Kentucky - Judge killed, sheriff arrested in Letcher County courthouse shooting - Sep. 19, 2024 # 3

That is what I was trying to say. Thank you for pointing it out.
I'll make sure to check my punctuation before posting. I would never dream of taking away from an important subject by causing a distraction.
I didn’t put the punctuation comment as criticism in any way so I hope you didn’t take it that way. I put it just to kind of lighten things up a little. We all write things knowing what we are trying to say but sometimes they just don’t come out the way we meant them to be. I’m just as guilty as the next person.

I would assume if the potential defense is some sort of break with reality, that he would be hospitalized or at least undergo some testing. I wonder if he is under suicide watch. MOO MOO MOO

This is such an interesting point!

Are the sheriff's behaviors (shooting) and consequent statement referring to some type of kidnapping... (whether metaphorically or literally)...
concerning enough to have him be evaluated psychologically...

Would that be happening now?

And... would we know if the evaluation has been/is being administered?

JMO...

Thanks for the updates, @arielilane ... and everyone else !!
And so we wait.

I'm wondering if we'll be surprised at the motive ?
I.e., "WHAT ?? That was all ? Stines threw his life away for that ?"
Omo.

My fear is that a motive is never revealed...

Since motive is not required for conviction...
Is there a possibility we... the public... will never know?

For my selfish curiosity... I REALLY want to know!

JMO...

It will probably all get shaken out in court. I also think that if he were undergoing any kind of evaluation or treatment it would likely be known. I too am really curious but as we find out so often here, it’s a long wait.

I think; when/if the motive becomes known, there will be a much wider involvement of many others in whatever triggered the shooting. He was faced with something or set of circumstances that he thought the only way to counter them was to kill Mullins. Convoluted scenario, but truth is stranger that fiction. You know; Stines could die while trial pending, and all be moot.

Personally, I regret that Stines daughter became a subject if not part the investigation, and I think this fact will prevent both sides from ever disclosing the whole truth at trial. It could very well be that the minor is collateral damage for a bigger cause but as of this day, it seems to be working locally where I don't think support for Stines has wavered since the day of the shooting.

And should Stines pass while his trial pending, I see this becoming Kentucky folklore. Coming from UK, I don't know anything about KY but whether or not truth stranger than fiction, it will always be tragic and sad. JMO.

And "should Stines pass" before trial, all would quietly go away as far as the knowledge he gained which drove him to the action he felt compelled to take. Must be a strong incentive.

It wouldn't be the first time... IMO, follow the money. Just sayin...
So true. If you don't know the answer to a question, look for the money. It's often foolproof. JMO.

I do keep wondering about Stines' ruminations as he passes each day in custody. Does he waver at all, feeling doubt or regret when revisiting the moment he chose to kill Judge Mullins, or does he bask in relief and righteousness, certain he'll be exonerated? Does he feel safe now?

Such an inexplicable case.

Saw this while seeking to learn more about Whitesburg. Blurb indicates they were getting a treatment center there and occupying an old school building. To have 22 apartments. If locations are near known addicts, it seems there is a drug problem in the area.

Some people; when confronted with serious situations, review the facts and consider the options either available to them or obtainable. They decide on one as the solution and proceed to implement it. Sometimes it takes a while to sort thru and weed out the impossible, impractical, or ineffective.
But, when a decision is reached, action is taken. At that stage, they have no care for the subject, collateral damage, or their own future. They then "rationalize" the situation as a necessary act fully accomplished.
So there was a reason; started back in the time frame of the deputy's activities, and continued to stress Stines. Probably had nothing to do with that specifically, but he became aware of something.
He reviewed, considered, eliminated some, solidified others. He knew his county, the people in it and their history's/records. He reached conclusions. He must have voiced these to Mullins at some point as noted in the references during their lunch.
I think Sheriff Stines is occupied with helping his attorneys prepare for trial and gives little thought to his actual act. He believed it was necessary, he did it, now to work out the results. JMO..

I dont think article contains any "new details" but posting anyway because there is no new info out there right now.
Inquiring minds want to know... we need to fed our minds.. ;) .. energy is needed for the mind. moo

Two law enforcement sources have confirmed that former Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines did not select his daughter’s number from a pre-saved list on District Judge Kevin Mullins’s phone when he called her just prior to killing the judge.

Both say Stines dialed the number before he shot Mullins multiple times in the judge’s chambers behind the Letcher District Courtroom. Stines is charged with murder.

From same linked article above:

While many have interpreted that to mean the number was saved, two separate law enforcement officials with knowledge of what happened said that is not the case. One, who asked not to be identified, said a security video taken from a camera mounted behind Stines near the ceiling in the judge’s office shows Stines punched in the numbers to dial.

But if her number was saved under a different name it would not be easily found, however after he typed it in it would show what name it was saved under - just keying in the number doesn’t exclude the daughter’s number being stored already under her own name or a different name- moo

This doesn’t mean it wasn’t saved in the phone- dialing it doesn’t exclude the number being saved- just that he didn’t pick it from a list - which would make sense especially if it was saved under a different name or not obviously listed in recent call log- it’s just the fastest way for him to call the daughter - moo

So there is more video we have not seen...

My Theory- the Sherriff is having a mental health issue. He deluded that his family was in danger and that the judge was involved. He went into the office to confront the judge and when he couldn't reach his daughter from either phone he assumed she was in some kind of danger and took action.

There is no 17 year old girl ever born who would be sitting behind her father in court if the entire town had just found out he had just shot her middle aged-boyfriend.
