The USA government censorship and interference in academic freedom is causing a brain-drain ... directly to Canada! Bonus!

"The U.S. has long been a dominating force in the academic world, home to many of the most highly regarded universities in the world. But Trump has begun an aggressive campaign in his second term, increasingly targeting academia and scientific organizations in a bid to cut government spending and move against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies.

Over the last few months, the administration has slashed federal funding and restricted leading institutions from communicating with international counterparts. Trump has also issued executive orders that led to many organizations, like the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, deleting scientific data sets and censoring language.

Most at risk are researchers whose work goes against the stated goals of the new administration. The Environmental Protection Agency terminated grant agreements worth $20 billion US for clean energy and climate-friendly projects earlier this month, and Canadian researchers applying to receive U.S. grant funding are now being asked to confirm that their projects contain no "DEI" elements, among other politically charged inquiries.

"Every crisis brings opportunities," he said at an event held by the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations."

"Donald Trump has said he would be willing to reduce tariffs on China to get a deal done with TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell the social media app used by 170 million Americans.

He acknowledged the role China would play in any agreement. “With respect to TikTok, and China is going to have to play a role in that, possibly in the form of an approval, maybe, and I think they’ll do that,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday. “Maybe I’ll give them a little reduction in tariffs or something to get it done,” he added.

Trump’s comment suggests the sale of TikTok’s is a priority for his administration and important enough to use tariffs as a bargaining chip with Beijing."

if i ever hear the darn word deal again other then in poker....miriam webster must be nauseous by now...jat

That's interesting. During Trump's interview with Mark Rutte, he claimed that he had, or had ordered, 48 icebreakers, and that Canada wants 16 of them. Then he went into a rant about how Canada is always ripping off the USA, so Canada has to pay for those non-existent icebreakers.

Trump's goal in the meeting was to drag NATO into Trump's plans to steal Canada from Canadians, and to steal Greenland from Greenlanders and the Kingdom of Denmark. Mark Rutte said he was not going to discuss NATO with Trump. The left Trump shouting at the wind.

Yes indeed. Another example of a Trump lie that his supporters eat right up because most cannot be bothered to educate themsleves because 'fake news' yadda yadda yadda.

Canada has it's own icebreakers. Always has. Aways will. We build them right here in Canada, by Canadians, for Canada.

Here's our new ones coming on line:
Program icebreakers

Our Naval ships are also Arctic capable (and Antarctic capable), so thanks USofA, but we don't need yours!

Want to hear what it sounds like being in an RCN vessel while cutting thrugh the ice??:

Trump can lie about and claim whatever he wants and his sycophants can continue to lap it up and believe it, but that doesn't make it true. Just more Fake News!

Comments on this article are full of sulking MAGAs parroting the claims that the US tariffs are merely a retaliation for Canada's unfair treatment. Those guys will believe anything and will support any foolish move by their leader.

This is a good example of why reading DM is not good for your mental health. It requires a substantial suspension of intelligence and your good common sense.

And look at the ones by the Dems. They’re so focused on hating everything President Trump does, that they can’t see the forest for the trees.

Denmark has spelled it out for the USA government, and the same comment applies to Canada.

The USA is welcome to buy resources from Greenland and Canada, even welcome to position strategic military in the area. There's little that the USA cannot have through negotiation with Greenland and Canada. There is no reason to threaten invasion and to overthrow NATO country governments, so why is the USA stating that it has to own Greenland and Canada?

I think the answer is obvious. The USA has to buy resources from Canada and Greenland, but the country is broke, so rather than negotiate a fair deal - which is how NATO and Democracy work, the USA wants to steal the resource rich land.

"Danish Prime MInister Helle Thorning-Schmidt says that "Greenland belongs to the Inuit and Greenlandic people" and that it is part of the "Kingdom of Denmark".
...

"I am sure that the Greenlandic people would appreciate cooperating with the Americans in Greenland, also on economic issues. So please sit down at the negotiating table," she says.
...

In the interview, Helle Thorning-Schimdt also mentions that nothing prevents the United States from becoming further militarily involved and establishing more bases in Greenland, if desired by the American side. Such an initiative, she believes, would be supported by both the Greenlandic and Danish populations.

So the irony is that there is very little that the Americans cannot have in Greenland right now without talking about taking over Greenland, says Helle Thorning-Schmidt."

i just read this article about big dutch companies who do business with the US already preparing for US regulations around DEI policy. it’s sad to see that some of these (unnamed) businesses will probably comply. i would hope businesses would take a stand.. but i guess business is business for them. and it’s saddening that this intimidation and bullying from trump seems to work in cases like this.

the article goes more in depth but i copier and translated a small part!

Dutch companies are preparing for strict US regulations on diversity, equality and inclusiveness. The reason is an executive order from President Trump. He demands that EU companies that want to do business with the US government put a stop to their diversity policies.

