Hurricane Sandy updates

I don't think it's different. The CNN one is the fullest. The one you posted just omits the part where she went up to the home: http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/02/world/americas/sandy-staten-island-brothers/index.html?iref=allsearch

It was after he denied entry, according to CNN, that the boys were ripped from her arms by a wave.

I meant the article was different because it says that Glenda and the boys exited the vehicle because the SUV stalled, not because it got stuck in a hole. It also says the boys were carried away by the waves just after getting out of the SUV, not that they all got out, made it to the fallen over tree and held on for hours and then made it to the guy's house to ask for shelter and were denied.

I've read a lot of articles and watched the CNN story several times. That guy was not the only person she asked for help and/or shelter. Where are the other people who also denied her help and/or shelter?

I'm not sure, but I just did a check for Philadelphia deaths, and while 12 people did lose their lives in Pennsylvania, I can't find a death in Philly.

Again, I can't be sure, because I don't know the whole area, and don't know where Filly lives exactly, so take this with a grain of salt.

Prayers for all those who are missing from the boards...check in, please! And let us know how you're doing and what we can do to help.

Best-

It's not clear that anyone at all denied her shelter - but there apparently were several who declined to come out in the storm and help her search.

Only CNN, and those who quote CNN, think anyone denied Glenda Moore and her boys shelter.

Yes, if we can do anything to help, please let us know if you have needs we can help with. If it can't be mailed in, I'm not that far from NYC and can make a run down 84/95 to meet folks who need supplies if necessary.

According to a direct quote from Police Commissioner Kelly, in the struggles to get the boys out of the flooded SUV, Glenda placed the boys on the roof of the vehicle and then the vehicle washed away, and the boys washed away with it.

There was no account, in Kelly's retelling, of her managing to get the boys to safety of a front porch and then being denied entrance to a home with them. She lost the boys before she had gotten them away from the vehicle.

I found this comment on the article found at this link : http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/02/world/americas/sandy-staten-island-brothers/index.html?iref=allsearch

I am bringing it here perhaps add to an understanding of who the mom was (ie her job, what she was doing there, her state of mind prior to the tragedy). I know we normally don't post comments from other links but this is not inflammatory or something that would cause harm to the mom's reputation, and is a sensationalized rumor. It is comment by someone who sounds like they may (or may not) know what they are talking about.

Mods, please delete this or correct me if I am very bad for posting this.

"Glenda Moore did not live in an area that was under mandatory evacuation..her home was not flooded. She was on her way to her sister's house to drop off her children on her way to work at a nearby hospital as she is a Nurse and apparently a dedicated one. Maybe natures elements were not so bad when she left her home and began her journey. She probably thought she would make it to work.. but then.. what happened happened.. she did not have her children when she went to this guys house..the children had already been pulled from her arms by the 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 of water. She was looking for help to find them as any desperate parent in the same situation would. Maybe this was not a logical thought considering the elements at that time. She wasn't ready to give up on her children. I think this would be a normal human response. What is sad is she spent the night on somebody's back step riding out the storm as nobody was willing to offer her shelter. It is obvious she wanted to stay close to where she lost her children. When daylight came she flagged down a police officer and told them what happened and the search for her children began. I cannot even begin to fathom the guilt and anguish she is suffering. Please don't judge her. For those of us with a heart of compassion please pray for her."

I have done a lot of work at WS with Jersey*Girl. I have lost contact with JG since noon time on the 30th when she headed to the flooded area in her neighbourhood. JG has an IPhone so usually no issues keeping in touch.

JG had a rough night when Sandy hit and had moved all the bottom level items to the top level of the house. JG lives near where the bulkheads along the Delaware River breached and overflowed.

JG did check in with WS but I have not heard anything from her since around 1:20pm on the 30th and this is just not like JG not to keep in touch. Nothing on WS and I have had no email contact either.

JG needs to check in.

