I had to tell my Mum who has dementia that my Sister had died. Her death was sudden and traumatic. She lived a good distance away so my Mum wouldn't have regular visits. I thought about not telling her but the burden of such a secret was too much for me. It also felt like i was deceiving my Mum in the worst way. I told her but was frugal with the cause of death and she reacted as you would expect. Devastated, crying, asking questions. She forgot quite quickly and i will never tell her again. It is too cruel reminding those with dementia of such sad events as they react just the same each time as if first they knew of it. The Alzheimer's society in the UK suggest using diversion techniques if they mention the loved one. For example, i used to have an elderly neighbour with dementia and some nights to give his family a break, i would cook his evening meal. Once he got upset I hadn't made a meal for his wife who had died a few years before. Instead of reminding him she was dead, I started talking about the apple pie she would make me every sunday. He then joined in talking about her baking. Crisis averted. Sorry to digress but it a subject close to my heart.
Thank you, I could have written that myself. Yes to diversion.

Some people always seem to hope for the worst possible scenario.
I'm hoping that the causes of death will be announced, and that they are natural and/or accidental.
I've thought from the start that Betsy probably died suddenly and unexpectedly of a natural cause, and that Gene fell and couldn't get up without help. These things happen every day, but it's not so often that a sudden death indirectly leads to another.

I can understand why it seems that way, but speaking only for myself, I think it's a misunderstanding to say anyone is 'hoping for the worst'.

Bad things happen in this world. And they happen alot to elderly vulnerable people.

The police know this, which is why they are considering all the options and haven't closed the case at the face value of what they found at the scene, but are investigating further.

My desire is that bad people don't get away with doing bad things.

I'm glad that an investigation is being done, in order to rule out the worst possible scenario.

Certainly not because I'm hoping for it.

To be honest, it's hard to know what to 'hope for' in this case, because all the possibilities are horrifying.

How did she know the mother had forgotten? Ask her? So I'm coming at this particular criticism from the aspect of having 2 close relatives with dementia. Would I remind them that their growm child had died? Would I pass the phone call from the police to either of my relatives to hear such news? No.

But thanks for the correaction, I had that wrong.
Years ago my former BF and his brother were the Health Care and Financial POAs (Power of Attorney) for their aging aunt and uncle who had no chidren of their own. The couple "Jane and John" eventually had to be moved out of their apartment into an assisted living center. Jane started showing signs of dementia and eventually she was moved into the memory care section. Shortly therafter John was hospitalized and Jane kept asking the staff where's John? They would explain he's in the hospital. When John passed away the brothers went to tell Jane. They broke the news and Jane cried for about half an hour. She stopped crying, looked at them and asked "Where's John?" At the time I had wondered should they even have told her? She truly grieved her husband for a short period of time. Was it fair to let her feel that grief even if was soon forgotten? The brothers felt that legally and and morally they needed to tell her that her husband had passed ... a tough decision to make.

Isn't it 2:30 CST time now? Or is the PC an hour from now? One site says it's in an hour, but I thought it would be a 2:30 CST.

Weird.
I see that it says 2p but I wonder why the 'live' from Court TV is counting a half hour behind making it 2:30 MST?

Oh, I'm quite sure that some people crave drama. However straightforward a death seems to be, you can bet that there will be some coming up with the most convoluted theories.
