It must have been something important for the landlady to alert the police on the same day of a disappearance without reason and more so for the police to start looking almost immediately (which lays solely with what they left behind on purpose or not). When did the police start looking? The appeal was sent out January 9th and they went missing January 7th...In the UK isn't it 24/48/72 hours at least before police start an adult missing person search unless person(s) are vulnerable and/or other mitigating circumstances.

So - we have a note, a will, keys to the flat is a possibility as @Skigh implied. Maybe locking the door then putting both keys through letterbox OR more worrying leaving the door unlocked and leaving the keys in the house. I do think the police are treading carefully here due to past cases involving MH. So a note could be the most likely explanation as to why the police seem certain on their hypothesis, for now.
What we could do with is someone from MSM interviewing the landlady and finding out exactly what it was that made her alert the police.

Most human trafficking victims in the UK are male. Also, the sisters are far over the age that sex traffickers are looking for.

Of the 16,938 potential victims referred to the NRM in 2022, 78% (13,290) were male and 21% (3,634) were female.

They might not have been the victims.
They may have been involved in some other capacity - for example hurrying to the aid of a victim in distress.
It's a long shot but if we're looking for a reason other than them going into the water deliberately, it's hard to imagine it'd be anything other than some kind of immediate crisis or rendevous which saw them leaving their home at 2am, smartly dressed (not in the puffa jackets we saw in the snow picture) and walking purposefully along a path where they hoped they couldn't be seen.
Unless, as mentioned before, they were running away from someone.

I tend to think it was a note but the police are just treading carefully. It may be why the family have said no history (that they know of) of issues etc etc.

Correct me if i am wrong but is Aberdeen not quite expensive to live, i live in the capital of Scotland and prices are high of course but i had always assumed (oil trade) etc Aberdeen to be expensive to buy property and live.

Perhaps people could hear screaming, and it might have been confirmed by audio from CCTV - if true, Superintendent was saying they were trying to get the audio from the nearest CCTV.
Where the camera (near the path entrance) is located next to the harbour, for such a wide microphone that these cameras have, it would have quite a lot of background noise, as alluded to in the presser.

I’ve not seen anything from Police to confirm nor locally to suggest they have said they heard screams on the CCTV.

The Sun often take 1+1 and get 5.. sometimes they are way off, sometimes it is correct.

It can be quite cheap in places but also has some of the most expensive areas to live outside of London. But they are specific areas.. not the whole City, which I’d say is cheaper than the likes of Edinburgh.

I would expect the Police to have advised anyone involved in the case to not be talking to the Press.
See other cases where that hindered, made online speculation worse or undermined the investigation.

I looked on right move and there were quite last few flats for £100, '000 or less in Aberdeen.

Not sure how expensive property is in Aberdeen, but the sisters brother said they had been saving up to buy their own property.

They both were working so perhaps they had been saving up for some time to put a deposit down.

I gather LE is familiar with the currents and the possible timeline along River Dee to the North Sea if they know that there's no blockages along the way that would impede that from happening?
Commercial boats in the harbour?
Just thinking out loud.
The nautical map of Aberdeen Harbour and area suggests a direct flow from the River Dee into Aberdeen Bay. However, having worked alongside the Maritime and Coastguard Agency a few years back on a similar case (different area of the UK) there are a lot of aspects to consider that influence drift patterns and it's complex modelling that will only suggest a search area rather than anything precise.

Definitely agree police are treading carefully.

Aberdeen is actually a cheaper city to rent than many others. Certainly much more so than Glasgow and Edinburgh.
There was a huge boom in flats being built over last 15-20 years, which has actually reduced prices as it’s a renters market (I say this as someone who rents out property in Aberdeen).

@ 7:23
Why then would the landlord call police if there were no signs for the sister's safety or foul play found in their apartment when the landlord entered it?
The $64,000 question remains unanswered.
It's this that makes me uneasy. It feels like they may have left unexpectedly rather than it being planned. I agree the big question is what did the landlady come across when she entered the property to make her call the police and in turn made them act so quickly. It can't have been a suicide note or similar because their comments rule that out.

My guess is when she turned up something was obviously amiss. What that was I have no idea. Part of me wonders if they were fearing for their safety for some reason.

Yes i agree everything seems rushed but also planned....strange.

On all the other missing woman in rivers recently was more a split second decision. I am sure Nicola Bulley never set out on leaving her beloved dog behind on that river that morning after dropping the kids at school. Same with Gaynor Lord. They didn't first go home otherwise they probably wouldn't have had the belongings they did leave behind and were later found....

There is however a case which this fits which is the lady who left her home and entered water - i cannot think of her name she left behind a husband and young daughter. A health carer or nurse..

Taking this with a pinch of salt also, because The Sun (and also a VERY strange article in general) but this is a curious detail I haven't seen elsewhere before:

"Officers have been unable to find any evidence they intended to harm themselves.
Cameras picked up audio that night that could be a woman screaming."

So it wasn't a person that heard screaming, but audio of screaming picked up on a camera.

I do hope the police are searching those buildings as well as the river.

The noise is mentioned in this interview posted by IzzyLizzy:

Presser from 2 days ago with a very forthcoming articulate officer whose name is not addressed in video.
Maybe our local Aberdeen posters here know who he is and more about him.
Well worth the watch if you haven't already seen this and @ 5:40 he begins answering reporter's questions about the sister's mental health, landlord co-workers, friends, etc.
They've spoken to many people and nothing seemed off about them leading up to their disappearance.

In this interview the Officer says the CCTV picks up audio as well. They have audio feed from the area around the material time, he says.

It indicates there are people and vehicles in and around the area and it’s difficult to interpret the sounds, a lot of heavy industry, it’s a busy area generally and there’s foot traffic [14:39] over the bridge in particular, so on the audio feed are a lot of noises they are trying to interpret but they don’t have any suggestion that it relates to the missing sisters, not ruling out, just something working on.

Also says the sisters had expressed in days prior ending their tenancy and the landlord carried out inquires finding no girls but “materials... um…personal possessions” that concerned the landlord.

It’s possible that they set up the revealing of their absences and their possessions as a soft discovery of the situation knowing the announcement of their intention would trigger the landlords inquires.

As opined earlier in the thread some possessions such as an inhaler or perhaps papers that would be carried routinely with a person such as a personal identification card left behind was worrisome to the landlord who may have had a close and friendly relationship with the sisters.

All imo

I think that's correct. The police seem very assured about that belief. It's very sad, these women seem to have lived low-key, self-contained lives and yet find themselves the objects of a scrutiny that is very much at odds with that.
Well, it's understandable. It's the way they've disappeared.

Maybe empty painkiller packets....

Could be anything but it was something alarming enough to warrant reporting them missing IMO.

I wonder if they had a bottle of alcohol and/ or tablets to take before entering the water. Or maybe papers or something else they did not want left in the flat.
Another possibility is that they did leave the bag on the river bank and someone picked it up,though the police have not asked the public for any information about any of the items they had with them.

Looking at the CCTV and IF they were leaving intent on entering the water why would they take a handbag/crossover bag that for me makes no sense....
Has been discussed earlier in the thread. Hypothesis could be that they were potentially carrying substances/pills/alcohol to take beforehand to 'ease' the task.
