Have there been any other reports regarding the family they were allegedly camping with? Bizarre that it was mentioned early on but I haven't seen or heard anything else since.

I don't think she was out of the car-obviously she quickly hid under mother's skirt.
If they were having a picnic the bodies would have been found outside the car. Only 7 year old found outside the car-either only she was outside when killer approached or she tried to run away as killer started shooting.
They were there for an hour doing something. It is not said they stayed in the car the whole time. At the moment of shooting they must all have been in the car if you look at the bullet holes.

The police investigation appeared to focus on a shed or workshop at the bottom of the garden.

Major Chris Hunter, a retired British Army Counter-Terrorist Bomb Disposal Operator, said the bomb squad could have been called to the family home following the discovery of an improvised explosive device (IED).

He said the Royal Logistic Corps team would usually be called out if there was a potential terrorist threat.

But he said the squad could also have been the nearest team available.

"I imagine the police have discovered something they are unhappy with, something that is a potential improvised explosive device or an improvised explosive itself," he said.

"It could be a hazardous, dangerous or unstable substance."

But he said the item could turn out to be an everyday substance.

The bomb disposal team would either send a robot to "neutralise" a potential IED or the job could be done by an officer dressed in a special armoured suit, he added.

He said any delay in discovering the items of concern could be down to the fact that police investigating the shooting would have been looking for a "very different sort of evidence".

Alternatively, whatever they have unearthed could have been "secreted or hidden somewhere", he said.

He added: "Potentially, if they (the police) thought there was a firearm there and it was booby-trapped, then they would call the bomb squad to investigate it further."

Surrey Police have this afternoon confirmed that items found at murdered Saad Al-Hilli's house were not hazardous.

A bomb disposal unit was called to the scene to assess the situation after items were found in a search of garden outbuildings at the home in Oaken Lane, Claygate.

The road was cordoned off and homes evacuated at about 9.30am

The items were found on the third day of French investigators examining the Al-Hilli family home.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: "The extension to the cordon has now been lifted and residents who were evacuated earlier as a precaution are now being allowed to return to their homes.

A cordon around the house and gardens will remain in place as the search of the property continues following the deaths of four people in southern France."

I do not think they were actually camping with the other family. From how it was reported I thought it was just a family they met at the campsite.

What's the difference between automatic and semi automatic pistols?

As previous posters have mentioned, even certain (not all) assassins have morals when it comes to children, maybe the 7 year old was accidentally hit, but pulled out of the car, her head damage could be from being bashed on the steering wheel or door (especially if the killer went for the wrong side of the car - it being a British RHD). If they had been there for a while, travel sickness on the 7yo's part would not be an issue. We don't know exactly where she was found in relation to the position of the vehicle.

Yesterdays newspaper reports stated that the suspected gun used had rounds of 7, 10 or 20 bullets - and then ran out of ammunition......25 casings found, unless could have embedded in the hillside. There is no common denominator - has the gun been used before - is there another body they have not yet found?

Going back a few posts, to have the engine still running would have meant the car was in neutral gear, being shot mid escape would have resulted in the car stalling - automatics are only a tiny % of UK vehicles.

Has anyone done a check on the Reg No to find out if it was an Automatic or Manual?

Apologies if the above is a bit disconnected, but have been thinking random possibilities/thoughts all day at work.

A semi-automatic fires one round per trigger pull; a fully automatic pistol fires multiple rounds as long as you're squeezing down on the trigger.

Girl who witnessed French Alps shooting spree speaks to police

A seven-year-old school girl whose parents were murdered in a shooting spree during a family holiday in the French Alps has spoken to police.

Zainab al-Hilli was shot and so brutally beaten during the attack that doctors placed her in a medically induced coma.

She has since regained consciousness and was able to hold a brief discussion with officers in France, sources close to the investigation have said.

Good news that she is awake and speaking

7.65 is an unusual size, and as the articles mention, it was used in much older guns, from the WWII era. If you search "7.65" on gunbroker.com, the listings are mostly vintage guns for collectors.

However! There is *one* unusual gun that uses that size, it's called a Scorpion. It has been made since 1959, but you can still buy a brand new one today. It has high capacity magazines that are easily replaceable (just a few seconds).

Here's a brand-new modern Scorpion (semi auto) for sale:

This video shows the process of loading and firing (this one is full auto):

Note: I'm not an expert, and I'm just guessing. It could have been an older 7.65 gun, and the shooter reloaded twice (just a few seconds each time).

If it was an older weapon i would then think amatuer to semi amatuer shooter.

And to be honest getting a gun isnt overly difficult, you can actually buy them on the net,the guns are stripped down and the parts made to look like something different and then the seller will send the parts in the post over the space of a week or 2 in multiple packages.
The site you can buy these on is very similar to legitimate online sites in that they have a rating system etc..payment is not cash or paypal etc,its actually electronic coin..

Paul, I asked my son, an expert, about this case and this is what he came up with:

The commercial version of the cz 83 is available chambered in 7.65 with 15 round magazines…

I believe that it will likely be one of the CZ model pistols – likely the cz82

Cz82/83 (12rd mag) 15 rd mags are available too

cz40/70 (8 rd mag)

The 12 round version would also have an additional round allready in the chamber=25 rounds.

I really feel for these children, who will have to answer so many questions before they are allowed to take in the reality that they have lost their parents.

.................................................................................

Thanks to Niteowl for stating that a certain model of the gun would have had 25 shots as a full 2 loads, if this is the right model, it makes sense that the whole lot were used up in that car park, and there is not an additional gruesome find, not yet discovered in the forest.

So does that road dead end or carry on?.

Sorry if this is a bit late but according to Mark Williams Thomas (ahem) the road carries on and is traversable by car. ~6:18 into the interview

True. I doubt she remembers very much though.

What I meant was that, hopefully, it sounds like she hasn't suffered brain damage as a result of her ordeal.
