The plan has always been to dismantle public services to allow private industry to come in and take them over.

It's the same concept as their private prisons.

THIS, THIS, THIS

Some of his billionaire buddies club is looking at those trillion-dollar budgets for Social Security, Medicare and such and thinking, I can get big ol' slide of that TrillionDollar pie to hold in my bank.

Likewise, I wonder what the financial deal is for Musk with DOGE. Does he think he is going to be the first human Trillionaire?

I would love to hear what he is getting out of this. Meanwhile, the outlook for Tesla is not good for this year. Analysts are lowering predicted sales and share prices below a low of $235. At some point he will have a group of shareholders to answer to.

Money. Plain and simple. Musk is using DOGE to cut funding of public services so he can funnel that funding into private contracts between his companies (Tesla, Starlink, etc) and the federal government.

Additionally, companies Musk owns or controls have secured $13 billion in nearly 100 contracts with 17 federal agencies over the past five years.
One source. There are many if you dig into it.

Whilst this isn't Canada tariffs, it is still about Trump's tariffs!

"

Trump threatens EU with 200% tariffs on wines, champagnes and alcoholic products

Elsewhere, US president Donald Trump has just threatened the European Union, “one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the world,” with 200% tariffs on “all wines, champagnes and alcoholic products coming out of France and other EU represented countries.”

In a post on Truth Social, he said this would be a response to the EU’s plans to put “a nasty” 50% tariffs on US whisky.

He said the proposed US retaliation would be “great for the wine and champagne businesses in the US.”

Not sure if US consumers and drinkers will be equally excited, though."

I believe the EU tariffs were a kind of sanction on Trump because of his actions towards Nato, Europe and Ukraine - and he's just retaliated. JMO
Blocking champagne imports would be great for champagne business in the USA? Does he know what champagne is? Does he mean that blocking champagne would be great for USA sparkling wine business? Does he ever know what he's talking about, or does he assume the people he's talking to know nothing?

Yep. They want their rich tech oligarchs running the country. Pretty much Russia in the west.

A financial media corporation today has an excellent graphic about US imports from all major countries, by sector, and how these apparently randomly-generated tariff announcements are going to affect US supplies.

I found it very interesting that Ireland, which is part of the EU is a HUGE supplier of pharmaceutical immunologics, as well as more conventional pharmaceuticals - those very high-priced immune-based drugs that can be life-saving or life-extending in oncologic care, as well as the stuff that is touted all over the TV for allergies, skin diseases, intestinal inflammatory disorders and many other more niche inflammatory conditions.

One example is Keytruda, a true workhorse medication for cancer treatments, and a drug whose shortage or outrageous pricing would be awful for cancer patients of most all types, but especially breast cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancers.

The US imports $46 Billion USD worth of all types of pharmaceuticals from Ireland, alone. This particular immunologics sector is $36 Billion USD worth. This is a real concern for US healthcare with these pizz-ant tariffs. Then there are the Swiss pharmaceuticals worth $11 Billion USD, also possibly in the EU tariffs.

Couple a huge cost of these lifesaving drugs with a decrease in the payments for Medicare and Medicaid and you have a tailspin of healthcare disasters for the US population.

Hard to understand how the Taoiseach of Ireland could stomach being near the Trump, far less raise a smile during that random babbling that happened during their photo op.

They are all scared. Many know there is no wealth at the end of a destructive tunnel.

Remember it is not just tariffs. He is desimating every US Social Service. Every one is scrambling to salvage...
There are two options for USA elected politicians today. Rally together and do something, or pass bills that prevent others from doing something. That latter seems to be what's going on.

That means the decision is to do nothing and have faith that Musk will make it all better at some point in the future ... after a little financial pain for those who have no financial safety net.

Where is the Democrat Party leader today? Is there a Democrat leader? Why isn't that person standing up and speaking out at this time, or are the Democrats in agreement with this too? If Harris is the leader, it is time that she is replace since she is unable to say anything while the USA financial crisis escalates.

I have a small supply of French champagne for special occasions. I might buy a couple more bottles to reserve for the day Trump and/or Musk are removed from power.

