Well, sorry, I don't read it that way. Things can be misquoted or misinterpreted by the media and often is. I certainly don't 'read' Dad as knowing that his son is dead just because he used past tense.
What I find amusing... and I am not picking on you so please don't take it that way.... but you used incorrect verb tense in your own post, "have saw" instead of "have seen" and "have did" rather than "have done." It seems to me that if one is going to be critical of a distraught parent's choice of words, then one should be careful to use proper grammar themselves.
Just saying.
Ouch! "I'm not picking on you?" I'm not sure how else she could take it.
I think the past tense is troubling somewhat, but even more troubling is the general lack of pleading...."Dylan, please come home! We miss you. If you are ok just call me...or call you mom or brother. We are trying to find you and we won't stop!" The statement just seems "final." I'm not sure how else to define it. But the statement itself is the least troubling of clues, imo. There are many more pertinent ones that concern me.
