Eliza and Henrietta Hustzi told their landlady they were planning to move from the city centre pad. A week after they were last seen Superintendent David Howieson revealed it was their landlady who called in police. She raised the alarm after she visited the property and was worried about what was inside.

Superintendent Howieson said: “In the days preceding their disappearance the sisters had indicated to the landlord that they intended to leave their tenancy. “The timescale was pretty open-ended but obviously explicit enough that the landlady felt like an enquiry needed to be made. “They carried out enquiries at the address which has led them to be concerned about the whereabouts of the sisters.

“This was specifically due to some materials and personal possessions that had been left within the address.” Police officers found one mobile left at the flat which belonged to one of the girls.
Looking more intentional now. :(

So sad :(

Enquiries found zero transactions on their bank accounts since they were last seen in the early hours of last Tuesday. And they have not made contact with any friends or relatives. The probe has found no explanation as to why the girls headed to that area at that time but it’s thought to be extremely unusual and out of character for them.

Superintendent Howieson said: “We don’t have evidence of them walking away from the river. “One of the strong theories has to be that for an unknown reason they have entered the water. But we are not ruling anything out and we are keeping an open mind.”
Investigations are ongoing to try and work out what was going on in the sister’s heads at the time. But there’s no suggestion they sought help from mental health organisations and were anything other than happy and settled.

I have a couple of theories.

1. If they were deliberately heading to the water, you wouldn't go all the way to Torry from Charlotte Street? You'd be nearer the seafront from there. You'd have to walk by the harbour to get there. You'd have to cross a bridge and a much easier entry point on the north bank. That's a long way to go and a less than convenient spot if one were deliberately planning to walk into the water.
2. To walk from Charlotte Street to the south bank of Victoria Bridge you'd have to either i) very deliberately know exactly where you're going ii) have absolutely no idea at all where you're heading.

My guess is one went in the water and the other couldn't get them out. I hope that's not the case.

"Officers found an item left at the flat which belonged to one of the girls."

What an odd thing to say. Was it a note? An apology? Bad news?

Why take only one of their c-phones, it doesn't make sense.

Whatever happened to those women, I feel sorry for them. The post-covid world for many has been cruel.

Surely everything at the flat belongs to the ladies. Agree a very strange comment

Yes, very odd wording. At first I had wondered if they had found something in the flat that indicated the ladies had made some prior attempt at self harm. However this article clearly states:
“there was nothing specific in the property to suggest they wanted to disappear or do themselves harm"

Source:

It does in some ways feel they left the flat to go somewhere to meet someone? Although I am still of the opinion that all evidence seems to point to intentionally entering the river. If it was one person, it would perhaps seem easier to understand. However I am aware of strong bonds between twins and other cases that have not been dissimilar to this.

This is quite a cryptic report. What did the landlady see when she arrived at the property which made her worry about what was inside. Did she fear the women would be found unalive in the flat ?

What materials were left? Did they leave all personal documents including their passports and bank cards?

I think she was perhaps expecting it to be empty of their possessions if moving ? If she saw a mobile phone could she think that odd? I just don’t know

The landlord does seem to be a bit more enmeshed with their lives than he should have been.

Perhaps it does come from a place of genuine concern and closeness with his tenants?

I'm perhaps also guessing that he was a landlord that lived in the same house as the 2 ladies, and knew their comings and goings and schedules.

I wonder if he was in bed when the girls left for their 2am walk? Perhaps he heard the front door shut and had wondered where they had both gone?
I have friends that came to the US from Ireland in their late teens to work as nannies while continuing their education. They had several friends that also came to the US from Ireland and a few other countries. It was not uncommon for them to rent a room/apartment from an older relative or family friend that could sort of keep an eye on them in case they needed anything since their family was so far away.

Although these sisters are much older than my friends were, I believe there are a lot of families/cultures where this still occurs. I wonder if their landlord (male or female) was someone known to the sisters’ family back in Hungary and may have had a deeper relationship with them beyond a typical landlord-tenant relationship.

I would guess regarding the cell phones, unless something was found on one of them, that one of the sisters was a diehard cell phone carrier, and the other one was known to leave it behind. I can think of several people who just don’t think about their phone that way, and are very different than others

I go back to the path they took.

And I do really struggle with the idea of how close they seemed with their family to not leave any indication behind if this were intentional. Maybe they did and that’s not being released. And certainly we see in these circumstances that happens, but it just seems unlikely to me.

“What we know is that the behaviour of the sisters in the morning on which they disappeared is very out of character.

“There was an indication from the person from whom they rent a flat who had concerns that they left the flat and indicated they intended to move.

“So inquiries were carried out at the flat, and the circumstances that were found led to concern around their whereabouts, which was then important to the police.”