They are, but they are kind of handcuffed in what they can do. They don't have the majority to pass things because Republicans have a majority in every branch of government and they are lock step with Trump (either because they believe him, or because they're scared to go against him as they threaten those people with Elon Musk bankrolling someone to challenge them in their primaries).

Pretty much what Dems can do now is vote no on the continuing resolution that is about to be voted on. This would effectively shut down the government, and that's going to be the Republican talking point -- "The Democrats shut down the government!!!" Kamala Harris is not a leader. She lost the election. She is no longer VP. She is just a citizen. What is expected of her? Instead of turning it into "Democrats aren't doing anything!!", ire should be directed towards all the Republicans who are voting for these resolutions to pass and enabling a non elected official (Elon Musk) to take funding away when that is something that is only to be done by Congress. They haven't even been passing laws.
DT signs an executive order, Democrats sue in court saying the order is unconstitutional, and then a judge rules whether the order can be followed or suspended. If Trump are ordered by a court to stop something and they ignore that order, then we will have a beautiful little constitutional crisis on our hands.

Champagne is by definition French. There's no such thing as USA champagne. It's called "sparkling wine" in the USA. The USA federal government is preventing people in the USA from purchasing champagne by tripling the price. Did Musk just purchase a large supply of champagne and French wines?

"The name is legally protected by European law and an 1891 treaty that requires true champagne to be produced in the Champagne region and made from the Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, or Chardonnay grapes grown in this region.

I'm curious - will tariffs create a black-market industry?

In Canada, if Trudeau or Carney was acting erratic, destroying the economy and waging wars, the opposition party leader would be all over the news telling people exactly what's going on. That's not happening in the USA. Why not?

The current GOP Congressional representatives and senators have been cautioned, if not directly instructed, to avoid having any open meetings with their constituents.

That means they will not show their faces to the people of the districts they were elected to represent, but choose to hide behind highly wordsmithed announcements meant to dispararge open discussion as dangerous and uncontrolled, run by "leftists" and such.

One such weak person is Kevin Kiley, a 2 term Congressional Representative from California's 3rd district. He has the sad honor of representing a huge amount of eastern California territory that extends to the Nevada border. It includes 5 major US National Parks: Lassen Volcano, Yosemote, Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Death Valley NP's. It contains 7 counties, and includes Lake Tahoe, Mammoth, parts of Sacramento, and 3 additional counties, that include some largely agricultural areas.

So he has a large number of constituents who are subject to the federal firings of Forest Service, BLM, National Parks, and Dept of Agriculture personnel.

Reports are that after complying with Republican edits to hide from town halls, he has now agreed to a tepid telephone version that will undoubtedly be screening calls and be refusing to answer those he doesn't care to.

This is the kind of misrepresentation that voters need to grab hold of and do a shakedown. His term expires in 2026 and the Democratic party need to find a good replacement to get this huge district away from Kiley.

Exactly! They told Republican representatives to not have any town hall meetings because Democrats are "paying people to go to these meetings and complain". It's so hard to believe that citizens may have actual complaints when you strip away every social service imagineable.

Trump keeps firing the judges responsible for decisions that favor the workers or the established legal process in these mass firings.

A current 45 day stay of firirings is on hole becaue Trump just tried to fire the judge responsible, and the judge is fighitng back.

It is, indeed, building to a Constitutional crisis that will involve the Supreme Court.

It feels a lot like the beginning of the Revolutionary War, all over again. People are laying low, keeping their powder dry, and planning the course for the inevitable.

Although Democrats have no power within the government, they have a voice. If Trump was the opposition leader, we know he would be all over the news complaining loudly. Where is the Democrat leader today and why is that person silent?

Is it. I read it every day. I see Democratic representatives do this every day. Instead of blaming the opposition why don't we blame the party that is actually enacting these things.

Is Kamala Harris still the leader of the Democrat Party?

Where is she today? What's she doing? Doesn't she have anything to say? Can the Democrat Party elect a new leader who actually cares enough to say something?

He's not. Here's an article, and they abound all over the internet.

She is not a leader of the party. She is not an elected official.

No lack of misinformation coming from the American side.

Actual sources, some direct from the White House, linked right in this thread.

He is speaking out. He wants to negotiate but the GOP will probably say no and if there is a shutdown they'll blame the Democrats. We can hope for negotiation.

THe more drama it seems the less people listen. IMO.
