The irony from a British perspective is that they could have had an Anglo-Canadian style constitutional monarchy, but they've actually ended up with Louis XIV! L'État, c'est moi.

If anyone in America can hear a whirring sound, it's the Founding Fathers spinning in their graves.

And a critic of Louis XIV made this comment, that certainly applies today:

Louis has often been criticised for his vanity. The memoirist Saint-Simon, who claimed that Louis slighted him, criticised him thus:

There was nothing he liked so much as flattery, or, to put it more plainly, adulation; the coarser and clumsier it was, the more he relished it.

Carney, Macron launch new bilteral partnership on intelligence and security

Carney and Macron discussed a new bilateral partnership on intelligence and security, focused on enhancing cybersecurity and sharing intelligence on "significant threats," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement about the conversation.

"Key topics will include economic security, violent extremism, counter-proliferation, interference, espionage, sabotage, and threats associated with advanced technologies."

The PMO said the two leaders also discussed strengthening economic ties, including on artificial intelligence, critical minerals and clean energy, as well as their intention to "defend rules-based trade."

Carney also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy late Sunday and invited him to the G7 summit this summer, which Canada is hosting.

I'd love it if Canada and Denmark would enter into a similar pact.

You know, shut down the Greenland stuff.

Under the auspice of the Northern Defence Dialogue meeting held on the margins of the NATO Defence Ministers’ Meeting on 17 October 2024, the defence ministers of Canada, Denmark together with the Foreign Minister of the Faroe Islands and a representative from Greenland, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, and representatives from Iceland and the United States reaffirm their shared commitment to enhanced collaboration on security and defence in the Arctic.

That's already in place. I suspect that it is the alliance between Canada and Nordic neighbours that has the USA government rather worked up about robbing Canadians of their country. The USA is not included in the agreement because the USA is South of Canada.

"Canada maintains close relations with its Nordic Arctic neighbours; specifically, the Kingdom of Denmark (consisting of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. These close relationships are underpinned by shared values, a common outlook on the world and a shared commitment to ensuring a peaceful and stable Arctic through the enduring success of NATO. They continue to grow stronger, with a particularly marked increase in dialogue and cooperation since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Examples of Canada’s close relationships with its Nordic Arctic neighbours include the following:
  • In 2022, Canada was the first country to ratify the accessions of Finland and Sweden to NATO.
  • In June 2023, Canada’s prime minister was the invited guest at the Nordic prime ministers’ annual meeting, in Iceland.
  • In June 2024, the Government of Canada committed up to $20 million in funding for an international research initiative on the sustainable development of the Arctic in collaboration with NordForsk, an organization under the Nordic Council of Ministers. It will support collaborative and multi-disciplinary scientific efforts and contributions from across the Arctic region and include Indigenous perspectives.
  • In September 2024, Canada’s minister of foreign affairs and the premier of Nunavut co-hosted representatives from the Kingdom of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden for the first Canada-Nordic Strategic Dialogue, in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
Working in collaboration with other federal departments, we will increase our support for bilateral and regional cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in Arctic science and technology, climate change, culture, Indigenous-to-Indigenous ties, natural resources, sustainable development through trade and infrastructure and defence and security.

We will also create a new position in one of Canada’s Nordic missions with responsibility for increasing coordination and information sharing, including on security issues, with Nordic partners."

Carney's decision to meet with France, the UK, and an at-risk region of Canadian Indigenous Peoples is impressive. Carney is reinforcing the foundation of Canada while emphasizing that Canada is unlike the USA. That's a great starting point.

There's another refreshing warning from the Canadian government to the USA president - any meeting with that president hinges on that president's ability to "show respect". If Mr Potty-Mouth wants a conversation with the new Canadian Prime Minister, he has to guarantee that he can manage his temper and profanity problems.

"We believe that fair trade that respects international rules is a good thing for everyone's prosperity," Macron said. "It's far more effective than tariffs that simply create inflation and destroy the integration of our economies and our supply chains."
...

Carney has deliberately chosen the two European capital cities that shaped Canada's early existence. During his swearing-in ceremony, he noted the country was built on the bedrock of three peoples — French, English and Indigenous — and said Canada is fundamentally different from America and will "never, ever, in any way, shape or form, be part of the United States."
...

Before returning to Ottawa on Tuesday, Carney will travel to Iqaluit to "reaffirm Canada's Arctic security and sovereignty."
...

Carney, a former central banker who turned 60 on Sunday, has said he's ready to meet with Trump if he shows respect for Canadian sovereignty. He said he doesn't plan to visit Washington at the moment but hopes to have a phone call with the president soon. His government is also reviewing the purchase of U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets in light of Trump's trade war."

Meanwhile, USA bids for work in Ontario and Toronto are being banned going forward.

