I don’t know that he wanted a war. I think it was plain and simple greed. He’s beyond selfish that he didn’t care about the fallout for those who report real hate crimes. He was focused solely on himself and his career - which will fittingly only suffer now.

I really think if he only wanted fame he could have gone about it in many other ways than inciting a race war. He could have faked a seizure in a public place, a near drowning....a fake baby mama demanding DNA testing....I mean, the possibilities are endless. Why go right to something so racist?

Because he is an activist, and this fit his agenda.

There were multiple benefits to doing this, as opposed to anything else.

Exactly.

And that’s the tactic that has been used to silence people who used common sense in reaching a conclusion that something wasn’t right here.

Disagree, and you are called all sorts of names.

It’s as wrong as it is petty.

If you have to resort to name calling, then you’ve lost the argument.
BBM Yes, your so right!

Because all but the noose would have been all too believable at this particular time in America. The noose is probably what did him in so quickly- his not taking it off was not normal and I’m guessing the cops were immediately suspicious.

Yeah, the noose was too unbelievable and not only was Law Enforcement suspicious, the public was also. People were even more suspicious when the kindergarten letter mailed came out that outlined the fake attack prior to it happening.

That remains to be seen. We would need to know a lot more about what exactly happened. In my experience, such behind the scenes dealings would be more of an ethical violation violating rules of professional responsibility and dealt with by the State Bar. Resulting in a public reprimand or even suspension. But I have very little confidence in that. State Bar functions are all very political in every state, and SA Foxx is well connected, so I don't expect much there. The Bar may say, "its being dealt with, but its all confidential." And nothing happens. If there is actual bribery or coercion, that could be investigated and prosecuted as corruption or various other charges, state or federal. But that kind of case is difficult to prove. The participants are smart enough to not actually pay money for the favor. But more likely its an understanding of "you do this big favor for me, and then when you need a favor, I'll return it." So its very difficult to show the quid pro quo. This "subtle corruption" is rampant.

I live less than 2 hours north of where it happened and I have not heard one person talk about it
Wow. I personally find that Very disturbing.
I'm kind of speechless. What does Chicago find worthy of discussion?
I am 100 percent curious.
Can you elaborate?

Sure. But I think it’s instructive to realize that most of the outrage seems to be on the internet, or seems to be for those of us who live in the state.

I imagine people did feel some outrage, shook their heads and moved on. For whatever reason, I’ve only seen one friend post about it on Facebook and haven’t heard mention of it anywhere in real life. Maybe it’s because nobody else’s lives were ruined by this particular hoax (as sometimes happens when innocent people are prosecuted). It seems he’s ruined his own career and wasted a lot of people’s time.
Well, people on the internet come from all different parts of the world. Its just a way to have their voices heard.
It's not that people's lives were not ruined, or even that their time was wasted that some are upset.
The consequences should be the same for all people, whether they have money or are famous. People have faced harsher punishment for less.
This is just one example, and I'm sure it won't be the last. Imo

No one here had ever heard of Smollett prior to the fiasco.
No one I heard talk about this Smollet hoax had ever watch the show even though it was filmed here.

No one except those two white, homophobic, racist fans of Empire who immediately recognized him and lo and behold had a noose and some bleach ready on a cold Chicago polar vertex night! :D

I'm not seeing the two attackers buying white face makeup. I can see them purchase the face masks used in the attack.

Ha! I saw an article on Facebook about that, and thought it was some sort of a joke.

Nope, his lawyer actually made that claim.

I’ve heard it all.

My niece is a young professional in Chicago - lives and works in the city. She heard of the case, but isn't following it at all. Certainly isn't outraged....just basically heard of it, thought it was weird, and moved on.

I'm from around there and I do not feel bad about this case, nor do I need pity and I don't feel that he has done anything to me.

This post just goes to show Case in point for many of us reading here, and that is why so many are speaking out. That Some do not see that there is a problem, is exactly what the problem is.

So... anybody taking bets on how long it will be before we see the contents of the "never supposed to be closed" case file, free and clear with little to no content restrictions?

Hate crimes are a big deal. They happen, and they are horrific.

They matter.

To fake one, causes untold damage. The biggest victims, are those who are victims of real hate crimes.

Their accounts are questioned, their credibility is discounted, and they are revictimized by a skeptical public.

If you care about hate crimes, then you should care about hoaxes.

That’s how I see it.

I'm sure everyone has noticed that they paid with one ($100?) bill. But did others notice that they did not scan a UPC for inventory control. She just checked the price and input the price? Strange retail practice in that store! Am I seeing that correctly?

ETA- this retail video has some of the best video quality I have seen!

Just a little comic relief...

While that’s certainly one way to look at it, many of us who are interested in social justice and preventing hate crimes see it entirely differently. Focusing a great deal of energy and anger on a single hoax won’t really do anything to prevent further hate crimes. Instead, it’s the abundance of real hate crimes we focus on, trying to find solutions to this very real problem. So really, I find it unfair and untrue to state that those who care about hate crimes must care a great deal about a single hoax. One hoax vs the many real instances - there’s no contest there.

I think the folks in Chicago who are not paying much mind to this and simply moving forward are pretty smart, as anger will only fuel the fire and cause more hatred.
