Denmark is seeking additional support for Greenland from NATO. The USA is part of NATO. The USA says it plans to expand military presence in Greenland including naval ships and ice breakers.
The problem is that Denmark's invitation for support from NATO will result in increased military presence from USA, but USA presence is self-serving and not in cooperation with NATO. This puts Denmark and Greenland in a very difficult position, where NATO support from other countries in necessary to neutralize the presence of USA military in Greenland. Canada needs to step up.
"The State Minister reiterates that the tone is not justified between allies, but points out that it is right that security in the Arctic must be increased:
- That is why Denmark is now strengthening our efforts. With, among other things, more surveillance, new Arctic ships, long-range drones and satellite capacity. More capacities will come later. And we can strengthen security more quickly if we can get the necessary supplies, among other things, from the USA, she writes.
She also emphasizes that it is important that NATO takes on a greater role for Greenland:
- Greenland is part of NATO, and therefore there is also a need for NATO to significantly increase its presence in the Arctic. Security in the Arctic is a matter for NATO and for all Arctic allies, says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen."

"During a visit to the U.S. military base at Pituffik in the north of the Arctic island, Vance said the U.S. has no immediate plans to expand its military presence on the ground but will invest in resources including additional naval ships. He pledged respect for Greenland's sovereignty but also suggested the territory would come to see the benefit of partnering with the U.S., in remarks the Danish prime minister called unfair.
"Denmark has not kept pace and devoted the resources necessary to keep this base, to keep our troops, and in my view, to keep the people of Greenland safe from a lot of very aggressive incursions from Russia, from China and other nations," Vance said. He gave no details of the alleged incursions.

In Greenland on Friday, Vance said Russia, China and other nations are taking an "extraordinary interest" in Arctic passageways, naval routes and minerals in the region. He said the U.S. will invest more resources, including naval ships and military icebreakers that will have a greater presence in the country."
