A French builder, thought to be one of the last people to see the British family alive, said they had arrived at the isolated car park at least an hour before they were killed.

Laurent Fillion-Robin, 38, also said there was no sign of any vehicle following their red BMW and he did not hear any shots.

This is copied from sky website.

Why wait for an hour in a layby -unless you were waiting to meet someone.
I wonder if it had something to do with the cyclist who was also killed.

I wonder if there are any hiking/ walking trails close to that parking area.

I haven't seen any reports to this effect as yet.

BIB Do you have a source for this please? Thanks

Police in Sweden were last night preparing to enter the spacious Stockholm flat owned by the 74-year-old mother-in-law in the hope of finding further clues to the mystery.
The country’s secret service has been formally approached by the French police to begin assisting with the inquiry.

Would love to know more of MIL,s background I read that she was an English teacher, they certainly sound very westernised, for an Iraqi woman in her lateish 70's she sounds very liberated.

I agree, but why bring your whole family, especially if there was something dodgy going on behind the scenes.

Maybe the cyclist was thought of as an allie(spelling?),the fathers handler or was the middle man sort of thing and not thought of as a threat?.

Maybe he thought if his family were there, less of a chance of having a major problem with who he was meeting? moo

Cordon taken down and we're expecting update from Surrey police - likely to say concerns about items found in garden shed dispelled

I think too much ado about nothing with the four year old not recognizing her grandma. She was probably shown the passport picture which could be pretty old.

Forgive me if this is already known on here:

"as reports say only one gun was used in the shooting."

The Press Association reports that the police investigation at the Hillis' house appears to be focusing on a shed or workshop at the bottom of the garden.

The BBC said neighbours told it that the workshop has a system of "elaborate electronic locks".

He says that not all properties around the Hilli family home have been evacuated, including some with adjoining gardens. This might give some indication of the scale of the device the police and bomb disposal officers believe they are dealing with.

The cordon went up at about 9am. Outside of the house, the police cordon runs about 20m in either direction on the main road on which the house is situated, Oaken Lane. They have also sealed off an approach alleyway around the house. There's a Royal Logistics Corps truck outside the house and four soldiers around the truck in discussion with police officers.

There is also mention that the nature of the "concern" is not clear. It could be an explosive, and explosive device or a potentially unstable substance. One truck with four soldiers doesn't sound like a massive threat.

Quite the development! Late for work....gotta run.

ETA: Too slow posting! As I see the cordon is already down. ;)

She would not have needed to have been shown a photo, just asked who was in the car with her.

This is on the Sky News homepage, but it does say 'reports say' after all. Even if only one gun was used, I don't believe it was the work of one person.

Witness describes the final movements of the Hilli family in the French Alps shooting

The new witness last night revealed that the family had arrived at an isolated mountain car park at least an hour before they were killed. He also said there was no sign of any other vehicle following the family, suggesting they had arranged to meet the killer or were victims of a random attack.

Laurent Fillion-Robin, 38, was doing building work on a house in Chevaline when he saw the family's red BMW approaching. He said he saw the car between 2.30pm and 3pm. The shooting was reported to police at 3.58pm by a former RAF serviceman who was cycling past.

"I saw an English car coming up the road from the village," said Mr Fillion-Robin, who has not yet been interviewed by police. "There were no other cars with it. I did not see or hear any other cars pass by that afternoon."

The house is the final property before the road climbs 3km to the car park in a national park above Lake Annecy.

Mr Fillion-Robin said: "I didn't hear any shooting. You do hear shooting from the hunters sometimes but I didn't hear anything that afternoon. Perhaps they had a silencer."

The builder, who lives in a nearby village, said it was "bizarre" for the family to have gone to the car park. "It is not the sort of place that families with young children or older people would go to," he said.

If a 4 year old girl was on holiday with a grandmother who lived in Sweden throughout the year, I do not find it at all hard to believe that she didn't really know her/her relation to her. Assuming she was her only living grandparent the concept of grandparents might be a little confused in her mind, so I don't really read too much in to the little girl's not being fully aware and coherent on the subject.

Could really be either cyclist he was meeting if that was the case, either could have been a contact really, the victim cyclist or the witness cyclist..
Also if it was a pre-arranged meet the shooters may have already been up that road and parked up.