NOS spoke with some large companies doing business in the US and with employers' organization VNO NCW.

[…]

NOS talked about it with some of the big Dutch companies. They did not want to be named. Some companies find it difficult to determine their position.

One company says it obviously follows the laws of the country in which it operates. “But in the end, we ourselves are the ones who decide who we hire in the U.S.”

Another company says you have to bring in diversity for the quality of decisions. But the same company also says it does not rule out changing its written-down diversity goals.

Employers' organization VNO NCW confirms the view. “This certainly leads to upheaval at companies,” says a spokesman.

"It is pure intimidation," says Mijntje Luckerath, professor of corporate governance at Tilburg University. She wrote the book "Moral dilemmas in the boardroom”. The White House's anti-diversity requirement leads to such a dilemma, according to Luckerath.

"It's very easy to say you have to stand firm with your diversity and inclusion policy. But when you know that you're losing contracts as a result, it becomes a complicated matter. It's not just about money, it also affects your employees."

They cannot change the environmental laws or remove protection of the indigenous population. Trump doesn't care about the environment or people.

It's another imitation of Nazi Germany ideology.

Canadians (and all other countries) have to hold their ground, and cannot submit to any dictatorship and authoritarian rules from the USA government. Every ideological rule from the USA has to be rejected to force the understanding that Canadian values are distinct and separate from USA values. Canadians will not allow the USA to destroy our way of life.

Every country that received the threat must not give nazi ideology strength through compliance.

So far the only comments I've seen are insults towards the Canadians and Cuba
I think that most of the entire world finds most things your president is doing is reprehensible. If you don't believe me, Google it. It can't all be fake news, Donald only controls the media in the States.

That's true. The USA government has the option to negotiate a deal for resources it needs, and can place strategic military in the region. Denmark and Canada will not disagree, but the USA must respect the sovereignty of the country, and the law.

If the USA government was honourable, they would negotiate. As a corrupt government, they do not want to respect the law in other countries ... and furthermore, the USA can't afford to buy what it needs.

The USA government stance against Canada and Greenland reveals the USA as a tyrant, not a legitimate NATO government.

Once they install their military on your land, they will demand payment for their "protection".

But when Republicans spent the last four years crying and hating everything President Biden did and trying to cause an insurrection, that was perfectly acceptable, right? Why are Democrats expected to love everything Trump does but it was okay when Republicans did it? The word I’m searching for is HYPOCRISY. Or did I imagine that? They didn’t spend 4 years driveling LETS GO BRANDON?

Death threats out loud to Pence, VP at the time, even, one of their own, well most likely he was NOT one of them though, but old school republican, he sure found out. We do hate that the constitution and democracy and freedom as we knew or know it for sure, is being dismantled as promised by t. We do hate that the countries that are democracies are disgusted with our government now, not trustworthy or stable financial behavior is not being followed as previously always was for so very many years, till now. We do hate that. Gut wrenching.

I hope we find other avenues for all our trades and resources the less we have to do with the USA the better they've proven not to be trustworthy anymore and we shouldn't leave ourselves open for their nonsense. I sure don't want my grandchildren to have to deal with this chit in the future. Unfortunately the longer this drama goes on the angrier and more disgusted we get. Jmvho

What's Donald got against California??

Department of health and human services, education and agriculture - funding cuts, they've been warned and investigations being opened

Guessing California doesn't want to give in to Donald's regime

Billion dollar contract for ice breaker ships for defense of America's interests
I am confused by the White House March 28, 2025 list of ‘Ten Wins’ for this administration. The first cites the following:

“The Trump Administration directed the successful apprehension of a key MS-13 gang leader — an illegal immigrant living in Virginia and operating as one of the top three MS-13 leaders in the U.S.

IIUC it has otherwise been reported that an MS-13 leader was deported. And that deportation release was seen my some as a missed opportunity. Reference CNN online March 24, 2025 article by Evan Perez and Priscilla Alvarez entitled “‘Historical loss’: Alleged gang leader evades US justice with deportation to El Salvador”

See also The Times March 27, 2025 online article by Charlotte McDonald-Gibson and Joshua Thurston entitled ‘Trump administration arrests alleged MS-13 gang leader - It comes as Kristi Noem tours an El Salvador prison, now home to hundreds of migrants deported from the US‘. That article seems to indicate the administration at first was citing the arrest. And that charges were then later dropped.

Karen Pence isn't a Dem, but she knew how to show Trump directly what she thought of him.

And Trump will blame all those negative consequences on Biden. His base will eat it up too.

That was very apparent in those Signal messages where they included a reporter in the chat. Deliberate messaging of "Blame Biden" to the American people.

"I think messaging is going to be tough no matter what – nobody knows who the Houthis are – which is why we would need to stay focused on: 1) Biden failed ...... "
