More from the Pima SD:

Investigation: Many of you observed an active law enforcement presence at the Guthrie residences over the weekend. That activity will continue tonight and into tomorrow as part of the ongoing investigative process, including the expansion of the search and follow-up on new leads.

This is all part of the investigative process, as the search for Nancy expands and new leads come in. To preserve the integrity of this criminal investigation, details of that process are not being released at this time.

Ransom: The FBI is handling all aspects related to any ransom note(s) or communications involving the Guthrie family. Any inquiries regarding this matter should be directed to the FBI Public Affairs Office.

Tips: We appreciate the media’s assistance in helping get information to the public. Thousands of calls have been received across multiple tip lines, and investigators continue to review them.

Anyone who believes they have information that may assist investigators is asked to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI, the PCSD non-emergency line at 520-351-4900 or 88-CRIME. Video or pictures can also be uploaded via the QR code attached.

It's one thing to be the police and investigate all possibilities. Its another thing to make accusations publicly. If the SIL is innocent, how much additional pain have you and others caused the Guthrie family? We should all ask if we want to be a positive force or a negative one, that makes others' life a little harder.
I don't see it as making accusations. But you do realize in a lot of these cases we sleuth it DOES actually turn out to be a family member?

I wouldn't say there isn't anything to suggest family. It has been said, even on this forum, that random kidnappings are extremely rare. They often involve people close - and since NG wouldnt have business associates, a scorned lover, and any other non-familial person that makes sense - to look at family or in-laws is reasonable.
And one could have reasonably expected
SG - who is no doubt aware her sister is a suspect by many in the public
to have put the kibosh on that suggestion days ago

Also in this segment, Brian Entin says he talked to someone who saw the first note and the ransom amount for the first deadline was 4 million, then if not paid on Friday, went up to 6 million for today's deadline.

He also says the note showed that "the location of the Apple Watch inside Nancy's room was very very specific."

Megyn had a good point that those "proofs" of being the real culprit (along with the smashed back flood light) were sort of weak. That if you really had the kidnapped victim and you were after all this money, wouldn't you make Nancy tell you something very specific, then share that in the ransom as your big, "aha! I'm the one who has her!"

I agree with her, but also that makes me think (if the notes are real), that Nancy was no longer alive, so all the culprit has to go on is to convey something from the crime scene.

The segment is pretty good. You can search the transcript to find the parts I mentioned, but the whole segment has relevant insights imo.

ETA: regarding the church talk, I see there has been an update since this aired that the Daily Mail now says that Nancy had been due to watch the online church service with a group of friends.

Presumably it was just a dumb camera (Nest) with no ability to record on the actual device. We also know from the doorbell situation that NG did not have a Nest subscription that is required to record the video to the cloud. Essentially meaning those cameras would have only been functioning as live feed cameras, if they were functioning at all.

Megyn Kelly is reading from the paywalled Daily Mail article in the clip below, and she mentions this, from the article: NG was due to meet a group of friends to watch the church service online together. She says that the alarm was raised when NG didn’t join them. It’s not clear to me whether this was an online gathering or not but it helps explain the part that some people have been questioning, if true.

I’m glad her friend raised concerns, if they didn’t, it might have been another day before she was discovered missing.

1. Family was last one to see her before she went missing.
2. Family was the one to notice she was missing from home and called 911 from there. (That means they had access to getting inside.)
3. Family's car was towed by LE.
4. Days later family's home was searched and photographed late at night by LE.
To our knowledge, no other homes or cars were searched (besides Nancy's).
Discussing family's involvement does not seem unreasonable.
100% this.

Whats the point of being a discussion forum for ongoing cases if you cant discuss 99% of what has been going on in it?

Honestly? Suspected them the moment I learned she has been at AGES house right before SIL dropped her home. It's always the last person to see them alive you need to look extra long and hard at.
OK, perfect. This is what I want to hear. Honest answers.

With all due respect...if it isnt a kidnaping, where the hell is she? A kidnaping is the unlawful taking or confinement of a person. They havent found her in the house or in the neighborhood. Unless they think she wandered off....I just don't understand why people still think she wasnt kidnapped?

I fear this case has been botched from the get go.

The State Police should have been brought in IMMEDIATELY to help with this case. This tiny agency is not equipped.

Both Nancy’s AND Annie’s properties should have been sealed off as crime scenes. NO MATTER WHAT. Those were the last supposed places Nancy was seen alive. All vehicles should have been seized.

Then ALL the family members should have been dragged down to the police station and DRILLED. Questioned. Proved their timeline by providing corroborating evidence. Taken polygraphs, etc.

All electronic devices should have been seized.

All vehicles should have been seized.

And should have been done for purposes of elimination. Eliminate the family first. Then work out.

This is LE 101

These “statements” about driving Nancy home, at what time, by whom, and what exactly happened at the drop off don’t make any sense. Was it just the SIL? Was it Annie & the SIL? How does an 85yo woman with SERIOUS physical limitations get into her garage in 2 minutes? There should be history on that remote opener to show the average time it takes her. 2 minutes just seems way too short.

Crime scene experts should have gone over BOTH properties with a fine toothed comb. As well as all vehicles. These were places that Nancy was confirmed to be.

That first critical 48hr window has been lost here because of sloppy police work. And the delay of reporting Nancy’s disappearance.

We are now into the 2nd week and they are just now checking Annie’s house with Luminol. After the family has continued living there? And possibly doing a clean up??

