One or both of them could have been dead before they hit the ground.
As horrible as it sounds, I hope that was the case. To imagine anything else is just horrific.

I have a dog that’s just had knee surgery and he is under strict crate rest while his leg is healing. When I learned that two dogs were alive and roaming I wondered if the third dog was being crated for medical reasons.
A few thoughts on the crate:
It's been mentioned they recently got a 3rd dog, but I can't find the article I saw that in. This could be a puppy that was being crate trained, as some people find that a great "skill" for a dog to have. Perhaps if it was a puppy, it was having quiet time away from the others, or they were being slowly introduced. It may have been injured or recovering from an operation. Maybe it was somewhat destructive, and/or liked to roam at night, so crating was chosen for this particular dog. The most likely scenario I think, is that the other 2 dogs had been released from their crates before the event/series of events happened, and the other dog had not. A close call for the other 2 perhaps.

Both Gene & Betsy were dressed casually (track pants/long sleeved t-shirt type clothes)- could they have slept in those clothes? Or just gotten dressed for the day? I feel like this was a morning event/series of events, I don't know why, but it would fit my theory of the 3rd dog not being released from the crate for the day yet, and the others roaming free.

Guys, I'm an idiot about the 'greenphones'. I know no one has actually engaged with that line of thinking and now I know why!

Talked to my friend about it, and seems like that's an old thing that doesn't exist now.

So Gene and Betsy did apparently have matching green colored cell phones!

I am sure this is irrelevant. It's just an odd detail.

And I wanted to correct my earlier misleading speculation.

My daughter has a green iPhone. I assumed the 2 green phones they recovered were something like that.

Can you tell where the mudroom would be? Can you get us some blueprints? (kidding)
funny but logical request! It is difficult trying to find the mudroom.

For me, the third dog indicates that Becky and Gene were both quickly incapacitated.
At first the death of the dog in the closet made me think the dog ate some of the pills and got sick (was making me think suicide by becky from grief)
but as soon as they mentioned the dog in the crate at the press conference I immediately changed into Becky had a sudden event that made it impossible to care for the dog. there is no way any dog owner would leave an animal in a crate.

i believe there is probably a solid veterinarian response to this whole issue....
If this was a newer dog as one referenced above, this would make all the sense in the world.

Maybe when the dust settles, a vet will be able to speak up.

I remember how in the 90es, I was asked whom of Hollywood actors I'd consider "cute" (they used a different word), and i said, Gene Hackman, to everyone's surprise. But I can view only whole personalities, not just looks, so yes, this is how i defined him. He disappeared so quietly, btw. Everyone mentions Betsy taking a good care of him. I bet he, in his old age, fully understood it and was very thankful to her.

Same! He was my celebrity crush for decades. :)

Keep your Warren Beattys and give me the Gene Hackmans any day.

I'm still waiting to see - definitely - if the poor pup was deceased in an open or locked crate which I haven't seen yet and if it's been stated please let me know.

If it was located in a locked crate then, obviously, something happened that didn't allow for Betsy or Gene to unlock it and free it. (Horrible to think about this scenario and that poor dog)

But, if it was located in an open crate and had retreated into it then that could means that the dogs death could be the result of something else that ties their deaths together.

Sorry, I’m not used to this type of architecture or layout design. — I put this together real quick & maybe others can chime in, too.

Below is all my opinion, based on Google Earth imagery (source listed in quoted post), property record abbreviations, the search warrant that states,

  1. After Deputy Thomas entered the residence, he immediately observed a bathroom to the left of the front door. The door to the bathroom was opened.”
  2. THE FRONT DOOR IS FACING SOUTHEAST. THE DOOR APPEARS TO BE A GRAND ENTRY WITH GLASS WINDOW AND BLACK METAL FRAME.

IMG_9958.jpeg

  • Filled-In Grey = Open Masonry Porch / “OMP”
  • Yellow = Assumed entry/ exit points based on different line-type used for diagram.
  • Shaded grey= Not familiar with this.. Looks to be some sort of entry way, almost like a garage (but I don’t believe it is). Either way, it’s different than the normal home layout. (different roofs in comparison to the home.)
  • Blue Circle = Circular / dome-shaped, potentially sky-light/ ‘observatory’ glass paneled window(s)
  • Red = My opinion on where Betsy & Gene may have been at, when found. ‘Mudroom’ is most likely an area that leads inside, from the structure highlighted black/grey, next to it.

Attaching below,
-Google earth imagery of apparent stairs leading to front of the home
-Example of what the ‘blue circle’ as described above, may look like.

I agree with the placement of the first bathroom. This would be where the initial responder would have been able to look inside and not be able to open a locked door

I think the mudroom was off to the side/upper right in this photo. the google imagery of the location (I've already linked source above) leads me to belive its where they could let the dogs out, they would be contained by the ledge and fence (not off in the mountains with coyotes). It also looks from another angle that it was the outdoor patio too

another angle from Realtor.com
shows how the door could be open to let dogs in and out, but also why dogs couldn't go too far from the house

Yes, i think it’s in that same area as well! I took your photo & added a blue circle where i believe that structure leads to inside

Thank you both for doing that.
(Looks like someone is standing outside in that bottom picture; I know it's not a current pic)

At first I thought they were found closer together. This makes the caretaker saying 1-2 people make more sense. He saw one and probably assumed the worst.

yes. its such an odd little structure, but as stated in the NYPost article i posted and linked earlier, Gene had been into gardening so this would be a perfect place for it

IMO,
With the ‘grand entry with glass windows’
& where that circular dome & stairs are, I think it’s very possible he could have seen both of them !

Perfect area of the home to have an adjacent mudroom with that possibly being the door the dogs go in and out from. Gosh, it's such a beautiful place now with this tragedy attached.

Ahh, a greenhouse-type structure! That makes so much sense!
