Hiya wildebeest! After reading that article, I do believe maybe the perp(s) went to the Dermond home expecting them to be gone. I wish I could stop being so wishy-washy. All along I have thought that Derby Party somehow played into the Dermonds' murders. Maybe the perp(s) had a list of people planning to attend the Derby party and planned to hit all their houses. They accessed GW/RP by way of the Dermond's boat ramp or even further back on adjoining property. Perhaps the Dermonds were a little slow getting off to the party and the Dermonds and the perp(s) ran into each other. What's your opinion WB?

I have felt for sometime now that whoever did this knew about them living alone, knew how to navigate out of the sleepy cove in the dead of night, and out to the deep waters. He knew the lake so well he knew how to navigate around the surface tree tops that were quite plentiful in the big water. I also have felt they knew about the Derby party beforehand that the Dermonds were going to attend.

I think he thought they were gone and when they weren't all hell broke loose when they found him there.

More than a dozen divers from the Georgia State Patrol spent all day June 4 searching for a handgun reportedly used in a recent murder case and later thrown into Lake Oconee in Greene County.
"We've now given up on finding the gun used in the murder case,” Monroe Assistant Police Chief R.V. Watts said.

A total of 20 divers from the specialized unit of the state patrol took turns searching for a .22 semi-automatic handgun reportedly used in a slaying case, which happened May 16 in Monroe, he said.

Murky waters near the U.S. Highway 278 bridge at the Oconee National Forest Recreational Area again caused problems for divers, Watts said.

Divers had problems seeing past a certain distance and had to rely on feeling with their hands what was on the bottom of the lake, Watts said.

Ah, thank you so much.:blushing: I will have another very busy day tomorrow but I am trying to read some now during the evening. LOL! I have been even too tired to do that lately.

I have really missed all of you too and its great to see you Bootsie........as always.

I sure wish there would be a break in this case.

But I have felt from the very beginning that this is one of those kind of cases where no one heard or saw a thing when it was actually happening. This seems to happen is so many cases of late. I don't know if the criminals are getting smarter or are just lucky. Maybe a little bit of both.

Except maybe the person who said they saw someone walking on the D property on Saturday afternoon, iirc. But that must not panned out either. They must not have gotten a good look at the person. They probably had no reason at the time to pay any mind to him. I am sure they wish they had now since they know this has happened.

I do feel they were both killed on Saturday around the time of the Derby party. Just a gut feeling and nothing more though. (

Boots, I think you're right about the Derby party. I'm glad you kept on it, lol! I wasn't sure before, but it kinda clicked for me today when I read your posts. I too now think whoever did this expected the Dermond's to be at the party and were surprised to come upon the Dermond's. Why such brutality though??

Yes, its a shame they cant find the gun but that is really trying to find a needle in a haystack while being blindfolded.

My ex-husband was on the police force here for 8 years and he was on the search/rescue dive team. He had to search for evidence and for bodies in the river and lakes around where we lived. He said you couldn't even see your hand before your face. He said when they were searching for bodies it was really spooky because if they did happen to find them most of the time he would bumped into the body with his face mask. They would just all of a sudden pop up right where he was. He said it is a weird feeling for the body to be rubbing right up against you, and before then, you didn't even know they were there. Its all hand feeling due to the water being so dark and murky.

But thank goodness a weapon doesn't have to be located in order to get a conviction. Unfortunately many criminals get rid of the weapon they used but LE can and does get them in other ways.

Thank you so much Solitaryone. Good to know I'm not as crazy as I thought. I think Mr. D put up onehelluva fight, or Mrs. D. Mrs. D had to be elsewhere when Mr. D was attacked, or maybe Mrs. D was attacked first. If they had Mrs. D already Mr. D probably would not have put up a fight, but like someone here posted Mrs. D heard some noise outside and went to investigate. I think that is what happened. Mr. D was tough, WWII tough. He wasn't going down without a fight, and Shirley might have been the same way. I think she came out into the garage or around from the back of the house and the second perp was hiding watching the struggle between Mr. D and the first perp and when Mrs. D came around he hit her on the head with something, a unique weapon that left a distinguishing mark on her head.

