This article says they had been saving to buy their own property.
Look, they both had minimum wage jobs. I know property prices are cheaper in Aberdeen than the south east but that is just not realistic at all. Perhaps they told their family this to sound more successful than they were, to sound positive, or it was a dream for the future.

Difficult to think they could save very much from the jobs they had. Especially after paying the rent. Wonder if they felt under pressure to tell their family they were doing well.
If they both received minimum wage and did not drink or smoke or run a car they could have enough to save each month. Working in a hotel and coffee shop the night each have had a meal provided each day.

If they planned on saving for eventually buying property in Hungary, it would be doable with minimum wage - estate prices especially in rural areas in Hungary are considerably cheaper than in Scotland

I think it would depend on whether the jobs were full or part time and what their current rent was. Don't know if anyone local on here knows what rents are like in the area? Reports are confusing as they are described as homebodies who didn't drink yet the same article had a picture of them drinking and their brother talks of them socialising with friends.

I wonder what their health was like. I assume that they would have been registered with a GP medical practice in Aberdeen. I wonder if one of them had been recently diagnosed with a medical condition. Just because someone looks fit and well, doesn’t mean they are. In one of our rental properties we have someone who is married and her husband is from Morocco. He has lived here now for over two years and he does not get NHS free, he has to pay for it.

I'd like to know what happened in their lives between the time they spoke to Mum (Saturday) and late Monday night. Also, when exactly they messaged their landlady....from the phrasing in the news reports I'm getting the impression it might have been during this period.
JMO but I'm thinking there's a trigger during that time. A big one. Those poor ladies :(

If the brother is correct and they wanted to terminate the tenancy immediately it does rather suggest a sudden change in circumstances.

Just checked properties to rent in Aberdeen. The lowest prices I can find are : one bed flat £104 per week, and two bed flat £121 per week

One thing that someone on the thread might know - i read somewhere once that it is possible to tell the difference between a phone being merely switched off or if it has been damaged in some way - like thrown in water.

Does anyone know if this is possible?
Yes, The network/phone operator will be able to tell whether the phone was deliberately switched off by pressing the power off option/button, OR whether the phone simply stopped comminicating with the base station it was 'connected' to because it was out of battery (the most likely) damaged, put out of range of any base station etc.

You sometimes see in police statements words to effect that "we know the phone was switched off at time XX" - and this is how they know any such switch off was deliberatly done by someone rather than the phone was perhaps discarded/lost in the undergrowth somewhere and simply ran out of charge.

I have just looked on right move and there are many nice looking flats in the city centre for under £600.00. a month. Some single people are paying that out of a single minimum wage job.
I cannot see why they would be part time, they are in the type of jobs where it is probably quite easy to pick up extra shifts if they wanted them.

He said the women had no financial difficulties and were saving up to buy their own property.

Mr Huszti said the sisters spoke to their mother weekly, sometimes daily, and were very close to her.

He described them as cautious women, always talking things through with each other and with their mother.
I think it’s important to add that just because he didn’t know they had any financial difficulties doesn’t mean that they didn’t have them.

A lot of people keep these things to themselves - embarrassed to confess to family members imo.

Mainly because these jobs have a tendency to be part time or on zero hours contracts. Very common, although yes its quite possible extra shifts may be available. Main point is we don't really know much on that front. Have to say rents are quite a bit cheaper than I thought they would be.

i wonder if they had been depressed for a while. it seems common for depressed people to not want to burden (as they see it) others with their troubles, mental health related or otherwise.

it also seems common for people who move to another country with the idea of a better life, to feel some pressure to not complain and make it look like everything is going well to family back home.

my feeling is maybe nothing big happened in the days before they disappeared, maybe they had been considering it for a while and finally decided to go through with it. i might be completely off, of course.

I could see this situation if they had recently moved to Scotland, but the women had been there for ten years and were settled with jobs and a group of friends.

I'm confused by the reporting.

How do 2 people enter a river with the intent of drowning and succeed?
Was there a pier they could jump off of and neither could swim?
It was freezing, the middle of the night, the river isn't a still body of water, and I have read nothing that suggests either woman knew how to swim. All it would take would be walking out of their depth.

MOO

someone correct me if i’m wrong, but i think in the cold water death from hypothermia could happen quite quickly. i think some people also do a combination of alcohol/medication and going into the water.

jmo

Is it possible they have gone off grid? I know all evidence does not support this but struggling to see this as self harm. Accident more likely but just asking the question if they could have voluntarily disappeared, perhaps with help? Did they perhaps have rent arrears? I know it sounds quite ridiculous but maybe just maybe ….