I am confused. Thanks chewy for the map of the area and skagrl for the ws article link.
They lived on Nash Court. If you look at the map, why did she drive the road along the ocean? She could have driven Hylan blvd straight and blocks away from the beach. Was the blvd blocked? Why did she choose to go, correct me locals if I am wrong, but out of the way to get to the main road to Brooklyn? And why was she going to back doors? Tia. RIP

Jerseygirl and Filly ! Where are you ? Hope all is ok.

I am going to have faith its a power thing with Jersey and Fhilly. Phildelphia took the storm well. The city just doesn't have tree growth to cause alot of destruction and those old houses are built like fortresses. Jersey Girl, I don't know what area shes in, but if its the north its a mess. Twenty minutes from Phila. didn't have much of anything, my family is spread out all over there, Jersey side. Only one lost their power.

It's a shame this happened. She should have left on Saturday....heck, even Sunday.

Has anyone heard of looters DURING the storm ?

No. I've heard of them after, though.

Yeah, I do think you're right. It does seem that she was alone when she went up to the house asking for help.

So she was either asking for refuge or asking for help to find her boys.

And that's interesting to me because the man who failed to let her in and who denied that she ever came up to his front door or ever asked for help (she just tried to bash in his back door window) stated that, "What was I supposed to do? I was wearing shorts and we were told not to try to rescue people". Or something to that effect. So that tells me he did know that the woman was asking for some kind of help. He's a liar.

I am confused. Thanks chewy for the map of the area and skagrl for the ws article link.

I wondered that even before knowing where she lived. Hylan is not right against the screaming, violent, rushing sea yet it goes to the same place. But, as some kind poster pointed out, people panic and can't always think straight.

As to why she was going to back doors, we don't know that she was only going to back doors. One report states that she went to the front door first and then the back when there was no response.

Well, she stayed out all night on that man's porch or, if you don;t believe that article, she stayed all night right near that area, outside. I'm sure she didn't want to do that and it defies logic that she would fail to ask for shelter. The man stated he saw her (but thought he was a man) trying to get in. I highly doubt she just started breaking into his window. I have no doubt she banged on his door first and was ignored.

It makes no sense that someone would say, "I'm sorry ma'm, I'm not going out there, but please come inside, and we can call the police and get help," and she would just ignore the person and sit huddled outside all night. Any mom would be desperate for professional help.

Good news! I finally connected with one of my "missing" friends. As I assumed, she's been out of power- still is but I caught her on her cell phone. Luckily there are a number of places around here offering to take anyone in to charge their mobile devices, use wi-fi, get warm, etc. One woman down the street ran a long line out of her house with an extension cord and a sign offering free charging (and coffee inside!). I was actually going to hit up one of these places as I realized that I haven't paid my bills (I do it all on line) but my sister came over with her laptop which has a Verizon air card, so I was able to catch up with bills, and catch up on WS on a normal sized screen instead of my phone! Now, just waiting for dh and ds to come home from a day of clearing trees!
So, I am convinced our missing websleuthers are just out of power, too inundated with getting back on their feet, or unable to use a cell phone for other reasons. :praying:

Thank you so much!!! My town is listed as 50% out and not due back on until Monday...

Some towns/counties are not listed. Do you know if that means it's because they don't have an ET on service resumption (is that a word? I'm losing my mind, and my vocabulary, lately, lol!)?

Everything good here, albeit a tad shaken up but ok.

Very sorry for just now checking in but transformers were sparking all night last night, was very scary.

Wanted to mention by the grace of God there's no major damage here. I absolutely can't believe it. We were feeling 85+ mph winds & the heaviest part of the storm (what comes after the eye) was dead set to target our area. Well at the last minute it curved & missed us by about 4-6 miles. We didn't even flood. I swear I think it's divine intervention. The nuclear power plant (PSE&G) didn't obtain any damage at all, neither did DuPont's. truly - it's hard to believe. I'm so very grateful.

My heart goes out to all that was in the path of this cyclone. It was a beast of a storm!