ETA: I think Ocean was on this line of thinking from the beginning. Somehow she brought me around to her way of thinking. (that should be a country song)

If there was more than one killer this could certainly be what happened. I've wondered off and on if there was more than one, could it have been a man and a woman?

Sounds like everyone is on edge. Can't blame them. However, they blew up the tacklebox even after determining it was non-hazardous material. Guess they were practicing :facepalm: All those kiddos that had to be evacuated brings back memories of the Oklahoma City bombing.

Ok, I always think a little more clearly after some exercise, now I'm ready for a cold beverage and more thoughtful ideas from you guys. East2west - like what you offered. I keep thinking if it wasn't some druggie type, then who? And I go immediately to $$. Let's just say if you needed them dead for whatever reason, and you were in business with them (related or not?), how do you go about finding someone who is a hunter/fisherman that does this kind of thing? That's a rhetorical question, I'm sure WE don't know but it feels like a set-up. Even if they didn't approach the front door, they were able to get Mr. D outside..how? And was it someone who knew their routine, where they were going late Saturday afternoon, the cameras weren't working, or that they would have their system off during daylight hours? That's taking a pretty big chance unless you knew or you were sent on THAT day. And I agree with you about Mrs. D; I thought if it was a druggie, he could just be mad and say to Mr. D (about killing her) "See what you made me do". Now he's enraged. If not that, who would WANT the head?
I'm in the same vacuum and here I thought I was being clear headed, haha!

catching up on the forum, I have to agree, to a degree, with you and East2west, it does seem organized and my thoughts remain, WHO would want a head, that could lead us to the answer to WHO the perp is, WHO WHO, and WHY, I'm not gonna elaborate on the rest, so many scenarios, NC being one !

me too. SS said at least 2, so that's why when those 3 were arrested my interest was raised because one was a woman. If the Dermonds were not surprised then they were lured outside. I don't think Mrs. D would be easily lured by a man, but a woman - yes, I think a woman could lure her. I once gave 2 women a ride. I could have kicked myself afterwards, but I just didn't feel any "danger warning signs." Very dumb of me though.

Thanks for sharing your ex's experience with search/rescue dive team. I think you must have been reading my mind because the whole time I was reading the article about them searching for the gun I kept thinking that if they had found Mr. D's head. . . which would have been a good thing, but would have "freaked me out" - sort of like a scene out of Jaws.

Gosh! How could I forget about the cameras being out? Thanks for reminding me TK and Happyshoes. Maybe that is why the Dermonds were getting a late start to the party. Somebody was supposed to come install cameras on their property or fix them if they were out. Foxfire found the link between the NC's and their security camera installing business! What made me think a woman was involved was that the people who install the security cameras from the NC are a husband and wife team...

I remember from the interview with Sheriff Sills, sorry I don't have the link, but it was the reporter who asked Sheriff Sills if the killer would have been experienced in dressing out deer, and Sheriff Sills said yes and other large animals. So now after reading your post, I'm wondering why the reporter in asking Sheriff Sills that question used "deer" as the example, lol.

Yes, you would have to know how to slaughter or take them to a slaughter house. Have neighbors that will occasionally butcher a goat or kill a deer and hang the carcass up for the world to see. Didn't someone post that there is a deer processing plant nearby? I think most people would lean taking their deer to a plant such as this. Use the whole deer, deer sausage, etc. Probably not our killer though. He might work at a deer processing plant or if he kills a deer he butchers it himself. A buffalo would be at least a two man job - I would think, but then again I have never butchered a buffalo, nor do I want to.

The NC had no problems killing, skinning and dividing a dog in half to scare the one lady. I wonder if it was her dog. That would have pissed me off royally, well any animal to be killed to sent a message would be scary too.