They just discovered there was a camera on the roof of Nancy’s house. What else did they miss?

We have a supposed ransom demand that has not been confirmed legitimate.

My questions are these:

1. Why haven’t the family members been eliminated as suspects?

2. Why can’t they confirm the legitimacy of this ransom demand?

3. Why do they keep going back and doing basic things that should have been done on day 1 or day 2?

4. And WHY would the Sheriff go to a basketball game with a case like this going on so early in an investigation? Normally a case is worked by all involved without sleep for days. They’re not going to events. This is a very bad look.

This is heading for a catastrophic conclusion. In more ways than one.
100% Yes on everything.

I was stunned to see the Sheriff in the crowd when they showed the basketball game bleachers emptying out. I would not be able to concentrate on one minute of that game, knowing the current situation.

Sometimes perps return to the crime scene pretending to observe or pay respects. They like to connect to the investigation. Same with the victim's funeral.
Ugh yes. Brendt Christensen. He attended the vigil for Yingying Zhang after he killed her.

I definitely believe that the church report is nonsense.

And actually significant since LE initially reported that a family member told LE that they went to check on NG at her house because a person called them from NG's church to let them know she wasn't there. But, LE interviewed the pastor who reported that NG hasn't been to the church services in-person since before COVID.

This was initially on the LE Timeline and it's been since dropped from the timeline. Likely LE hasn't discussed this since the first presser since there are some concerning problems in this story if the family actually told them that somebody from the church called them to report Nancy wasn't in church.

My thought is LE isn't discussing this because it's important in the investigation and they want to further investigate the involved parties without stating that they are persons of interest.

I agree. The call coming from a member of the church doesn’t really make sense at all because they would know she doesn’t attend physical services. What if the call was actually from the people that have her? Maybe they called the family and said we have your mom.

I just got a chance to watch Savannah's newest video (the one of her alone from today, 2/9)

I agree that it seems to be a departure in tone and oddly vague. She asks people to call police if they see anything strange or unusual, even if they live far away from Tucson.

In that case, shouldn't LE provide at least some additional information in terms of what we should be looking for? There wasn't even a contact number or a tip line included in the post. So LE is asking anyone anywhere to report anything weird any way they see fit?

I assume the FBI and ICAC had their hands in this video - why are they having SG release a video that asks for general prayers and tips? Do they really not have anything? And if they truly have nothing and they're hoping for usable tips, why have SG release such a vague plea?

I hope the family can rely on LE to get this done. I hope they have way more than it seems, but every day that passes without visible progress makes me more concerned.

Also, if SG and her siblings have to release these heart wrenching videos, shouldn't LE be doing their part via press conferences etc. to clear up misinformation?

And while I'm at it - LE knows that TC and AG are facing intense public scrutiny. If they've been cleared, which IMO LE should know by now, why not say that clearly and boldly? Similar to SG's statement - why are they casting such a large net in terms of who's cleared (nobody)?

I so hope that the FBI knows what they're doing and they're many steps ahead of the criminals. Unfortunately, I'm hopeful but not confident.

About 20 minutes til the deadline.

Here’s the latest from Sheriff Nanos:“We do not have any additional information to release publicly this afternoon. The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active and ongoing.

We understand the significant public interest in this case; however, investigators need time and space to do their work. If and when relevant information becomes available, it will be shared.”

In other words, we might update you sometime...or not.
Thanks, Sheriff. Sorry to bother you. We wouldn't want you to miss any basketball games.

This feels like a hoax. Adult kidnappings are rare for the most part. When is the last time we heard about an adult or child being kidnapped for ransom?

Here are two I can recall and Wikipedia link:
Patty Hearst
Lindbergh baby

JP Getty III, Jaycee Dugard...

Answer: it's been a very long while. Most are children. I keep thinking, why take an 80+ grandmother? I suppose it's unlikely that she would try to escape, but there's a possibility that she could die of a heart attack, simply from the stress. She's such an odd victim. Was it a crime of opportunity, or was someone holding a grudge against her or a family member?

Right now, the deadline approaches. And I, like many here I think, believe that NG is no longer alive. I hope I'm wrong but fear that she hasn't been alive for quite some time.

So we are sad, and feel sorry for the family. And maybe angry at this baffling, frustrating, and very sad case. So maybe that's why people here are calling out others who they feel are breaking the rules.

WS says posters should show respect for victims and their families. But what if some posters believe that family members are perpetrators? This is an awkward situation. It isn't the first time this has happened.

Personally, I'm not inclined to suspect the family members. I certainly don't want to suspect them. But in a previous case, I did suspect a family member of a victim. In different cases each of us may be in the position of suspecting or defending a victim's family member.

I think the best we can do is follow the rules and be careful what we say, both about the families of victims and to/about each other.

I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even if we disagree, we should be respectful. Just because someone thinks a family member is or isn’t involved, let them share their thoughts. Yes, I’ve said I think family is involved and I right now I still do. If it turns out I’m wrong, I’ll admit it.
Yes...I agree. Opposing opinions have value too. If we all agreed, what would we all talk about....how smart we all are? I've thought from day 1 that someone in the family was involved. That doesn't mean I can't see innocent reasons for LE to search AG's house.

  • #15,479
So was FBI only brought in to handle the ransom part of the investigation?

I really wish they were point, I hate to say i don’t have confidence in local LE…. but well ummm

No, FBI are taking an active part in all aspects of investigations, a lot behind the scenes in digital - devices etc.
