I suspect that C's father has good superannuation they can live off but C's mother runs a laundry there. I guess she will get others to manage it now. I just think that C's mother is a generous, loving woman. B's father is an architect/civil engineer so he would earn good money but maybe he is not a generous man. We don't really know what type of relationship B had with him if he had not even met Lydia. Surely B could have taken Lydia there to meet his parents even if C did not wish to go.

And as well as the heartbreak, they have (possibly) shame as well. Their friends and neighbours will have no idea what to say to them, or how to help them. It is also a tragedy for them.
