I don't think this will end well. I question sending the wife of the VP instead of the VP. One thing I've observed about VP is he likes to change the narrative which he will probably do if his wife isn't welcomed with open arms.

Why don't we hear from Usha Vance herself? Why would she want to go to Greenland under these circumstances? Something is fishy.

We have. This video has been on the Canadian news, with attention given to false claims that the USA respects Greenland.

Canada is pivoting to new security sources and priorities, and there appears to be a strong future for opportunity within the Canadian military. For example, completing an engineering degree specializing in shipbuilding, with a future military job, looks attractive.

"Liberal Leader Mark Carney says the leak by top U.S. national security officials of plans for military strikes in Yemen — and the shifting security priorities of the Trump administration — mean "we have to look out for ourselves." "My responsibility is to plan for the worst, is to think about the most difficult evolution of the new threat environment, what it means for Canada and how do we best protect Canada," Carney said during a campaign stop in Halifax on Tuesday.
...

"What's important is how people react to those mistakes and how they tie them up," he added. "They don't deny the mistakes, but they are clear and transparent and [are] progressing them."
...

"The priorities of the United States, once closely aligned to our own, have shifted. Our sovereignty is under threat … President Trump wants to break us so America can own us," he added.
...

"We will have more defence announcements with the platform, before the platform comes out," Carney said. "So we will lay all of that out as well. We will cost our broader ... electoral platform so you can see ... how we're balancing the budget.""

Thank goodness they are going to work on our defense and security forces .

With VP Vance's aggressive and openly rude stance towards what should be American allies in Europe, this is only going to further degrade relationships between EU and US

Furthermore, the security leak that resulted in disclosure of two highly-placed US governmental officies disparaging European military and security interests, I think this Greenland bit with Usha Vance is very poorly chosen.

Of course, DJT seems to be steamrolling ahead to separate EU and Greenland from the US. This really serves best the interests of Putin in degrading NATO and breaking Europe into pieces.

This is REAL, folks. Google H.R. 1161 It was introduced to the US House of Representatives on Feb 10, 2025

H.R. 1161 — A bill to authorize the President to enter into negotiations to acquire Greenland and to rename Greenland as ‘‘Red, White, and Blueland’’; to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and in addition to the Committee on Natural Resources, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.

By Mr. CARTER of Georgia, H613 [10FE]

As far as I can tell, there are no House Bills, yet, to invade or "aquire" Canada or rename it. o_O

How long will Americans allow trump to act like this. How long will other countries allow this to go on before snapping back. It's really disgusting how they are acting now . I'm waiting to see how long before war starts between the tariffs the bullying of other countries people are getting fed up jmvho
No one outside the USA can do anything about what's going on with the USA government. The big question is: when is someone in the USA going to do something about their government?

The world is watching in horror as privacy is erased, individual rights are wiped out, due process is ridiculed as "out of control", Venezuelans are persecuted, Canadians and Europeans are detained and imprisoned without a hearing or lawyer, war plans are cheerfully debated and communicated via vulnerable text messaging systems, social infrastructure is eliminated, scientists are silenced ... it's shocking. The end result is predictable. Now is the time for people in the USA to do something. If they wait until they are the victims of their new world order, it will be far too late.

That sounds dramatic, but I don't think it's unrealistic. We've heard this week that students have fled to Canada to avoid USA government persecution. That belongs in a Sci Fi movie, not the news. There may be many more people like that who have had no opportunity to share what is happening to them.

As a US citizen who has a trip planned to an EU country later this year, I am having second thoughts for a number of reasons. I had also thought to add a week-long cruise at the end as the rates were cheaper in winter, but decided against it. Best I keep that money.

Not only concern for anti-US sentiments, but also concerned the $USD will drop against the Euro.

I have been reading on Trip Advisor that a number of EU or UK travelers are changing plans to visit the US this year because of the severe and irrational penalties and seizures being applied to arriving foreign EU and UK travelers upon arrival at US airports and land borders.

It is still very unclear as to why the German fellow was kept in a US holding cell for more than a week and deported to Germany at his own cost.
Don't cancel your trips - the problem is with the current President, not with Americans. I'm sure you don't have maga-wear...

I've heard of many, many people being turned away at borders in the past - if they suspect you are, in any way, shape or form, thinking about staying longer than you are permitted - eg you don't have a permanent address and job back home, booked accommodation, etc., they can and will refuse entry. Same if you try to get into Canada/UK without a clear plan.

But they used to be nicer about it, let you buy a plane ticket to somewhere else.

But now, says one commentator I watched - border officials are under immense pressure to get high statistics and prove they are taking a tougher stand, so some people are being thrown in jail.

This is the kind of talk that is making us crazy. They just parrot talking points that are pure fantasy. Or just deny any knowledge of it.

Greenland’s interpretation is probably correct. This administration is so arrogant they are predictable.

I wonder if Denmark can seize her passport.

Pituffik is supposedly a joint base between Denmark and the US. I'd think she'd need the approval of Danish authorities to enter it. I wonder how she got a security clearance.

IMO if this visit to Greenland happens what we see here in the US will be propaganda to support what this administration wants. I put nothing past them. They will not want us to know anything but how and why we should acquire Greenland.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but it's a low thing to send your wife to do your dirty work. Knowing JDV he'll create a mess then thump his chest and ride in on a white horse to save his damsel in distress while maga pumps their AR 15's in the air.

