Man connected to Chris Bagley investigation pleads not guilty to federal charge
30-year-old Andrew Shaw entered a written plea of not guilty to the charge of possession of a firearm as a drug user.

Shaw is named in a search warrant executed at the home on Mount Vernon Road on Jan. 8 where Chris Bagley was last seen. The warrant says investigators learned through interviews that “Andy” Shaw had a hit out for Bagley due to an ongoing feud. The warrant continues to say that, “it is believed that Bagley is no longer alive based on these interviews and circumstances surround Bagley’s disappearance.” A woman who drove Bagley to his last known whereabouts told investigators that Bagley and Paul Hoff had robbed Shaw, who supplied marijuana to Bagley to sell. Shaw denied that he had a hit out for Bagley’s life, but did admit that he wanted him harmed for what he did in the past.

[...]

Investigators said Drew Blahnik confessed to killing Bagley in the trailer belonging to Paul Hoff on Dec.14. Hoff told investigators the night of the stabbing, Blahnik and a man named Drew Wagner took Bagley’s body away in a truck.

Blahnik and Hoff are in custody on unrelated federal charges, but Wagner is not.

So far, no charges have been filed in connection to Bagley’s death.

It’s been two months since Chris Bagley’s body was found buried in southeast Cedar Rapids and five months since his death, but no one has been charged and his family is frustrated. “There was a confession … what? Two months ago,” Courtney Bagley, 29, formerly of Walker, told The Gazette during an interview Thursday. “I just don’t want this to get dropped or this just being in federal court and they are trying to catch people for drugs. I don’t understand what’s going on.”...

Sheriff Brian Gardner confirmed that with The Gazette on Thursday, adding that the case has been turned over to Linn County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden for his review. Gardner said with a “complicated” case like this, involving many witnesses and hundreds of pages to review, the charges may not come as quickly as some hope. He understands the family’s frustration but sometimes it just takes time, he said. Vander Sanden said he also understands the impatience and pain the Bagley family is going through. He said the sheriff’s office isn’t the only agency involved in the investigation — it also is being investigated at the federal level because most of the people connected to Chris Bagley have been charged in federal court.

Detectives learned one man had a "hit" out for Bagley for an ongoing feud between them, according to the warrant. Another person threatened to cut Bagley's tongue out so he could not be a "rat" as he faced possible federal prosecution, authorities said.

Investigators searched a mobile home at 7100 Mount Vernon Road SE in Cedar Rapids, where Bagley was last seen alive, a Linn County sheriff's sergeant said in the warrant. The warrant application, all of which became public last week, details the timeline of Bagley's disappearance and threats made against him.

Not sure I’m convinced that “Shaw successfully ordered a hit on Bagley.” We’ll see how it plays out, but I’m pretty confident Shaw will be locked up for life before he stands trial in Bagley’s case.

Man who confessed to killing Chris Bagley awaits August trial for unrelated charges
The trial has been pushed back for man who federal investigators say confessed to stabbing Chris Bagley to death, for state charges unrelated to Bagley’s death. Bagley, who lived in Walker, disappeared in mid-December and his remains were recovered in March at a Cedar Rapids home mentioned in court documents to have been occupied by a man named Drew Wagner.

Drew Blahnik, 32, has pleaded not guilty to one count of controlled substance violation and one count of failure to affix drug stamp. At a hearing Wednesday in the Linn County Courthouse, his trial, originally set for July, was pushed back to August 12.

[...]

Linn County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden, who is currently handling the case, has not yet filed any charges related to Bagley’s death. When CBS2 news spoke to Vander Sanden earlier this month, he said that he had received “probably over 600 pages of reports; just as many photographs, and roughly 20 video-taped interviews.” Vander Sanden said he can’t provide a timeline for a charging decision, but his office is “trying to expedite our review of the case.”

A Cedar Rapids man, who lived in the mobile home where Christopher Bagley was fatally stabbed last December, pleaded Thursday to firearms and drug charges in federal court.

