FL - Five killed, 8 wounded in shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport, 6 Jan 2017

It was November of 2016. I posted a link earlier. Not sure when the discharge was.

Yeah, that's the other thing that gets me. Only months ago, he tells the FBI and two months later he can get a gun in an airport. Mind blowing!

You are correct! One is still inside an airport with many people. Plus baggage claim is a gathering place as many people meet their passengers in baggage claim.

A nightmare just thinking about what might happen!

Yes, I truly hope many many know this! That will mean we are not gonna start having this happen with a frequency that scares me.

I do not know why , but this way just seems much easier than "entering" the airport with a gun- which I must acknowledge makes no sense what so ever!!

I also think seeing completely out of control is bothersome access to aircraft is serious business.

Having tons of people running around out there is not a good thing to see.

It circumvents all the efforts made to keep tarmac and airliners safe to board

To me it hit me like oh great someone organized can just watch and say hey all we gotta do is you go do that (what he did) , the other one will hang out in baggage area with a bomb in his carry on and when everything goes nuts - and he has free run of a tarmac with 10 jetliners sitting around with there baggage hold door open.

No-one would notice today with all that chaos. He just goes back in and leaves and their is a bomb on some plane??

NOT TO SELF===start carrying my laptop in a backpack....

Yes, as I was listening to this unfold on the news--and heard it happened at the baggage claim, I thought he must've gotten into some sort of altercation with people on board the plane and was seeking them out for some reason. But then I read that the people in the baggage claim were from a different flight...so now I don't know. Maybe he was so angry from the flight altercation he was willing to take it out on anybody?

I was just curious. I know this may not be the case, but it wouldn't be the first time someone claimed to be hearing voices to get out of the military. Again, I'm not saying this is the case here but in my experience as a registered nurse, I know it's been done.

He wouldn't have gotten an honorable discharge though. He'd have recieved a medical discharge or a general discharge under honorable condition. Veteran here who worked at military hospitals.

Earlier reports indicated he was dced out of one service (he did two seperate gigs) because of substandard performance. It was local outlet but don't remember which one now.

So tragic.

It takes months for veterans to get appointments for mental health treatment  It's a really bad problem, and it's why we lose 20+ veterans a day to suicide.

From what I've read there have been differing opinions on what type of discharge he got. I'll see if I can find the links.

Medical discharges take forever. If he went to the FBI in November about voices, he wouldn't be out on medical discharge by now.

He told the FBI voices were telling him to fight for ISIS. He wasn't hiding it from anyone. It was the manifestation of his mental illness. His mental illness and his connection to ISIS seem to be intertwined.

Blurting out I am not Jewish does have some looseness in thought process implications.

They do that a lot , blurt something out that has no connection to what is going on around them.

He was discharged July 2016 according to this report http://nj1015.com/ft-lauderdale-airport-shooter-had-military-id-of-nj-man/

So well before he walked into the FBI. I hate to think he was discharged without care because he was presenting signs of a mental illness, but as a veteran I can't say I'm surprised if that is what happened. My only healthcare is the VA and it's not always the easiest system to get through.

In April 2010, he went to Iraq for 10 months. A spokeswoman for the Alaska Army National Guard said Santiago was in the Army Reserves before he joined the guard there in November 2014. Lt. Col. Candis Olmstead said Santiago was discharged in August for unsatisfactory performance.

It looks like he went to the FBI 3 months after discharge

DId everyone but me know you could pack guns in your suitcases?? That just blow my mind- you now have a gun inside any airport ??

How could this exact thing not have happened over and over already???

Anyone with a concealed carry permit or the idea to do so can carry a firearm as far as security check. I'm not sure why this would be an amazing revelation, being as criminals tend to take whatever weapons they feel like wherever, regardless of the law. Those carrying legally only very rarely make a headline because they are not doing anything illegal, nor are they threatening anyone. Sorry if this comes off as snarky, but it doesn't seem that a lot of the people on here are recognizing that the vast majority of gun owners and carriers in the U.S. are law abiding, good people.

His superior can say it was for unsatisfactory performance but he still could have officially gotten an honorable discharge. I wonder if "unsatisfactory performance" is code for "started acting batshit crazy"?

I feel for our veterans in need of medical care. It's a fight and some just don't have the energy to fight the complicated system. And RainCheck, thank you for your service.

here it is

served in Alaska Army National Guard

and somewhere else.

WOW it is storming here like heck!

decade-long history of military service dating back to 2007.
Lt. Col. Candis A. Olmstead said, Santiago joined the Puerto Rico National Guard when he was 17 years old. In April of 2010, he was deployed overseas, serving in Iraq for about 10 months. After his tour, Santiago joined the Army Reserves, before joining the Alaska Army National Guard in Nov. of 2014

.

During that time, Santiago was described as a traditional soldier working as a combat engineer stationed in Anchorage. According to Olmstead, less than two years after enlisting, Santiago received a general discharge from the Alaska Army National Guard in Aug. 2016 for unsatisfactory performance. Officials wouldn't confirm the details behind the discharge. He left service in Alaska as a private first class.

Is private good class indicate like high up ranking??

his mind was being controlled by the CIA and was being forced to watch videos for ISIS in Nov. 2016. He was allegedly transported to a mental health facility following the incident.

receiving psychological treatment while living in Alaska. Bryan Santiago said his family got a call in recent months from Esteban Santiago’s girlfriend alerting them to the situation.

I don't think one could get their sister to pretend like he is sick so he can use that cover up for something else. Much is slowly coming out that we are dealing with a person with serious mental problems, who has lost contact with reality in the past..

Many with PTSD can become psychotic if a certain flashback starts . He had a long haul in that environment (guns , violence, killing people etc etc ) Rougly 13 years in that setting.

(Just moo

I will bet his unsatisfactory performance is going to be related at some level to peculiar behaviors or thoughts etc just speculating, but an image of a person who is having more and more issues related to state of mind. just mo

what is a person who has been discharged from service running around playing like he was still in the military - he had a military id on him

He has had lots of contact with LE

Why do you think he would walk into the FBI and tell them he was hearing voices if he wasn't? What would be his motive to do that and then agree to commitment if it weren't true? I'm not trying to argue just wondering what your theory is.

I've known vets to wait literally for years for mental help through the VA, this could well have been a way around that.

"A 62-year-old grandfather was among the victims of the deadly Ft. Lauderdale airport shooting in Florida.

Terry Andres was one of five shot dead by 26-year-old gunman Esteban Santiago as passengers collected their baggage in the terminal on Friday.

Mr Andres, who lives at Virginia Beach, Virginia, was on vacation with his wife when he was killed."
