Is this the same NYT video from some months ago? If so, that might explain why some of the chronology (and truck movement) is wrong, as a fair amount of info & video has been released since, including the body cams.

The article is dated May 16, 2020.

I agree that this interpretation is very possible.

If there is no proof of prior coordination with the McMichaels to forcibly confront a specific "trespasser", I think the case for murder charges against WRB is weak. There seems to be a ready defense of:

- My unsophisticated client knew that GM was a retired police officer and heard that a current police officer had "redeputized" him.

- My client made a bad judgement in good faith by presuming that GM had lawful arrest authority and was making a lawful arrest. He then impulsively assisted GM to make the arrest.

- My client was not armed. He immediately ended his assistance when things did not look right.

- My client did not kill anybody, and had absolutely no knowledge that GM was predisposed to unlawfully confront the victim. My client did not encourage the use of force either directly or indirectly.

- In fact, my uhmm.... "shocked and appalled" client immediately turned his video over to the police for review- again, in good faith ( the fact that WRB was not appalled cant be proven).

I understand what you're saying, that you believe the case against WRB would be stronger if prior coordination with the MMs could be proven.

Leaving aside whether or not the State has any such evidence that can be produced at trial, what was argued at the preliminary hearing gives clues about what WRB's defense might be.

To convict WRB of felony murder, what the State must first prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, is that WRB is guilty of the felony of falsely imprisoning AA.

GA's legal definition of false imprisonment: it's when one "arrests, confines, or detains (a person) without legal authority."

The question at trial, then, is whether or not the actions WRB took that day to "block" AA (his own words) meet the legal definition of false imprisonment.

Several of the (implicit) arguments made during the preliminary hearing that WRB's actions didn't meet the legal standard for false imprisonment are similar to yours.

Primary argument made at hearing: That there was *not* any coordination between the MMs and WRB. WRB saw a pursuit and joined in, but did *not* coordinate with the MMs about where to try to confront AA again off of Burford (after the MMs left Buford and circled around on Zellwood).

It's pretty clear what WRB's attorney would also like to argue at trial. And that is, the nature of (and perhaps reason for) WRB's pursuit of AA changed after his initial attempts to block AA in, when AA supposedly "attacked" WRB's truck and tried to force open the driver door, perhaps (most egregious accusation) in an attempt to carjack WRB's truck.

Bottom line is that if the jury believes what WRB did that day constituted false imprisonment, whatever his intent or motivations, then WRB is also guilty of felony murder, because AA was killed during the commission of the felony of false imprisonment.

Police video shows Ahmaud Arbery 'breathing' when officers arrive | firstcoastnews.com

Can you imagine, the suffering? :( The fact that this young man lay there dying after running and then fighting for his life for several minutes with nary an attempt at offering aid, never any urgent calls for an ambulance, nothing but the voices of the men responsible and law enforcement officers as they vilified the dying young man within his earshot. Just so upsetting. several minutes of terror, then excruciating pain, then to lay there with others, including LOEs, walking around you and discussing you as if you were less than a dog.

Personally, I hope his family gets millions.

Agreed on the compensation to Mr. Arbery's family.

I am aghast that no one rendered aid and he lay there bleeding out with no humanity or comfort. Your paragraph says it all so well.

The officers involved should be disciplined as well. Ugh, I would never be able to move on if I were in his family.

Oh, disgusting. Control him in death as they tried to in life. Remove his face. Vilify him to protect themselves from the consequences of their choices. Racism, DV - same underlying playbook, IMO.
They should not want their own blank and stupid fat faces displayed anywhere.

@sds71 - just wondering if there might be a "next" court date set yet? Last one was on 11/13/20.

TIA! :)

@sds71 For future reference and helping you and @Niner in the future - before you posted I went to Trial Calendars | Glynn County, GA - Official Website to check out , but the "criminal non jury trial calendar" doesn't link to anywhere and I can't even search on so I couldn't help out.

Does anyone have a link to share that gives the next dates that is either searchable or has information more than this link, which has absolutely nothing for ANY cases/status conference?

TIA

Gang chases man down, corners him, shoots him.
He is a victim.

He was much much worse than a victim. He was prey.

When I first heard about the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, I immediately started following his thread here. As a long time member, I knew this would be the place for accurate information and thoughtful, productive discussion. I was shocked, in those early days, to read posts by a few individuals that attempted to defend the actions of these men. Rather than dredge up the ridiculous and often hateful comments, that I’m sure many here found as reprehensible as I did, I’ll just say I was sickened by those posts that were intended to blame the victim for his own murder. I had to stop reading and step away or be forced to learn to live with high blood pressure or permanent banishment from Websleuths or both. All this to say thank you to the posters who were able to suck it up, use logic and persistence to neutralize the haters and stay with it.

Now that these men have retained counsel, their disgusting thoughts and words will be dredged up over and over again to justify murder. The judge better be denying these ridiculous motions. I’m so sorry for Ahmaud Arbery’s family, who in the midst of their heartbreak, have to listen to those vulgarities. I hope they know that the majority of decent people in this country are as shocked and sickened by these men as they are.

Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt, who represents Ahmaud Arbery’s family, said its obvious that Arbery was the victim of a violent crime.

“If the only thing these attorneys can offer in defense is, ‘Well, terms like 'victim' are prejudicial,’ it smacks of desperation,” Merritt said.

The motion goes on to say using terms like “victim” shifts the focus to the accused rather than remain on the proof of every element of the crimes charged.

Merritt said he expects the attorneys to defend their clients zealously, but is surprised.

“The continued goal of dehumanizing Ahmaud Arbery doesn’t seem like it’s been successful in the past," Merritt explained. "I don’t imagine it’s a successful strategy for court."

No date for a trial has been set.

Arbery murder suspect requests release due to high blood pressure | firstcoastnews.com

Jan. 12, 2021

One of the three men charged with murder in the February 2020 death of Ahmaud Arbery is requesting to be released from jail while awaiting trial due to his blood pressure being uncontrollably high, according to a document filed in Glynn County Superior Court on Dec. 31, 2020.

Defendant William "Roddie" Bryan's attorney, Kevin Gough, is asking for a judge to grant a second bond hearing, saying Bryan's blood pressure was 190/100 as recently as Dec. 30, despite treatment rendered by the Glynn County Detention Center.
[.....]
Bryan is also the subject of a child sexual molestation investigation in Camden County, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

No date for a trial has been set.

I'm sure 190/100 wasn't nearly as high as Armaud's when he was hunted by 3 racists intent on his murder.