Paul Hoff, 40, is among several others not charged in the death of the 31-year-old Walker man, who went missing Dec. 12 from his home, but their charges stem from the fatal stabbing investigation.

[...]

U.S. Magistrate Mark Roberts said Hoff faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and possibly up to life in federal prison. He also faces up to four years of supervised release on the distribution charge and five years on the firearms charge following his prison terms.

[...]

Hoff said Bagley left between 7 and 7:30 a.m. He didn’t know who Bagley left with or what vehicle he got into when leaving, according to the warrant.

According to testimony from a federal agent at an April hearing, Drew Wagner, charged with drugs, was fighting with Bagley in Hoff’s trailer Dec. 14, and another man, Drew Blahnik, stabbed Bagley as Wagner pinned Bagley against a wall.

More than 30 charged with federal gun violations since March
[...]

Deegan also announced the U.S. District Attorney’s Office of Northern Iowa has charged 32 others with federal gun violations since March.

[...]

“By going after folks that unlawfully possess firearms and getting them off the streets before that firearm is used in an offense or shot somebody, that’s an effective way to keep the crime rate down in your community,” said Deegan.

Deegan said the project targets some of Iowa’s most violent offenders, such as felons and domestic abusers.

At least three of those 32 are also involved in another high profile death case, that of Chris Bagley.

40-year-old Paul Hoff, 31-year-old Andrew Shaw, and 32-year-old Drew Blahnik are tied to the Bagley murder investigation and are now behind bars for federal gun and other related charges.

"Further investigative steps" taken in Chris Bagley's death
[...]

Over email, Vander Sanden confirmed with CBS2 news that "further investigative steps are being taken."

Court records show in late May, a search warrant was executed for the cell phone records of CM.

CM had told investigators that she had seen Bagley at the mobile home where he was killed December 14th, according to a January search warrant obtained by the Gazette that has since been sealed. CM was believed to be the girlfriend of Paul Hoff, whose trailer Bagley died in. Hoff is currently behind bars on charges unrelated to Bagley's death.

Vander Sanden said he was not able to comment on the search warrant specifically, but said he is still reviewing the case, and intends to make a public statement on his decision regarding charges in Bagley's death.

Six months and no charges, Bagley family living a "nightmare"
Courtney Bagley says she wakes up many nights drenched in sweat.

"Just thinking about what he went through, what they put them through," she said.

September 1 marked six months since Chris Bagley's remains were recovered from the frozen ground at a home on Soutter Avenue in Southeast Cedar Rapids.

[...]

Chris' father, Stewart Bagley, says he's been off work since late July because he's having troubles coping.

"We see a counselor, we see a psychologist, once, twice a week," he said. "We're to the point now that they tell us we can't move forward until the next process is done."

[...]

Courtney says one of the hardest things to deal with has been strangers approaching her in public, wanting to know details about the case.

"We don't have any clue as to time frames or anything like that," said Courtney. "I'm just trying to get through my day. It's hard enough to get through the day without it being brought up."

[...]

Linn County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden said in an email that he understands and appreciates the trauma that families of crime victims go through.

"Regarding the investigation into the death of Chris Bagley, there is little I can say by way of public comment except that the investigation and review of the matter is active and continuing at this time," said Vander Sanden in an email. "Unfortunately I am unable to give a definitive time-table concerning when a final decision will be made."

Cedar Rapids man connected to Chris Bagley charged with drug conspiracy
A man who faces up to 10 years on a firearms charge has been indicted on a charge of being a large-scale marijuana trafficker since 2010, supplying drugs to others, including Chris Bagley before he was killed in December.

Andrew Shaw, 31, of Cedar Rapids, is charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, according to the information filed last week in U.S. District Court. He is accused of conspiracy with others known and unknown to distributing 100 kilograms or more of marijuana from 2010 through March of this year.
