MN - Beau Shroyer, Wife of Detroit Lakes missionary killed in Angola arrested in connection to his death

So happy to hear the kids are safe and back on US soil. I feel Jackie’s Mom will ensure they receive everything necessary. Will they be able to communicate with Jackie I wonder? Regardless of the circumstances, they need to be able to talk to their Mom.
We don't actually know where Jackie's mum is, do we? It's possible that she stayed in Angola, to support her daughter.

It’s not been stated what family the children are currently with in the US. My comment was made in regards to her role as their guardian, though I don’t know if that’s legally true. That will be sorted out if it hasn’t been already.

What a difficult situation this has put both families in. Financially speaking, I’m happy to hear there is a fund for the kids.

In regards to Jackie’s Mom remaining in Angola. As a Mom with a daughter myself, I would want to be as close as I could under this set of circumstances. But unless I had outside financial help, that wouldn’t be possible for an extended period. I hope she is doing ok and has the resources/support she needs. The radiating ripples affect so many in cases like this.

Just reminding the Alphabet agencies of my unique set of skills…. And I don’t lean on things
ADOT0902 I got your reference immediately!!! For a moment I thought, We got Liam Neeson-type macho man!
The best speech ever given by a Father (former alphabet agency undercover ops) desperate to get his daughter back when she was kidnapped. Over 10 million people have watched this oft quoted exchange, it never gets old.
"....I don't have money, but I have a very particular set of skills..." "Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you."
PS... works for me. I love that guy...

In Australia, I get almost the exact same advice if I plan on travelling to the USA.. ( which, currently, I am not ) ...

From my Govt. site

Safety

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and protests are occurring due to the potential for unrest and violence. Monitor media for information, follow the instructions of local authorities and abide by any curfews.
  • Violent crime is more common in the United States than in Australia. Gun crime is also prevalent. If you live in the United States, learn and practice active shooter drills.
  • There is a persistent threat of mass casualty violence and terrorist attacks in the United States. Be alert, particularly in public places and at events.
  • Severe weather and natural hazards include earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, landslides, avalanches, hurricanes, tornadoes, winter storms, extreme temperatures, wildfires, and floods. Monitor weather conditions and follow the advice and instructions of local authorities, including evacuation orders.
TROOPER I was surprised by your post and did not realize other countries had such advisories about the US. Fascinating. Just looked up US gov travel advisory for Australia. And guess what? Your country has no warnings what-so-ever! Absolutely wonderful and will be booking my next vacay to the Land Downer Under. Hubby has had a fascination with Australia for his entire adult life.

Our wildlife deserves a warning all of its own.

Memorial service scheduled for Beau

From the pulpit, Beau speaking...

'Our mission is not like other missionaries do, we are not doctors, or pilots, or home builders, our ministry (!) is based on relationships, getting to people deeply, and intimately, using those relationships to delve deeply into their lives, and helping with their physical needs, and also their spiritual needs. and their spiritual darkness they live in !!!!! ( THEY live in?? like.. .... ) . '
Snipped for focus
I guess the assumption is you'd get to know people intensely and intimately and change them from there. But that's a really hard ask for your target folks! They might not be amenable to change in a mutually agreeable direction. You might have completely incompatible goals. They might dislike you intensely for some reason. And they might not be remotely interested in hanging out with you, including that they have subsistence chores to take care of.
And aggressively trying to change people almost always backfires spectacularly, because the implication is you are better than them. It's extremely disrespectful IMO. And in a foreign culture where you don't know values and norms? Yeah, no.

I didn't see evidence that the Shroyers found Angolans who were particularly friendly to them, except maybe the guard with the history of violent behavior. This was a big red flag right there.

While I'm thinking of it...Did Jackie even have friends back home? I haven't heard anyone stepping forward in support except for mom.

KNOX.... Yes it is great news. I have been holding my breath on this one for MANY reasons. And, I think this info and link from "advisory" will suffice as to why.

"Exercise increased caution in Angola due to crime and health. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Violent crime, such as armed robbery, assault, carjacking, and homicide, is common. Local police lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents."

Unfortunately, there's a lot of that in the US, too.

But, I also note that Angola is low-ish on the State Department's list of countries with tourist warnings. I posted ^^^^ a selection of countries that have the exact same level of warning. They include pretty much anywhere I'd want to travel to, including Germany.

Article talks about things printed that are untrue- Beau was never a pastor per his sister. The family is not being filled in and don’t know what to believe. There is a language barrier and there appears to be no consular assistance.
Family still working on getting Beau’s body repatriated. I’m a bit flabbergasted that SIM isn’t handling the red tape.
All just very sad.
IMHO

Yeah... not impressed with SIM at the moment but maybe there is more going on than we know about.

ITA that there's probably a LOT we don't know about, and may never.

“We don’t know who to turn to. There’s so many factors — a language barrier, a time difference, and just not knowing how their legal system works,” Roering said. “No one has been able to connect us to any resource to help get some clarity of answers.”

From that article.. none of these things are difficult. the time thing, you just get an old clock from Goodwill, wind it up and set it on Angola time, same time as Italy, as Norway, because longitude , 7 hours ahead, because Minnesota is getting to be last on the spectrum of the clock, latitude wise. ( Guam , and American Samoa is about the last American territory on the day clock )

Her brother has been there for three years, has she been ringing him at 3am in the morning all this time? surely not.

The language thing.. ask the Portuguese Consulate in Indiana, one state away. . they'll translate.

