Thanks for that information. It was surprising to me, actually, how low the percentage of stranger abductions is.

Of course, we should also keep in mind the many who still remain missing whose abductors are not known. I wish there was a way to factor those numbers in also. Like, how many "unsolveds" are there in comparison to"resolveds"?

Thanks again. Good food for thought.

Sorry, one love, I hadn't scrolled up to read the newest posts before posting my own. I didn't mean to steal your point!

The stranger stats for teenage boys gives me pause in this case. Interesting.

Could you elaborate or point me to the right page? I haven't had enough coffee yet to focus on all the figures and details. I'd love to know what stats you're seeing.

Sure, in a nutshell, at the below link on page two it states:

https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/ojjdp/196467.pdf

Teenagers were by far the most frequent victims
of both stereotypical kidnappings and nonfamily
abductions.
Nearly half of all child victims of stereotypical kidnappings
and nonfamily abductions were sexually

assaulted by the perpetrator.

Then starting at page ten there are charts breaking down the stats. HTH.

Exactly... because there are thousands of cold cases, we don't really have statistics for those cases, until they are solved and factored in if we know who done it, etc.

I'm guessing it is a lot easier to know when a relative kidnapped a child (there are only so many relatives, only so many of them will have any kind of motive, so there's a small suspect pool.) If it's a stranger... you have a really large suspect pool and now it's like finding a needle in a haystack.

Has it been made known what MR says he did during the 4-5 hours he was home Monday waiting to hear back from Dylan?

Did he watch tv, was he on the computer, did he do laundry, wash dishes, cut firewood, take a nap, etc? The only thing I recall is that he texted Dylan. Was it more than once? And that he did not move the rumpled sheet on the sofa or clothes Dylan left.

Someone correct me if wrong, but the only thing I've heard is ER says that they have verified it.

ITA, and this could apply to any type of crime. There is simply no known connection between the suspect and victim to give LE a starting point.

Authorities say Dylan could still be found alive. Saturday marked 20 days since Dylan was last seen.

"We are looking for Dylan," said Lieutenant Ed Phippen, a La Plata County Sheriff's Office investigator. "We are not looking for Dylan in the past tense. We want to find Dylan and return him to his family."

If Dylan is alive -

who has him
where is he

that means

a family member is involved in his disappeance
an acquaintance has him
a complete stranger abducted him

Dylan has been missing 21 day, what has changed to have this LE spokesperson be so hopeful? He did not even mention a criminal investigation, etc. I also want to have Dylan found alive and well but I can't for some reason...

Thoughts?

Except, according to dads own story, he wasn't concerned for hours after he had arrived back home. So he had no reason to not tidy up during thos hours. He wasn't expecting LE.
Personally, I would not have let dirty dishes set out. Also MR would have gotten himself to eat/drink during those hours which he more than likely cleaned up too. What's one more dish?

Speaking as a man (single, no kids, younger than MR) - I would put the dish in the sink and later queue it up for the dishwasher. My understanding is that the dish was already in the sink, so I would have no reason to touch it unless I was running out of bowls/spoons and needed to wash it so I could eat.

And I don't make the bed unless someone is coming over.

As of now, we don't even know if anybody beside the father even saw this dish.

That is true. It's been a while since I read "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" but I seem to remember that the most difficult crimes were always ones involving complete strangers.

They were saying the same thing (could be found alive) about the two cousins just found dead, as I recall.

I haven't read anything which states what MR said he did, other than he tried texting Dylan and then went to his friends houses in Vallecito and then Bayfield and he wasn't there.

From the article:
Mark said he tried texting Dylan all afternoon in an area with spotty cellphone service.
When he didn't hear anything back by late afternoon, he went to Dylan's friend's house in Vallecito. That friend hadn't seen him.
Mark became alarmed and drove the 20 miles to Bayfield. Dylan's friends there hadn't seen him either. Mark called Elaine Redwine and went to the Bayfield Marshal's Office.

I had really hoped they would find some evidence, at least of the phone, yesterday. But the terrain out there is so rugged and dense. And a tossed item out the window of a vehicle, especially something with some weight to it such as a cell phone, really would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. And there appear to be so many desolute roads and laneways that run off that highway. There is no way they can all be checked. I hope all the people in the area are more vigilant when driving around those roads and check their own property thoroughly now that there has been such a large and obvious search of the area.

So we have MR going to Bayfield in the late afternoon/early evening on the Monday? When does it start getting dark there? I think it may be time to check the route between Vallecito and Bayfield...at least for possible evidence and missing items like a backpack.

It is interesting to me that MR first suggested the possibility that Dylan might have tried to make his way to Bayfield and then we later heard of the missing fishing pole and the Lake area was focused on. Which is odd because as someone has already pointed out, there seems to be a very large stream/river right across the street from where MR lives. Is there no access anywhere close where a young kid could go there and throw in a fishing rod? And there is likely no way that someone local did not travel the road between MR's home and the lake in the 45 minute span it would have taken Dylan to get to the lake and to have noticed a young boy walking along in shorts and a t-shirt on a cold morning and carrying a fishing pole. Or maybe someone did...and they offered him a lift?

But if someone did offer a ride to Dylan, whether he was out walking or hitching on the road or whether it was someone who knew that Dylan was there at the house alone, it still would be prudent to check the Vallecito to Bayfield route. I just wish they had decided to do these searches much earlier. And call in TES for assistance!

IMO, this is typical LE speak and rarely pans out. And I mean extremely rare.

Ok I am snooping around while most of you are asleep I guess (sounds creepy!)
I found this news article while looking for details about the search of MRs house:
StGeorgeUtah.com
So if you scroll down there is a photo of the day the house was searched by LE - you can click on it to enlarge, and clearly in front of the house there is a street sign - Safley Rd.

Apologies if you have all seen this and discussed it before!!

So off to maps and I get this for Safley Rd Co

I don't know how old the satellite photo is, but can any of you locate the house as photographed in the news article? It's so heavily treed I can't find it - and the road in this map at least isn't a properly sealed one.

Anyhow that is a pretty well defined stream or creek behind the Safley Rd houses isn't it? I know this was likely to be taken in Spring or Summer given all the green around, but is that waterway completely dry at this time of the year? And if there was water in it, wouldn't a boy head there to fish or throw rocks or something? My previous property had a beautiful creek running through it, and I couldn't drag my two sons away from it when they weren't at school. They have secretly never forgiven me for selling up and moving us into "town"! There is still pasture and a deep creek running about the same distance from our house as before - but apparently it's just not the same because it's not on our land (not as private or pretty either) :/

Sorry I just got myself a bit excited because of the proximity of the stream when I have only seen people discuss what a long walk it would be to get to the nearest water for fishing. I will throw in a blush here :blushing: in case I am way off base and have just embarrassed myself!

Thanks Catwhiskers...

Great photos in this StGeorgeUtah.com article!:seeya:

Another possibility, though IMO unlikely, he's somewhere listing the woods or a victim of exposure. I only suggest this because there was a case here where a lady went missing, turned out she crashed into a lake, and her car was submerged for a long time.

We have a couple of streams on our property and I have NEVER seen a fish in those...so maybe that one by his dad's house is also a dud...?

Have we ever learned the results of the tracking dogs that were brought in earlier?

If his phone records indicate he did try to text his son on Monday, but Dylan's phone didn't ping after Sunday, that sounds like a CYA maneuver to me. MOO
