These are not huge amounts.
And now they have tariffs applied to much of them, making it more expensive for Americans.

And why would Canada agree to even sell eggs to the US, who is stomping on their throat, trying to make them a 51st state? (reminder: after Trump declared our existing trade agreement very fair and fantastic!)
as per those numbers (#160), US exports more eggs to Canada than it imports

It seems to me that everything Trump has done since taking office will benefit Putin in some way.

First, take out Russia's--at least erstwhile--most powerful enemy, the USA. Trying to keep my examples brief, but there are many others.

1. Make its citizens sick (RFK Jr, cuts to disease research)
2. Make its citizens poor (lay off thousands of people, impose tariffs that will cause prices to skyrocket)
3. Make its citizens hungry (tariffs, deporting undocumented workers in the food industry)
4. Make its citizens less secure, especially against Russia (https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/02/politics/us-cyber-operations-russia-suspend/index.html)

Second, with the weakened USA well on its way to its knees, crash the world economy with tariffs that will impoverish remaining enemies in the west, so that they will be less likely to defend Ukraine and any other country he chooses to invade, like Poland.

Change my mind.

Imagine knowing your tax dollars went to filming a Tesla (or Teslar, as Trump pronounced it) commercial.
But they are going to take down those horrible Canadians! (and Mexicans, and Greenlanders, and Panama, and now all of Europe and Australia).

JMO, but I would be disappointed as an American.

I'm not just disappointed, I'm absolutely sickened.

I'm much more stressed out now than I ever was during Covid, and we all remember how terrifying that was.

By all appearances Trump is deliberately trying to take the country down. And no one is doing diddly to stop him.

Trump's taking the country down just so he, Elon, and their oligarch friends can cash in. SAD

Agreed, but the really terrifying thing is that neither of them have encountered resistance from one of the other co-equal branches of government.

Don't forget about "turning on the tap" and wasting all that California water farmers rely on in the summer; despite the fact it couldn't even help with the California wildfires to begin with. Then there's the whole tariffs on Potash thing, and how if US farmers don't start getting it soon, it's going to be too late for strong crop growth. I really hope there's no food shortages this summer.

Supply chain impact hasn't kicked in. I'm not saying it will be $90, but it will increase because of tariffs.
When imported produce costs more and when fertilizer costs more (check out potash) then prices will go up this upcoming growing season.

Exactly.

Everyone's grocery bills increased worlwide.

That is not Biden's fault. At least I can't find a source that names Biden as the responsible party for the post-Covid-19 inflationary costs in the world.

If someone else can, I'd like to see it.

Aussie here. Im actually scared. Im hopeless at all things economics/financial but, with the stock market falling, was that on purpose so billionaires can buy them cheap? Or does the current US govt really not understand what they’re doing / have done?
Bingo!

Well, someone is making a lot of money somewhere along the line.

This is just bizarre IMO.

<snipped for focus>

I wonder how the weak Canadian dollar also plays into this. Earlier this week I sent $500 to a family member in Canada and when the payment cleared through my bank it was only $350 in U.S. dollars.
Yep, that sounds about right 350 USD = 500CAD. It's probably one reason, combined with the tariffs, that a lot of Canadians who own property in the US in states like AZ, FL will be pulling up stakes and selling. There's a definite downward trend in Florida right now where lots of snowbirds are selling their properties flooding the market. When inventory outpaces demand the market stalls. Even US snowbirds are selling their homes and returning to their home states because they can't afford them. The rapacious property insurances they now have to pay combined with huge reserve funds required to update older building after the condo that collapsed a couple of years ago killing about 100 people means lots people can't afford to live there anymore. Combined with two devastating hurricanes last September the market stalls.

And a chicken for your backyard ...
That sounds eerily like what the Republican party campaigned on in the late 1920s - just before the Depression. "A chicken in every pot."

‘Point Roberts, Wash. Supports Canada’: Small B.C. border town calls for action as economy sinks
Tuesday, two businesses in the community of just over 1,200 people told CTV News that revenue had plummeted to levels not seen since the pandemic, when the border was shut down.

“I just did my numbers for February, and I’m down 55 per cent,” said Tamra Hansen, the owner of Saltwater Café.

“I thought (it would be) 30 or 40 (per cent). I was trying to be optimistic, but it is a little more devastating than I thought.”
I feel sorry for that little town. What a situation to be in.

grocery store today: baby spinach from Canada... reasonable price. Dare* multigrain crackers... seemed to be the usual price but I do not buy them often. These products might have been here before the tariffs (BT?).
___________________________________________________________________________________
*Dare BTW, know the products are baked in Canada but they are also "from Spartanburg, SC." Not sure how that is working out.
Look for Product of Canada

"Made in Canada" while others say "Product of Canada"

Under the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, a "Product of Canada" label means at least 98 per cent of the total direct costs of producing the item were incurred in Canada. Essentially, it was made in Canada by Canadians, with negligible imported elements. If a product is 100 per cent Canadian, the label can say exactly that.
...

"Made in Canada," meanwhile, means it was more than half of the total direct costs — at least 51 per cent but less than 98.

The Competition Bureau encourages qualifying statements for that label, such as "Made in Canada with imported parts," or "Made in Canada with 60 per cent Canadian content and 40 per cent imported content."

For both labels, the product has to have undergone its "last substantial transformation" in Canada — for example, turning dough, sauce and cheese into pizza."

It's mystifying.
Are they all in a trance?

Are they incapable of forming a plan to do something?

I do worry that Walmart would reduce important benefits to employees to offset the tariff - things like removing their healthcare and paid time off.
Or they might do what I remember seeing in a Walmart in Canada a few years ago: a big bin for donations for Walmart employees at Christmas. I couldn't believe my eyes. The largest retailer in the world begging for donations for their employees. What? Why not pay them a living wage instead. Geez.

JMO, but much of the increase in egg prices is due to bird flu.
However, Trump is dismantling oversight agencies as well as putting a conspiracy theorist in charge of public health. I'm guessing that they won't be concerned about bird flu and you will be able to buy cheaper bird flu infected eggs soon! Good news!!

Ironically, the US said they want to import more eggs. Do you think Canada, after being slapped in the face, will agree to export eggs to the US? I think not. We don't want to support the bully who is trying to decimate our country.
They'd have more control over the bird flu if they treated the birds more humanely. Instead of packing them in cages like sardines where they have no life other than pumping out eggs. No wonder the flu is ravaging the industry. I would think the same thing would happen here in Canada too if it took hold here.

Bird flu is in Canada.

GAWD , the blabbermouth cannot even have a decent polite press appearance with the Taoiseach of Ireland for St. Parick's Day without touting and promoting a huge pack of lies and talking about how great he is and everything bad is the fault of prior administrations.

It is very interesting to note that he is blaming the Stock Market response to Biden. He is clearly extremely sensitive to how the market is performing and clearly knows his erratic and unaccountable statements are being blamed for the volatility.

He is a terrible person, completely full of lies and useless boasting. Blaming everyone else. Spewing nasty spit with every bombastic word.
I could not agree more.
