The Danes sure don’t have the power to sell it. They might like to think they do. idk

"When Denmark and Norway separated in 1814, Greenland was transferred from the Norwegian to the Danish crown. The 1953 Constitution of Denmark ended Greenland's status as a colony, integrating it fully into the Danish state."

"The Danish government retains control of citizenship, monetary policy, security policies, and foreign affairs."

I highly doubt it will do that now. It obviously needs the protection of Denmark (and NATO) at this point in time.

Greenlanders have said over and over that Greenland is not for sale.
Right, and Greenlanders are the only ones that get to decide that. Not the Danes and nothing against them. I’m sure they’re good people.

Dec 2024
Greenland again tells Trump it is not for sale

Feb 2025
Denmark PM repeats that Greenland is not for sale

March 2025
'Greenland is not for sale,' locals tell Donald Trump
Donald really needs to clean his ears out and  listen to what he's being told

Greenland can declare full independence under The Self Rule Law of 2009.

No need to be rude. It’s not a good look. imo
A sitting US president threatening allied countries with annexation on a daily basis is a great look.

Perhaps you missed it, but an election was just held in Greenland, a matter of a few days ago, and the party promoting Independence did not win a seat in the Parliament, kind of underlining the concept that is being argued, that there is no appetite in Greenland, currently, for this kind of declaration.

Greenland cannot, of it's own volition, declare itself independence, it requires the mandate of the Greenlanders, Greenland is not like the USA where a president can unilaterally declare tariffs and whatnots at whim and will. Greenland is a Parliamentary progressive community.

I believe Denmark still has to approve any self rule.

As part of the self-rule law of 2009 (section §21), Greenland can declare full independence if it wishes to pursue it, but it would have to be approved by a referendum among the Greenlandic people and the Danish parliament.

First, Greenland has to decide they want to be independent. They just had an election, and they voted no. After independence, then they can decide that they want to live in a housing compound in the USA. I doubt they are that dumb.

I do wonder, Otto, how MAGA Americans, and generally, all Americans feel about having to share these tremendous windfalls of cash that is going to float down from the sky on their heads, any moment now, Trump promised they would have more money than what they can spend , but to get it they have to share it with 40 million more Canadians and 58000 Greenlanders, as well. Which kind of cuts down the share a bit.... Americans must be a bit anxious about that, ... maybe Trump is going to absorb Mexico as well, there goes more shares to more people... worrying, yes?

MAGA's believe it, maybe a little less of late, if they are paying any kind of attention and seeing that t is absolutely off the rails and are starting to wonder, whoo and why is this Tesla billionaire all up in things.

And with all that money everyone will be buying Elon's robots to do all their work. Soon they will vacation on Mars.

They are turning on themselves now. I watched a video last night where a former "MAGA junkie" lost her govt job, said she wished she didn't vote for Trump (but she believed him, and she was fully immersed in the MAGA scene) ... and she is now getting her home egged and receiving death threats.

Another former "MAGA junkie" wouldn't reveal her identity for fear of retaliation.

It seems kind of like a gang. Once you are in, you can't leave it.

How does this work? A car part made in Canada is needed in the USA. Canada, the seller, sets the price of that part. The 25% tariff is included in the price. The USA can buy it at the set price, or not.

Is Trump now telling USA automakers to take a profit cut, sell vehicles at less than cost? Does Trump think he can tell Canadians what price to put on their products?
Does Trump understand how tariffs work? Did he just realize that the car buyer pays the tariff?

"President Donald Trump warned top automakers not to raise their prices in response to his 25 percent tariffs on imports that were announced this week, according to reports."

Cox Automotive estimates the cost of an American-made car will be $3000 higher after tariffs, and the cost of a vehicle made in Mexico or Canada will be $6,000 to $8000 more.

They also point out that currently there is a 90 day inventory of US- made vehicles. The real, hard consequences of auto tariffs may not be felt for a while as US automakers will have to decide after that if they are going to reduce production and lay off workers.

'What we think is going to happen is that Greenlanders are going to choose through self-determination to become independent of Denmark, and then we will have conversations with the people of Denmark from there,' he said.

He said the United States was no longer willing to 'pick up the tab' for Europe to keep the region safe.

I think Vance meant Greenland, not Denmark in the last part. So how will the independent Greenland repay the US for keeping them safe? By giving over whatever they have.
Keeping them safe from who?? It's the USA that they need to stay safe from. I'm pretty sure that Europe understands the new threat from the US/Russia alliance.

ETA: And Canada certainly does.
The bully is who we should be concerned about.

I think Trump believes Musk will call the first settlement on Mars Trumpville, and will have Ivanka & her <modsnip> husband developing the Imperial Trump resort and golf course.

I caught a live clip on CNN tonight (I know. CNN isn't perfect, but it's better than Faux News) where Anthony Scaramucci was interviewed. Out of the blue during a general discussion of US admin actions, he said that Mark Carney (Canadian PM) was the best leader in the West to take Trump on. (Sorry, I don't have a link as I was watching live on TV.)

But I did come across this post which supports this comment.

And look how quickly Carney got Trump to stop disparaging Canada, calling Carney the PM (not Governor) and not calling Canada the 51st state. Trump is out of his league when dealing with Carney.

What's Donald got against California??

Department of health and human services, education and agriculture - funding cuts, they've been warned and investigations being opened

Guessing California doesn't want to give in to Donald's regime

Billion dollar contract for ice breaker ships for defense of America's interests
CA has a big name democratic governor and Nancy Pelosi- an arch enemy. (As I write this, it sounds like a cartoon....) It has Hollywood and a lot of liberals.

Where, most likely now, the Greenlanders will see that independence from Denmark may not be the wisest move at this point in time, and the whole independence thing will lose momentum.. The Greenlanders are, above most other things, a pragmatic people, one has to be to live in such a challenging environment, which is why I expect them to reconsider the position, out of sheer practicality, with the blustering Vance banging on the door.

Vance can't even keep track of who he is supposed to be talking with, what would be the point of talking with Denmark AFTER selfdetermination of independence FROM Denmark , he trips over his own words, and can't keep a grip on what he's on about. Pitiful stuff, 5th rate stuff , kindergarten stuff.
he and Usha need hats too...their ears could freeze of when it is -19C
