My Opinion..... The Reward itself, large or small, most likely will not net the murder(s).
The strategy might be in how much the reward actually accrues....or doesn't accrue...
and why or why not...... Seems like there are REASONS behind this.......
If a person knew, I think they would have come forward with any information despite monetary gain...... Of course it could be greed and it would take a large reward for LE to accomplish gaining information, but I am thinking it is perhaps a different strategy, different take on things.....IMOO.

By the tone of Sills letter it sounds like he is saying a significant amount of money will make someone talk. What is the dollar amount that will make wealthy people talk? If I or family were worth millions, then $30,000 or $50,000 would not entice me to talk.

Therefore, is Sills saying the person he expects to tattle is not of the wealthy set?

I also think Sills should have a CrimeStoppers phone number so people could call in anonymously.

Maybe it isn't how much it would take for someone to talk, but maybe how much would be raised. How much is a Large Reward?
IMOO.

An interesting thought to ponder.
If you know, has a strategy like that been used before? TIA.

BBM... I've been trying to think of WHAT kind of strategy could it be? OR maybe I'm just HOPING it's a strategy because the alternative means LE has no leads at all which is distressing. :notgood:

I think I read ?somewhere? that Ohio has been using the tax-deductible approach wrt to these types of rewards for awhile.

I have a question. Has WS ever helped in the solving of a case?

It seems we have such good ideas and come up with lots of maybes that a LE could certainly look into.

Just wondering.

Yes, Websleuths has helped solve "unidentified cases", but I don't know specifically on murder cases.

OH MY, sorry about that, it was just something about either mexican cartel and beheadings or muslims and beheadings in the U.S

Just saying, it's real in this country, we can't discount it, we have to consider all possibilities

well we do here, we dont' have or know all the evidence that has been collected yet

It wasnt 'gross video from what I saw

It's very good. I'm listening and watching now. Big Ed Kemper! Geez he hung out with the cops. They couldn't believe he was the killer when he was caught. :tyou:

I know there are folks who would turn in their best friend, family member, next door neighbor, boss, preacher... for 30K, or a REDUCED SENTENCE if already incarcerated. 30K would buy a new truck, maybe a Horton Home, pay off someone's dealer...just my thoughts and opinions.

" Sills said he’s never solicited for a reward before in his 40 years in law enforcement but believes establishing one now “may well be the thing that will enable us to break this very difficult case.” "

From your link...

“I have found rewards at the onset of an investigation often become counterproductive and hinder the course of an investigation,” Sills said."
Counterproductive
I wonder how. Maybe too many calling with tips?

Am I the only one surprised the family has not offered a huge reward?

Nope! I'm shocked! Maybe someone on board can explain it to me. . .

ETA: Nursebeeme just explained it.

If the murderer wanted money, why didn't he rob the Dermonds? Whoever tries to claim this reward is going to end up implicating theirselves. They can't say they stood by and watched and finally when the reward was big enough they decide to rat out their friend who has a fetish for male heads.

Had not thought about that
True. Or by donating even?

Sills could have an unidentified finger print and he's just waiting... I guess they can donate anonymously? If they had to fill out paper work He has their name and prints.

Maybe it was something intangible.....an intangible asset.....
Then it wouldn't be something this person could "rob" per say from their home.