The Portuguese Legal System. Ditto. Ask the Consulate in Indianapolis, Indiana, or take a short trip over there, make an appointment. An Honorary Consul is better than a phone call to Angola..

There seems to be some sort of power struggle about the donated money, SIM says it is taking care of the childrens education etc, and is running a fund, also...

The linked story has been regurgitated with a new date several times now, nothing new in the last several renditions.

When or how will we know when charges are filed? Any thoughts?

It was hard to believe they were still stuck in the same situation..

I don't expect any news of charges, or court dates until the wet season is over.. it's nearly summer there, wet, hot, and heavy rains would be expected, things get disrupted. . a long detention is not unusual. Angola's law system, by comparison with, say, Ruanda/Burundi is well run..

Foreigners who commit crimes outside their national boundaries are always subject to delays that a natural citizen may not experience, because other laws and processes become entangled in the whole business. For example, the language barrier. Not quite sure how proficient Jackie is in Portuguese, most likely, to combat misunderstandings, a translator would have to be present at all times, this causes delays, sometimes monumental delays..

The charges against the actual killers, the two Angolan men, and Bernadino, publication of their charges might occur a bit faster, but not much faster.. Their trial will probably take place before Jackie's.

There really is an enforceable timeline that the Prosecutor must follow, .. it is set down in the framework of the legal registry, this would be explained to Jackie, she would be informed of what will occur..

Pre-trial detention is subject to strict timelines which can not be surpassed. These vary with the phase of the procedure and type of crime.

These are (counting from the day it was enforced):

(1)

(a) 4 months without an accusation brought forth;

(b) 8 months, the defendant asked for a judicial review of the accusation and one has not been produced;

(c) One year and two months without a sentence in the first instance;

(d) One year and six months without a definitive conviction;

(2) The deadlines above are augmented respectively to six months, ten months, one year and six months and two years in cases of terrorism, violent or highly organized criminality or when the procedure relates to crimes punishable by 8 years incarceration or more or crimes of:

( worth reading, because it gets longer and more intricate.... )

Angolan law follows these principles, all of their jurisprudence and penal code is based on Portuguese Law.

Or hear me out an iPhone, can do all those things. Mine has a fancy clock app that tells me what time it is everywhere (I use it frequently as I have clients in Arizona and they don’t switch clocks so I have no idea what time it is there, ever)… it also translates pretty well for free, fantastic with a paid app or translator for $19 an hour someone will translate for you, the legal system I don’t know Google it.
The have an entire missionary group is not one person in Angola volunteering to help. This makes no sense so I don’t believe it.

I have no doubt JS will be treated fairly and there are "eyes" and "boots on the ground" that have nothing to do with religion. The US presence: strategic/political/geographic/energy security !!! (Of course in my opinion..wink)
" Angola is a strategic partner and regional leader, and the U.S.-Angola partnership is critical to advancing our shared goals of economic prosperity, regional security, and increasing energy security in Africa and the Atlantic."
and....
"U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin became the first-ever U.S. Secretary of Defense to visit Angola in September 2023, engaging on military modernization and regional security."
I see 3 possible scenarios: Defense #1) Bernadino blaming JS as the mastermind....and looking for a plea bargain for cooperation. (?)
Defense #2) The hired accomplices blaming Bernadino as the mastermind....and looking for a plea bargain for cooperation. (?)
Defense #3) JS being the object of Bernadino's desire (and most easily manipulated) to take control of the household...
she is totally shocked and had no idea. (?)
Additional scenarios welcomed, sleuths????
This is so darned tragic...the Father of five children slaughtered in a foreign country. The only thing we know for sure is the constant refrain of "money for murder." As a female/wife/mother....I just couldn't see myself falling for a guy 20 years younger than myself and plotting a crime. (Olivier Martinez, might turn my head for a few minutes, though ...) JS doesn't strike me as an over-amorous female being the object of Bernadno's unrequieted desire. I think that is just Bernadino's "story" and he is sticking to it. If Beau S. was getting concerned and planned to return permanently to the US, Bernadino would have a lot to lose. I'm getting more of "street guy"( who sees himself as the alpha male) looking for a money source and wanting to take over Beau's household.

There seems to be some confusion out there, spread around by SM with no foundation.

I just want to be clear that Angola, like almost every country in the world, has a diplomatic mission in the US. You want to know what's happening in Angola? They're your source. It's what they're tasked to do.

Here is contact info for the Embassy of Angola to the US. Note, Angola also has consulates in Houston, NYC, and Toronto. I'm sure any of those would be happy to help what's left of the Shroyer family with info and direction. And yes, embassy and consular personnel speak English: it's their job.

Do we know if Angola even does plea bargains?

IMO the Angolan official source wouldn't have come out with "Jackie is the mastermind" unless it was true. It would be a whole lot easier on Angola if the mastermind was a local.
So, yep, IMO we can get used to the idea that Jackie was the mastermind.

The person who could dispute whatever defense the defendants come up with is dead. The kids may have information valuable to the investigation. This will likely end up being a "she said, he said" scenerio, where they all point the finger at another.

Is there evidence? Bank, cell phone, witnesses outside of the family? Did Jackie contact Bernadino while they were in the States for four months this summer? What about the money they raised while in the US. Is any missing, didn't travel back to Lubango? Did anyone notice anything peculiar when they were home?

Curious if the investigation will also include working with LE back in the US? If there really is no evidence that this was anything but Bernadino's idea/storyline. Would Jackie have been arrested? I waiver on whether or not local authorities could be corrupt or inept. Whatever the case, Beau and his family deserve the truth and earthly justice.
