I agree the reporting around the tenancy situation is very vague and confusing. Some of the wording such as "indicated" could mean just about anything. Similarly the landlady visiting to make " inquiries " is also open to multiple interpretations. We've no idea really what was going on there or the relationship between them and the landlady. Also no idea at what stage the whole process was or indeed if they were definitely leaving.
I also think the police statement saying they found no specific items to indicate the ladies intended either to disappear or harm themselves to be a very narrow statement. I take it to mean they didn't find a suicide note or anything similar explictly stating what they intended to do. I'm not sure it tells us much beyond that tbh. To me it doesn't rule out the possibility they DID find specific items that raised grave concern, just that those items didn't provide anything in detail about specific plans and intentions. Certainly it appears the landlady knew something was wrong straightaway and the police also took that view. There were mentions of items and materials which I found a curious choice of words.
As it seems the landlady was aware they were looking to move out I don't think a few moving boxes and so on would have caused much concern. If she was worried they were going to do a runner and leave debts I'm not sure the police would have been terribly interested. Everything to me points to there being something in that property that gave immediate cause for concern. Given at least some personal effects were still in the property something must have caused the landlady to raise the alarm rather than just assuming they would be back later.