"To find out, CBC Toronto combed through open data on all of the competitive contracts the city has awarded to suppliers over the last two years — worth a collective $3.2 billion.

In that time, 10 per cent of contracts for city services were secured by American-owned companies, according to the analysis. The 76 contracts are worth a total of about $210 million or six per cent of the funds Toronto doled out through competitive procurement between Dec. 6, 2022 and March 11 of this year.

Interesting that Carney invited Zelenskyy to the G7 meeting in Canada! Ukraine will have all sorts of support while Zelenskyy meets with the USA president again. There won't be any tolerance for the USA government using intimidation, rudeness, insults and humiliation with Ukraine.

It's pretty funny that the 78 year old president has a reputation for insults, rudeness, profanity, and bad temper. If the man does not feel shame and does not apologize for how he has spoken to world leaders, then he is not normal.

Trump is the low-rent NYC mobster that cheated numerous subcontractors on his huge buildings in NYC and in Atlantic City. Cheating the fellow that supplied beautiful grand pianos to the Trump Casino by claiming they were faulty. Cheating the numerous finish carpenters and electricians that do a large amount of decorative work in the casinos by claiming they were not done properly.

The owner of the piano company never recovered from the huge financial hit from this.

I recall watching a program decades ago about Trump building a huge tower in NYC. He was so awful to everyone and he said such nasty things about decent people, even all that time ago. He did not come off as a smart careful businessman. He came off as a complete horse's rear and a very untrustworthy, horrible guy to do business with. Frankly, I'm surprised his buildings haven't collapsed or falled into disrepair due to less than standard work. I do read that the Trump Tower he touts as the best is very ordinary and needs a structural and cosmetic makeover. I recall a recent fire in one of the lower apartments revealed that the building did not have a sprinkler system when built and has not been retrofitted for a fire suppression system that is up to current standard building codes.

All the while claiming he was the greatest.

Trump has always been a cheater, a chisler, a fraud, a massive liar and a complete bully.

The US tariff on Chinese auto imports is having a boomerang effect elsewhere in the world.

It's becoming noticeable that from Thailand to South Africa to Brazil, the streets are increasingly jammed with inexpensive compacts, crossovers and SUVs Imade by companies like Great Wall Motor Co., BYD Co., Chery Automobile Co. and SAIC Motor Corp.

Other countries are also beginning to show increased imports of Chinese vehicles notably Turkey and Chile. The buyers are noting that they are getting access to updated technology as seen in desirable European products, but at a significantly cheaper prices in the Chinese models.

China has been very strategic with their infrastructure programs in Africa and Asia with the road building that has given them credibility without noisy tariff or bullying threats. Once these inexpensive Chinese vehicles start filling the needs of middle class peoples, there is no way the US auto industry will be able to do anything but internal US sales. The US auto industry is quickly losing any advantage in a global market and with US consumer confidence dropping, the US auto industry may be in serious trouble thanks to him.

Interesting! And yet he was elected president twice. His supporters have had to overlook a lot of bad character to get there.

Now that president is playing with the big boys, and they will not tolerate him going mental, shouting, and using profanity to get away with robbing countries of their natural resources or the land on which they stand.

I wonder whether the USA president will chicken out and miss the G7 meeting in Kananaskis, Alberta in June. It's less than an hour from Calgary International Airport, so if he has to have another tantrum, he can quickly be sent home.

It was at the G7 meeting in 2017 where the president had a meltdown and fled the country due to anger of Canada's supply management of diary. He wanted Canada to abandon supply-demand production and let the USA control Canada's dairy industry. He is way out of line thinking he can dictate policy in other NATO countries.

"U.S. President Donald Trump says Canada will have to dismantle its supply-managed dairy system or else Americans will dramatically curtail its trading relationship — a shot across the bow at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has vocally defended the country's existing agricultural policies in the face of U.S. opposition."

But the Teslas will come out unscathed. :)

And a critic of Louis XIV made this comment, that certainly applies today:

“Qui sème le vent récolte la tempête.”
  • Translation: “He who sows the wind reaps the storm.”...
I see a bit of Mao in Trump, that concentrated obstinate one track, that lives for revenge and chaos...

There was a time when , and Mao was getting old by then, his outlook was decidedly skewed, he ordered 1 billion Chinese to each collect 10 dead flies a day.. This was calculated by the town commissar, the flies had to be lined up and a ticket was issued and then you could go about your business , ..at the same time, he had a drive for aluminium, he ordered the mothers and daughters to melt down their saucepans, and pots and woks, and the resulting metal mess was collected by a pony and dray and taken to a collection center, no one knows what happened to it.... no cooking done for weeks until pottery replacements dried on the kiln.. ..

This stuff was running along side monumental famines, and floods, and great waves of cholera and typhoid, .. ( a la RFK ) . ...