My very humble opinion. Please let it be wrong

Probably didn't. Just lie and say she did. Then when they won't let her in make an international hissy fit. Lie some more then move on to the next drama. It seems to be the very definition of chaos theory they are using.

It's a top priority. The EU/UK have made 3 requests of Canada/EU/UK alliance:
  • build military equipment
  • build infrastructure to get Canada's resources to accessible coasts
  • open unoccupied land for EU military training exercises
"European officials have entered into talks with Canada that aim to incorporate this country into a new defence production partnership, potentially allowing Canadian firms to bid for contracts as Europe prepares to rearm on a massive scale. ... Despite leaving the EU five years ago, Britain has made it clear it wants to join the emerging alliance.
...

"Europe is very vulnerable to energy extortion by the Trump administration," said Leuprecht. "Trump will do to Europe exactly what Putin did to Europe. How do you try to mitigate that risk? You procure your liquid natural gas from Canada."
...

But Canada also has a problem: the lack of infrastructure to get its energy to Europe. "There are no harbours. They lack the pipelines. But common investments, joint ventures of European investors and Canada could be a way out," he said."

Not only does Canada's vast terrain offer unique possibilities to train European forces, including low-level flight training that is all but impossible over Europe, it could also play an important part in Europe's rearmament.

"You've got to manufacture things, munitions, tanks and the like," said Leuprecht. "Where are you going to manufacture it?"
...

Canada can offer European military assets a relative safe haven, as well as a supply line of minerals essential for modern weapons technology."

This sounds like a good reason Trump et al want to own Greenland. I looked at your map.

Why can't we all get along! 1 Putin is enough.

Are Republicans foolish enough to vote for this? This is no longer a situation of soothing Trump's ego and keeping him happy. This is war using military force against a sovereign country.

Will the Republicans look at Greenland's wealth and decide that it is more important than respecting borders?

There is no security risk to Greenland. That is propaganda. China is no where near Greenland, Russia is not threatening Greenland. The country is protected by Canada, Denmark and the EU.

Usha Vance is traveling with her son to see the dog sled races. The USA is sponsoring the event. I don't think she can be expelled for that reason. The fracking expert who is traveling with her will be labelled "security". This appears to be an offensive to enter Greenland with aggressive objectives using legitimate methods.

All bets are off about the vote. They do quite a lot of bills that have no expectation of passing. It is more to drum up support for one issue voters. Think of it as a frivolous thing. In this climate there is so much more illegal stuff going on the only way I see it gaining traction is if Greenland "disrespects" the US or is ungrateful. They seem to like to treat countries as naughty children and their followers love it.

Based on my experience at the so called town hall last night... Yes they are. It was nothing but backing this administration's agenda. No matter how extreme. We're moving into the Golden Age you know. Just say it and it is true!

And Trump hates Canada, Denmark and the EU. Because he thinks he is King. They all lick his boots. Get his approval then go play blow up the government and insult the world.

It's hard to know. This was presented about 3 weeks after the inaugration so it might have been some MAGA sycophant ( Georgia representative) trying to curry favor with the new administration. And the Red, While and Blueland sounds like something dreamed up at a local Washington bar after many celebratory rounds, close to closing time.

But, it has been officially recorded and it's out there. Up is down with this clowncar administration.

This sounds like a good reason Trump et al want to own Greenland. I looked at your map.

Why can't we all get along! 1 Putin is enough.

The USA wants control of the Arctic shipping channel, specifically the North-west Passage (green line). The USA gov't is approaching this from two angles: Canada and Greenland. Taking Canada first means Greenland falls like a domino, taking Greenland first means blocking Canada trade routes. Canada, Denmark, Greenland, and Indigenous People have agreements regarding the area and that makes the USA really mad - because they don't have a piece of it.

Russia doesn't have to threaten the area because Russia has it's own Arctic shipping channel (red line): the Northern Sea Route. China is not threatening Arctic trade routes - that is nonsense from Trump.

"The waters of Canada’s Arctic archipelago, including the various channels comprising the Northwest Passage, are internal waters of Canada by virtue of historic title and in accordance with international law. Canada’s Arctic sovereignty encompasses land, sea and ice.
...

"In June 2022, following 5 years of intensive negotiations, the Canadian, Nunavut, Danish and Greenlandic governments agreed on a modernized single maritime boundary, from the Lincoln Sea in the north to the Labrador Sea in the south—a distance of over 3,000 kilometres—which established the longest bilateral maritime boundary in the world."

Thank you so much for this explanation and the diagram, otto.

It really puts the entire shell game of Trump's into perspective.

If anything, Canada needs to seize northern Alaska and the Bering Strait

I think Trump is very aware of the potential strength of Canada via Arctic shipping channels and abundance of natural resources necessary for military development. New alliances and export opportunities means that Canada is no longer reliant on the USA. Without Canada as a dependent trade partner and source for natural resources, the USA has to look to South America, Ukraine, and who knows where else for prosperity. Trump views people from South America as pet-eating murderers and criminals, so he wants to cripple Canada to keep it reliant on the USA ... rather than respect South America.

Trump see the potential of Canada for vast military growth and strength, and wants to block that before it happens.
