So sad to hear of his passing, he was a great actor. CO poisoning sounds possible. I can imagine the GSD’s as one being loyal and staying with them in their trouble and succumbing while the other 2 were downstairs or outside. What a sad loss.

The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found dead alongside their dog
after a neighbor called police to perform a welfare check on them. Police have said that no foul play is suspected and that two dogs survived the triple tragedy.

Rbm.

Maybe the neighbor was used to seeing them outside for a while each day ... and hadn't seen them at all for some time ?
Gene has adult kids; but I was thinking if they live out of state, or just a distance from him --and have busy schedules, it wouldn't be uncommon to go for a time without calling Gene and his wife ?
Omo.

Couple important CO reminders:

1. An open window will not necessarily prevent poisoning. This is a dangerous myth. If you suspect poisoning, open the windows - but don’t rely on an open window to save you.

2. CO is odorless.

3. Early CO symptoms include confusion. The victim may not have the presence of mind to open windows/get to safety.

4. CO detectors (and smoke detectors) expire.

5. CO detectors (and smoke detectors) need to be installed per manufacturer instructions. Read the instructions on where to place your defectors. Don’t just slap it on a random wall and expect effective protection. In some towns, the fire dept will install your detector for free.

6. If you cannot afford detectors, ask your local fire dept, police dept, or hospital.

Nathan Lane pays tribute to his "The Birdcage" co-star Gene Hackman: “Gene was my favorite actor, as I think I told him every day we worked together. Getting to watch him up close, it was easy to see why he was one of our greatest. You could never catch him acting. Simple and true, thoughtful and soulful, with just a hint of danger. He was as brilliant in comedy as he was in drama and thankfully his film legacy will live on forever. It was a tremendous privilege to get to share the screen with him and remains one of my fondest memories. Rest in peace, Mr. Hackman.”Read more here: https://variety.com/2025/film/news/gene-hackman-death-reactions-francis-ford-coppola-1236322137/

At first link click i got the ever so common .... buy the magazine restrictive screen.
Then I tried again, and so glad I did!!!
This house style is just so special...

So how do we connect possible CO poisoning in the open style space and relatively moderate temperatures in Albuquerque....
I had to open it with incognito mode on Chrome. Beautiful home, and I agree, if CO poisoning, how?? I’m feeling there is more to this. Hope not.

Super weird. I liked the carbon monoxide theory, but the pills and the lack of detected gas adds a huge wrinkle.

In a suicide pact, you’d expect them to be found together.

So I think a murder/suicide is possible, or maybe he died naturally and she decided to kill herself too. Maybe that was a favorite dog or something.

Of course the details are subject to change, and this could very well be carbon monoxide.

“According to a search warrant, obtained by TMZ, a Santa Fe detective who sought a search warrant wrote in his affidavit, he believes "the death of the two deceased individuals to be suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation because the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened, deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak."

Arakawa was discovered lying on the bathroom floor of the couple's home, with an open prescription bottle of pills scattered across a nearby countertop.

A space heater was found next to her head, which investigators believe may have fallen.

Hackman was found dead in a mud room off the couple's kitchen, the warrant said.

Sky News halted for breaking news as the Sheriff's office confirmed that Gene and Betsy had been "dead for some time".

Meanwhile their dog was found dead inside its kennel, Sheriff Adan Mendoza revealed.

No suicide note was found and there were no obvious signs of trauma to the bodies," Mendoza added.

The deceased dog, a German Shepherd, was found 10 to 15 feet from Betsy, in a closet of the bathroom. Two other dogs were found alive and healthy -- one inside the house and one outside.

The bodies were discovered by 2 maintenance workers, who said they hadn't seen them in approximately 2 weeks. When the maintenance workers arrived to discover the bodies, the front door was ajar, but the deputy says there were no signs of forced entry.

“I never wanted to be anything but an actor,” Hackman said in his 2003 speech at the Golden Globes, where he received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.

“George Scott had a line in ‘Patton’ that I think is appropriate: ‘God help me, I love it.’ I truly do.” ❤️

The Prince of Wales wrote on social media: "So sad to hear the news of the death of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy.

"Hackman was a true genius of film who brought each and every character to life with power, authenticity and star quality. W."

Becoming a writer was, Hackman explained, a “natural transition”. “One asks oneself questions as an actor like, ‘where am I coming from? Where am I going? What do I want?’ Those three simple things can carry you a long way as an actor. As a writer, you can start the same way.”

In a letter to the NIH, Hackman wrote, “Scientists around the world have largely stopped experimenting on chimpanzees, in part because these animals just haven’t proven to be good models for human health research. The United States is the last developed country on earth still making large-scale use of chimpanzees in invasive experiments.”

Geez, my mind is twisting on this one.
If not CO.. we know now about pills..

Could the favorite dog have first passed, causing her to become despondent and take her own life. And Gene needed a lot of assistance and without it, he passed away?

More likely of course, would be Gene passed first and she took out herself and the dog. Or she fed pills to Gene, then herself.. but the dog? I suppose a pill could be wrapped in a dog treat.

Ugh.

For those of you who are younger than others here, please look into his amazing wealth of work (his movies). He was a giant in the film industry.
A few of my personal favorites are:
1967: Bonnie and Clyde
1971: The French Connection
1974: Young Frankenstine

According to Daily Mail article above, the door to the house was open. One dog was roaming the property. The deceased dog was found "in a closet" 10-15 feet away from Betsy.

Also, it seems like two maintenance workers discovered the bodies, not police.

"Two maintenance workers called Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler discovered the bodies of Arakawa and her retired Hollywood star husband at their luxurious million Santa Fe mansion Wednesday at 1:46pm Mountain Time.[...] Begay and Kesler told investigators they hadn't seen them for two weeks."

New article at Daily Mail is absolutely disturbing:
Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found partially-mummified at the couple's $3.3 million mansion, with pills strewn in their bathroom.

This from the article seems to rule out CO poisoning.

“Firefighters were called to the property but there were no signs of a gas leak.”
