being slapped in the face, will agree to export eggs to the US? I think not. We don't want to support the bully who is trying to decimate our country.

United States imports Eggs primarily from: Canada ($44.1M), Netherlands ($18.2M), United Kingdom ($17.7M), China ($5.99M), and Turkey ($4.88M).

Eggs in United States | The Observatory of Economic Complexity.

These are not huge amounts.
And now they have tariffs applied to much of them, making it more expensive for Americans.

And why would Canada agree to even sell eggs to the US, who is stomping on their throat, trying to make them a 51st state? (reminder: after Trump declared our existing trade agreement very fair and fantastic!)
