Have they put out a picture of this guy's shotgun? I wonder if it had a folding stock. My assumption is that it wasn't a sawn-off shotgun since that would've almost certainly been stated by now if it was.

A shotgun wouldn't be easier to break down and conceal. AR's sold for civilian use are very user friendly because the are made like the battlefield weapons. Light weight, light recoil, super easy to take apart and snap back together by pushing 1 or 2 pins.

Since in some parts of the world it is not unusual to have child soldiers that may only be 11 or 12 years old the weapons are also designed to be used comfortably by smaller individuals and they are kept simple as complicated doesn't work well at night on the battlefield when the adrenaline is gushing.

That is also why so many women prefer them over shotguns and such.

2 pins, and not much difference in difficulty then most shotguns. He did saw it off, both ends. iirc ak's are more for child soldiers and small people, ar's are more for the bulk of body armor and web gear. jmo idk

Ah OK, then it wouldn't have been much bigger than a large frame long barrel (Dirty Harry style) revolver.

AR's are lighter than AK's (i.e. 6 lbs vs 9 lbs without add-ons). I think they are both fine for smaller people. AR's almost always have adjustable stocks too. http://www.diffen.com/difference/AK-47_vs_AR-15

Once authorities identified Alexis as the suspect in the rampage on Monday, they immediately ran his credit card to look at his past purchases. That search revealed he had rented an AR-15 rifle and then bought the Remington 870 shotgun he brought with him that morning, according to sources. On or about the same day, Alexis also bought a hacksaw from an area Home Depot, the sources said.

The gun and hacksaw purchases could show patterns of planning and speak to Alexis' state of mind, sources said.

Offering the most detailed, official account to date of Monday's massacre, FBI director James Comey told reporters Thursday that the shotgun Alexis used had both its stock and barrel partially sawed off, and he seemed to be "hunting people" with "all different backgrounds" while inside the Navy Yard building. In all, 12 people were fatally shot before Alexis was killed, himself.

Question about a sawed - off.

Does it disperse wider, or have better range?

Highly illegal, I know, but so is murder, so is mass murder. I just ask out of curiosity.

No pics of the actual gun that I have seen yet.

(And, lol at the article about planning. Yeah, even imbalanced people, via nature, ELF, or drugs, plan. We KNOW he planned in advance. But did he think he was "saving souls" or was he just angry? Will we ever know? Did he have any computer or internet activity, via computer or cell phone?)

Compared to a standard shotgun, the sawed-off shotgun has a shorter effective range, due to a lower muzzle velocity and wider spread of shot. Its reduced size makes it easier to maneuver and conceal. Powerful and compact, the weapon is especially suitable for use in small spaces. For example, military vehicle crews, and entry teams running through doorways (see entry shotgun) often use them.

It's my opinion that he did it to better conceal it in the duffel bag.

Ah, okay.

It makes sense to conceal. And it was on the news that people were shot in their actual cubicles (which freak me out anyway) not in the atrium/cafeteria. We still have to wade through all the fast reporting that was incorrect.

So, sawed-off to conceal in bag, and to hit maximum amount short range. That makes sense. I was wondering about long range, and possible false reports still. Thank you for explaining!

This story has had a short life.

Unlike other mass killings where the shooters face and name is blasted on every print and television program, this one has slowly slipped away. Ask the average citizen in six month who AA was, and the majority will not know.

On one hand it is good that the publicity has not made him a household name. However, I do find it odd, and do question, why this particular shooting has gone quite in less than a week?

These are MY ideas, opinions or thoughts.

Yes! I've been wondering the exact same thing. I really don't have a answer. One factor might be age: he was over 30 and his victims were over 50 (except one). Americans are youth-obsessed, in all things. Another possibility is there doesn't seem to be an obvious political angle to AA and his rampage.

But there does seem to be something peculiar about AA himself. It's amazing how no one cared about the guy. There were all kinds of red flags and no one paid attention. Even in death, who cares?

Looking at the tags and seeing that two are not true. false i.d. and multiple weapons are not true.

Based on this pattern of behavior, Mr. Alexis’s Navy squadron commander began a process to force him from the Navy, which would have resulted in a general discharge, one level below an honorable discharge and a status that might have prevented subsequent employment as a military contractor.

Mr. Alexis applied for an early release from the Navy, as the service sought to shrink its roster to meet budget cuts. In January 2011 he received an honorable discharge that would have allowed him to apply for re-enlistment in the future.

The OPM report, provided to the Navy, left out the gun in its description of the incident, saying Alexis deflated the man's tires in retaliation for the man putting an unknown substance in Alexis' gas tank. It was not clear Monday who was at fault for the omission.

This should bother folks.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus recommended Monday that all police reports - not just arrests or convictions - involving an individual must be included when a background check is done.

There you go, fixed. A recommendation has been made.

Is it possible that the story was 'so big' in the media at the beginning....3 shooters, 2 still missing in the city, they may attack other places; several people gaining unauthorized access, etc.. Once those things were found to be not true, the story quickly "shrunk" as it was now anticlimactic.

Of course we all know that a mass shooting that large in a supposedly 'controlled access facility' is a huge scary tragedy. Nothing could be worse for the victims, witnesses and loved ones.

Getting ready for the finale of "Breaking Bad," I watched the episode of X-Files that was written by BB creator Vince Gilligan and stars Bryan Cranston. I had never seen it before. Cranston plays a character who is experiencing severe headaches. Mulder discovers that Cranston's character is being bombarded by ELF waves from a US Navy antenna. (SPOILER ALERT: his head explodes at the end)

"My ELF weapon" was written on AA's shotgun.

If I recall correctly Vince Gilligan created a show called "The Lone Gunman," which included one episode that featured a plane flying into the World Trade Center 6 months before 9/11/01.

Creepy.

FBI releases video of "delusional" Navy Yard shooter

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI released surveillance video and photos of Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis on Wednesday and said he believed electromagnetic waves were controlling him for months before the rampage that killed 12 people.

There are no signs that Alexis, 34, was targeting anybody in the September 16 shooting at the Navy Yard in southeast Washington, said Valerie Parlave, the FBI assistant director in charge of the Washington field office.

"We have found relevant communications on his electronic media which referenced the delusional belief that he was being controlled or influenced by extremely low frequency electromagnetic waves for the past three months," Parlave told a news conference.

Surveillance video released by the FBI showed Alexis driving into a Navy Yard parking garage in a rented blue Toyota Prius shortly before 8 a.m. Carrying a backpack, he then entered the Naval Sea Systems Command building, site of the shootings, through a door.

The brief video also shows Alexis, armed with a Remington shotgun and dressed in dark clothing, walking down a stairway and corridors in a crouch with the weapon held at the ready.

Omg! DH and I are loooong time X-philes - never realized that was Bryan Cranston in that episode!

And what a weird coincidence...wonder if AA ever watched XFiles? Or if he just picked up the ELF stuff thru conspiracy-theory rumor sites on the net, etc. it probably fed right into whatever mental illness he had.

Edit - also yes, you remember correct,y about the Lone Gunmen episode. In fact, I believe it was the pilot episode. Have to say, I always loved those three characters!

FBI releases video of Navy Yard gunman stalking prey

Parlave says Alexis held a delusional belief that he was being controlled by extremely low frequency waves, or ELF waves. Alexis had written "my ELF weapon" on a shotgun he used in the rampage.
