I believe he called himself an art dealer. I don’t even want to know what kind of art he was dealing in. LOL.

He was selling his father's landscape paintings.

I'll say one more thing about NoCo and I'll leave it at that because again, do not want to cross threads/ot, but re: THIS thread and THIS suspect, I ask, can he possibly be tied to any of these incidents on these dates? Did he ever come up this way?

Here's a basic screenshot to give you guys an idea, of random shootings, 2 fatal, and window shatterings (attributed to road debris)...I think the Garden of the Gods incidents might be cut off, click on Forager's map in my signature for full view, updated map (the cop shot, oh boy, that's another story, turned out he faked it), anyway, there are specific text details you can roll over on map, layers, etc:

Eta: sigh it's probably not him, just getting my hopes up... :offtobed:

If you look at the map, and my understanding is this had been going on for some time, one would have to look at him.

By all reports he is an extradinary "loner", prefers, I would assume, to be in his trailer isolated away from the world.

The notion that he would have the "energy" or "want" to drive around shooting , for a peroid of time , IMO does not fit his mind or behavioral presentation - IMO only

Mr. Dear listened to rock music like U2. He liked to ride motorcycles. He was a jogger. He ate healthy. He lifted weights. And he was dedicated to his work. It involved striking deals with artists, mostly Southern ones, who painted Charleston street scenes, Old South plantation tableaus, magnolias, pictures of the Citadel campus. He tended to buy the rights to paintings, commission prints of 1,000 or so, and then market and sell the prints.

He was also artistically inclined, occasionally painting abstract works. He was also dedicated to his family. On the weekends, Ms. Ross said, he would ask them where they wanted to go: Shopping in Savannah? To the beach in Hilton Head? To Charleston?

“Wherever I wanted to go, he would take me,” she said.

My question to you guys is, with him being a rampage shooter, do you think he might also be the type to patiently snipe (taking pops at drivers, pedestrians and cyclists?) Or do they do just one or the other (rampage shoot vs snipe individually)? Tia.

ETA: Also FTR there have been some incidents at Garden of the Gods, shootings, bottle pop explosive things, omg remember that? The bottle pops things..

I think there is zero chance that he is connected to those highways shootings. His motives are political. The highway shootings are just random acts of violence. IMHO.

Good point about the building shootings on or about 9/12/15 in NoCO. They were the Banner Fort Collins Medical Center, the Cottonwood Plains Elementary School, and the Centura Dacono Neighborhood Health Center. We don't know much about those incidents. Bullets hit at those buildings at some point over that weekend, without anyone noticing it immediately. One photo shows two well grouped sets of three shots in a single window, suggesting someone with experience and an automatic rifle - an "AK47 style" weapon, as some articles have described Deer's weapon. Here's how they map. The orange stars are the building attacks, the red teardrop is for the Planned Parenthood attack, and the little house is for Dear's home in Hartsel.

Interesting
suggesting someone with experience and an automatic rifle

I did get not the notion (just me) that this guy was a skilled shoooter. I visualized him just pointing and pulling. He had what 5 hours -- if we were dealing with a skild shooter i think we might have more fatalties , from his point of view (want) I would think the "injured" were one he was trying to "kill" your with me.

In addition this eye witness report struck me signfigantly --

The gunman "seemed calm, but crazy," she added, describing the man in a hunter's jacket and hat as "mumbling and ranting while he was shooting."

This description i often what someone who is psycotic or schzonphrnic is "like". They are flat emotionially, burst out utterances, make little sense often.

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...r-planned-parenthood-colorado-springs-n470431

The descipter mumbling was used in several reports.

as a mumbling lone gunman fired at random during his five-hour rampage.

No worries, I am not diagnosing! I am suggusting similarties only!

I think a lot of media think one is only sick and suffering if they are running around screaming at trees and the sky! most mentally ill are not violent, and are catatonic (unresponsive stupor.)more often than aggresssive.....

I think his mug shot could easily be described as being in an unresponsive stupor. !!!!

Have we learned yet what specific types of explosives were in his car? Tia.

Also, were they the propane tanks like the BBQ grill small propane tanks?

I believe he was shooting at propane tanks left in the parking lot. I haven’t heard about any other explosives.

This article from the Asheville Citizen Times has quite a bit of information from neighbors during his time in Swannanoa and Black Mountain, North Carolina. It seems to be the original source for information by others such as USA Today. Also, some additional info about South Carolina.

Suspected Planned Parenthood gunman unmoored in WNC

SWANNANOA - “Flitting without an anchor between two remote wooded properties in the mountains, Robert Lewis Dear Jr. kept as far from neighbors as his own actions kept them at bay.

Dear, the accused gunman in a shooting spree at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic that killed three people, owns an abandoned and trash-strewn trailer property on a wooded lot off a pastoral road here. A neighbor said one trip in the car with Dear spooked him so much he turned down an offer to do labor at Dear's other mountaintop shack in Black Mountain.”

Its good long article with lots of info and some photos.

"He was kind of a peculiar person," Hood added.

Not the word I might use, but sure.

The state of Colorado does have real winters.
Different areas of Colorado equal different results at times.
The mountains can get more snow than other areas that are not as high in elevation.
I am not a Native, but I got here as fast as I could! :)
I have lived here over 30 years now.
I lived through the blizzard of '97 and '03, too. So yeah, we do get snow here in Colorado Springs,
but we also get a nice mild winter compared to other places.
Another reason to highlight the love of Colorado Springs. :)
IMOO.

I agree with Colorado having real winters. I lived in Denver for 25 years and hated the winters. Think nine months of winter, with close to 60 inches of snow a year, and I don’t care if it is sunny when the temperature is -5°F.:coldout:

That sounds more like what I thought and what CARIIS was talking about. Personally I love a harsh winter. :)

It must've gotten cold in that trailer.

Hating Obama and Planned Parenthood is probably pretty common these days. And most of the people who hate those things aren't going to go around killing people.

We will never be inside this guy's head. But he's clearly messed up. Normal people don't kill others (except maybe in self-defense and whatnot.) This guy has problems. Some people are just killers. Sad, but true.

I don't feel the need to blame politics or gun laws or problems with our mental health system. I think in most cases...little can be done for the types of people who will do these evil things.

BBM. I agree with your comments. Great post!

I hope this response does not get deleted because I think it's key to understanding incidents like these.

I believe that the people who decide engage in shootings and other acts of violence in this way - actually do - think that they are engaging in an act of "self defense. "That is, they may not feel that they are defending them self but they do feel that they are defending others.

His words were "No more body parts." That speaks directly to his intent to defend against that practice.

Rationally thinking / "normal" people tend to keep those impulses and inclinations in check. While, obviously some people like Mr. Dear, can't.

Personally, I'm sad they took this horrible man alive. I wish he had been killed in the shootout with police.
