i thought the big gap sounded a lot like twin to twin transfusion...
As I recall, twin to twin transfusion occurs in twins which share one placenta, not in fraternal twin pregnancies such as Nancy's.
I have a feeling that Nancy had some degree of placental insufficiency with Lucy, common with multiples ( and singles) in an older first time mom. Also, I've thought that it was a blessing that the boy was larger, since, as the previous poster said, preemie boys usually have less mature lungs than girls of the same gestational age.