I have multiple relatives living on the coast, an aunt & uncle plus a great aunt living in AC - re the mayor in AC, it's not how it seems. My family got out but several people stayed in shelters that felt they had nowhere to go. The mayor informed the people it is ill advised to stay. He tried to coordinate last minute shelters to try to help those that refused to leave for whatever reason they had. IMO, & in my family's opinion, he didnt do his job to the best of his ability bc he should have demanded they leave & if not then leave them on their own to suffer their own consequences. It was stupid for anybody living in a coastal area around there to stay. They should have heeded Gov Christie's warnings - they didn't. However, the mayor of AC did warn his residents, he was only remiss in the way he said it. He should have been more demanding to drive it home to them that this was a very serious situation, one in which there could be loss of life.

Right now there's 2 feet of sand in my aunt's neighborhood. Omg. She took video of 15-20 ft waves before she & my uncle rolled. It's unbelievable.

2.4 million in NJ without power. Almost 8 million in combined states of NJ, MD, DE, NY and lower part of PA. That's not counting what will happen in upper PA. I'm not sure of the numbers in CT.

Do stuff inside & get your rest, too. The outside stuff can wait. :)

Oh my gosh... Is that a double rainbow?

Omg I absolutely can't believe the call I just received. I just now found out that one street over from me flooded in the early morning hours, that the whole area in my neighborhood that lies along the river was flooded. We didn't have mandatory evacuations here, were told we'd get a call or door to door contact if we had to evacuate & would be given a couple hours notice - nothing. Omg.

Going down the street now to see the damage. Jesus.

Listening to Mayor Alonzo speak now.

He needs to shut up. He's lying on National TV bc he looks stupid putting people in a school shelter only about a mile away from the ocean. He's talking disparaging remarks against Gov Christie bc Gov Christie pointed the finger at him. IMO he's a tool that looks like a fool. My aunt & uncle told me first hand what this guy said yesterday. Omg he needs to shut his face. IMO he's afraid of lawsuits coming his way.

Not having read every post on every thread, I read and recall JG's post about what happened in her neighborhood just a block over from her house. Here are JG's last several posts, last one 11:07 a.m. on October 30.

JG has many relatives throughout the area but I wonder if she discovered she had to evacuate shortly after she last posted. Shoot, I can't recall which town but it's flooded and Katie C. mentioned on her show that they didn't have mandatory evacuation in that area. Yet it turned out to be an area where people had to be rescued with that front load truck and the news showed men carrying women on their shoulders out of their houses so their feet/legs wouldn't get wet. I think that's the same town anyway. :waitasec:

I'm concerned about JG because it sounded as if she was planning to go out to explore but then return to her house. She may have had to leave her area quickly.

Can she log onto WS without her own computer (AP address?) or is that a hassle? If she left suddenly, she may not have any of her gadgets with her.

The Mayor wouldn't know who she is, would he? Yikes! :what:

I'm not sure she wanted in - she was in a complete and total panic about her sons. Her sister, and the articles (except CNN) say she wanted people to come out and help her -she wasn't seeking shelter.

THey didn't have power, and cell phone towers were down, and it's highly unlikely that 911 could have come out at that time anyway - mayors and governors were telling those who didn't evacuate that there wouldn't be emergency services available during the storm.

The articles I've read say she spent the night on a porch in an empty home.

Kelly Ripa was on Jimmy Kimmel show out of Brooklyn last night. As she sat down to chat, she said that her building in Soho, which is lower Manhattan I guess, just got power back. She said she received the message 'just now' before walking onto the set.

She told a story about her husband owning fancy radios that can be used in case of emergency. Well, they wouldn't work the night of the storm. As the family sat there together feeling sort of defeated, her daughter asked, "what about my Bratz doll truck?" Her daughter ran to get the toy that is tens years old and, as far as Kelly knows, the batteries have never been changed.
Any hope of having a way to hear news of what was going on outside was low. After the toy was turned on, the radio played clear as a bell! Cute story.
